What is an Emerging Health Leader?

EMERGING: an individual in the first 15 years of their health career or newly moving towards to a
leadership role

HEALTH: an individual who is committed to promoting health and wellness, managing illness,
preventing disease, across the lifespan or otherwise influencing the determinants of health

LEADER: an individual who takes initiative to empower themselves and others to influence positive
change

CHAIR

The Chair position will join the Emerging Health Leaders Nova Scotia Executive in fulfilling the Vision,
Mission, Mandate and Strategic Directions of EHL Canada and EHL Nova Scotia.

Qualifications
● Strong organizational skills and problem solving abilities.
● Self-motivated and able to work independently, respecting timelines.
● Prior experience with committee participation, chairing meetings and facilitating discussions.
● Good facilitation and project management skills.

Position Description
● Official representative for EHL Nova Scotia.
● Schedule and facilitate regularly meetings with the Executive and Advisory Committee
● Works with Vice Chair to prepare and disseminate agendas/minutes for meetings to the
Executive at least 48 hours prior to and following the meeting.
● Act as a liaison between EHL Nova Scotia and EHL Canada, including attending monthly EHL
Canada telephone meetings.
● Monitor and ensure accountability that all EHL events and initiatives align with Mission, Vision
and annual strategic plans.
● Support the executive in preparation of an annual report for Executive & Advisory Council
● Lead the annual strategic planning process for EHL Nova Scotia.
● Facilitates and mediate Executive decision making with respect to organizational priorities
and governance concerns.
● Ensure and support appropriate engagement with the Advisory Council.
● Ensure appropriate succession planning for the executive and advisory council (process for
recruitment, retention and termination of positions).
● Monitor finances, and has co-signing authority in regards to EHL Nova Scotia cheques.
● Co-signs sponsorship and partnership agreements with sponsors.

Commitment
● The Chair position is a 2 year commitment and hours per month varies depending on local
EHL Nova Scotia events, EHL National calls etc. (approx. 15 hrs per month)

VICE CHAIR

The Vice Chair will join the Emerging Health Leaders Nova Scotia Executive in fulfilling the Vision,
Mission, Mandate and Strategic Directions of EHL Canada and EHL Nova Scotia.

Qualifications
● Strong organizational skills and problem solving abilities.
● Self-motivated and able to work independently, respecting timelines.
● Prior experience with committee participation, chairing meetings and facilitating discussions.
● Good facilitation and project management skills.

Position Description
● Official representative for EHL Nova Scotia.
● Leads EHL Nova Scotia meetings when Chair unavailable.
● Schedule regularly occurring meetings with the Executive and Advisory Committee in
coordination with the Chair.
● Attends monthly EHL Canada meetings in place of Chair when required.
● Represent the majority decision of EHL Nova Scotia when acting on its behalf.
● Monitor and keep knowledgeable of all EHL Nova Scotia’s activities.
● Discuss matters of concern with the Executive.
● Lead the Executive in strategic planning for EHL Nova Scotia in coordination with the Chair
● Help guide and mediate Executive actions with respect to organizational priorities and
governance concerns.
● Encourage accountability to the Advisory Council.
● Support the executive members in working towards the goals of EHL.
● Assists with the following (but not limited to): Newsletters, Annual Performance Reports,
finances (has co-signing authority) and sponsorship agreements.
● Assists other executive members with committee work.

Commitment
● The Vice Chair is a 2 year commitment and hours per month varies depending on local EHL
Nova Scotia events, EHL National calls etc. (Approx. 10 hours per month)
