( All quantities are approximate )
Transport Sector Present Scenario

One of the largest in the world

Serves a land mass of 3.3 million km2 and population
of over one billion
Enormous growth of transport sector in the last 50
years
Volume of railway freight increased five folds and
passenger kms seven folds
Length of surfaced roads increased nine folds
Tonnage handled by India's major/minor ports increased
sixteen folds
Air freight tonnage increased 30 folds

MANIFOLD GROWTH OF FREIGHT TRAFFIC BUTTER & BREAD OF IR

AN INCREASE OF 400.3 MT
OVER 50 YEARS
Areas Of Concern

Falling market share (90% to 30%)

Capacity constraints on high density network.
Differential speeds of trains .
Inadequate Ports / Mines connectivity .
Inability to carry longer/heavier trains .
Lower throughput / longer turn-around
Scope For Improvement

Only following possibilities :--

Upgrading the existing network

Creation of a new passenger corridor
Creation of a new dedicated freight
corridor
Objectives Of The Project

Increase rail share Create additional rail

in freight market infrastructure to cater to
high levels of transport
demand
IT packaging of
Freight Services Reduce unit cost
of transportation
OBJECTIVES resulting in market
Create rail competitive rail
connectivity to bulk tariff for customer
customers not using

Operating Aspects of DFCC

DFCC to manage train operation on DFC.

DFCC to have own stations and control centers.

Rolling stock ownership & its maintenance by IR.

Feeder Routes /Sidings to be upgraded by IR .

All LCs to be replaced by ROBs / RUBs.

Executional Challenges

Land acquisition and R&R

Environmental and Forest clearances

Construction of DFC in close proximity to IR

Shifting of utilities owned by Public & Pvt bodies

New Contracting Policy and Implications .

Progress on Land Acquisition

Land Acquisition is being done as per Railway Amendment

Act, 2008. Compensation is guided by the Principles
enshrined in National Rehabilitation and Re-settlement
Policy (NRRP), 2007
Land Acquisition is required for 10667 hectares.
More than 90% of land acquisition completed
( Except Sonnagar-Dankuni)
Entire DFC land acquisition is likely to be completed by
2013.
Major Breakthrough in Statutory
Clearances

Wild Life clearances obtained under NWPA 1972 for

Sanjay Gandhi National Park
Balaji Ambaji Wild Life Sanctuary
Thol Bird Sanctuary

Diversion of forest lands in many states incl.

Maharashtra obtained under FCA 1980 .

Permission of Empowered Committee obtained for

cutting trees in Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) .

Permission of ASI obtained for negotiating many

heritage structures .
Future Corridors

Future Corridors:-

East West Corridor (KolkataMumbai) 2000 Kms.

North-South Corridor (Delhi-Chennai) 2173 Kms.
East Coast Corridor (Kharagpur-Vijayawada) 1100 Kms.
Southern Corridor (Chennai-Goa) 890 Kms.

DFCCIL has assigned this study to RITES to be completed by Dec

2014.
OPPORTUNITIES
Great opportunity for construction (equipment &
machinery) and manufacturing industry.
Opportunities in public private partnership (PPP) in
construction.
Developing more economic zones on the pattern of
DMICDC.
High capacity Rolling stock for DFC.
Setting up of logistic parks.
Freight Business.

NRS Launching System

SALIENT FEATURES OF LAUNCHER

This is mechanised girder launching system.

It has total four supports.
First & fourth are auxiliary supports. These are required during
self launching.
Second & third are front & rear supports. These are required
during launching of box girder.
First operation involves self launching of NRS Launching beam.
Second operation involves launching of box girder.
After self launching, front & rear supports are tightened with a
force of 10 t using Macalloy bars on the abutment & pier to
remove slackness.
NRS Launching System

SALIENT FEATURES OF LAUNCHER

Launch girder up to 22 m span.
Can launch girders weighing up to 230 t.
Capable of launching the girder longitudinally and
then moving it transversely.
Self weight 200 t.
