MARGARET “MAGGIE”
OHARA
Alfred, N.Y. — Margaret “Mag-
gie” Ohara of Alfred, died on Sat-
urday (Aug. 14, 2010) while
recovering from heart surgery at
Rochester General Hospital. She
was born on April 14, 1928,
reared and educated in Hawaii. As
a young girl, she performed as an
aerial and acrobatic artist at civic
organizations and a popular circus
in Hawaii as well as the USO dur-
ing World War II. An accom-
plished swimmer and diver, she
held a Swimming National Cham-
pionship which qualified her for
the Olympic Games. A major dis-
appointment was the cancellation
of the games because of the war.
Maggie was a certified civil service
employer with positions at Pearl
Harbor, Hawaii; Veterans Admin-
istration, Internal Revenue Service,
Army Signal Corp — all in
Philadelphia; and Fort Jackson,
S.C. Her last employer was Alfred
University, where she worked in
the business office. But her main
contribution is the AU Women's
Swim Team, which she founded
and coached successfully.
The lasting images of Maggie are
a graceful dancer and a gracious
hostess. She loved dancing, espe-
cially the fox trot, rumba, waltz,
jitterbug — the old dances which
she felt required precision and
grace. She also loved to entertain
family and friends, and this was
expressed primarily through her
dinners, simple and sumptuous.
Cooking was almost a passion,
and her favorite Asian-Hawaiian
dishes were best realized at her
annual Chinese New Year buffet
supper. Many called her "the per-
fect hostess" or "the best cook."
Whatever, she was dearly loved by
many, and that includes her sur-
viving family: her husband of 58
years, Dr. David M. Ohara, Emeri-
tus Professor of English and Film
at AU; daughter, Stacey Kiyo
Ohara of Los Angeles, Calif.; son,
Darren and his wife Deb; grand-
son, Justin; and great-grand-
daughters, Mackenzie and Jaden.
According to Maggie's wishes,
there will be neither a viewing nor
a memorial service. Instead of
flowers, please donate to the Al-
fred Ambulance Company or the
charity of your choice.

BLANCHE M. SAWYER
WELLSBORO, Pa. — Blanche M.
Sawyer, 77, of 8 Purple St., passed
away Sunday (Aug. 22, 2010) at
the home of her daughter in
Wellsboro.
Born in Hartsville, March 12,
1933, the daughter of Walter D.
and Mildred Rowe Amidon, she
had resided her early life in
Hartsville and graduated from
Canisteo Central School, Class of
1951. She later moved to Austin-
burg, Pa., later living in Woodhull
from 1964 until 1995. Blanche
was active in the grange for sev-
eral years.
She was predeceased by her par-
ents; her son, Walter Sawyer in
1956; her husband, Donald K.
Sawyer in 1995; as well as two
sisters, Beverly Amidon and
Norma Robinson; and her broth-
ers, Ward and Stanley Amidon.
She is survived by five daughters,
Penny (Larry) Kahle of Eldred, Pa.,
Donna (John) Stevens of Middle-
bury Center, Pa., Bonny (Dave)
Wright of Wellsboro, Carol (Russ)
Redell Jr. of Wellsboro, and JoAnn
(Joe) Osgood of Wellsboro; two
sons, Donald (Dawn) Sawyer of
Chesnee, S.C., and David (Janine)
Sawyer of Wellsboro; 17 grand-
children, Chris Claycomb,
Michelle Sawyer, Michael Sawyer,
Megan Sawyer, Morgan Sawyer,
Eric Warriner, Corey Stevens,

Arkport, N.Y. — Victor E. Stuck,
87, formerly of the Arkport-
Canaseraga area, passed away
Thursday (August 19, 2010) at
Jones Memorial Hospital in
Wellsville.
Born in The Town Of Ward, Feb-
ruary 17, 1923, the son of Sher-
man and Edith Turybury Stuck, he
had resided his early life in Alfred
later residing in the Attica-Batavia
areas for several years. While
there, he was employed as a truck
driver for Agway. Victor has
served his country as a member of
the United States Army during
WW-2.
He was predeceased by his wife-
Lucy Burdick Stuck in 1994, his sis-
ter. Bernice Dick and his brother
Evert Stuck.
He is survived by his sister, Beatrice
Palmiter of Wellsville as well as
several nieces and nephews.

den, 75, of 6854 Upper Glen
Ave., passed away Monday (Aug.
23, 2010) at Strong Memorial
Hospital.
Born in Walterboro, S.C., June 21,
1935, the son of Samuel and
Francena Williams Gadsden, he
had resided in Hornell since 1959.
Harold retired from Local Union
435 of Rochester, as a construc-
tion worker. He was an avid fish-
erman, stock car racing, loved
watching wrestling on TV, and
loved to take country rides with
his family.
He was predeceased by his par-
ents, a daughter, Lorie Ann Gads-
den, and a son, James Gadsden.
He is survived by his wife, Minnie
Pearl Sheppard Gadsden of Hor-
