INSTRUMENTATION AND MONITORING

Construction of an Embankment Between Ch 59+500 ~ 61+200

1 INTRODUCTION

Construction of an embankment and installation of wick drain between Ch.59 +500 to Ch 61 +

080 area of the Southern Section of Southern Transport Development Project (STDP) had
been carried out by the Contractor Kumagai Gumi Co., in 2005 for the 2-lane scheme.
Installation and monitoring of the instrumentation devices along the above trace was
undertake by Geotechnical engineering Division of National Building Research
Organisation(NBRO) at the request of Kumagai Gumi Com.Ltd and has been completed in
Feb, 2007.

Now it is intend to raise the existing embankment and install additional wick drains at above
project area. Hence China National Technical Import & Export Corporation (CNTIC) request
NBRO to provide a proposal for supply, installation and monitoring of additional
instrumentation along STDP from Ch 59+500 to 61+050 by letter Ref No. STDP.SS/CNTIC-
QT/1499 dated 18th May 2012.

2 OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE OF THE WORK

The objective and scope of the work is as follow;

a. Supply and installation of following monitoring devices for selected embankment

sections between Ch 59+500 and 61+050.

Settlement plates
Standpipes Piezometers
Settlement Blocks
Toe stakes
b. Monitoring of instruments

c. Compilation, processing and presentation of instrumentation data on a

daily/weekly/fortnight as per monitoring program given in Section 5 basis as directed by
the Engineer, in formats approved by same.

3 INSTRUMENTATION

The number and type of instruments to be installed is summarized in Table 1 and is based on
the information provided in a letter from RDC dated 22nd May 2012.

The proposed instrumentation sections provided by the client are shown in Figures 1.1 to 1.7
in Appendix I.

3.1 Settlement Plates

Surface settlement plates shall be provided to monitor the settlement behaviour of the
compressible soils under the embankment during the construction and after preload. To
prevent interference from embankment placing operations, protective covers using un-
reinforced hume pipe manhole rings will be placed in settlement plates to act as a
protective sleeve during and after the filling operation. A details of the settlement plate is
giving in Figure 2 in Appendix I.

3.2 Installation procedure for Open standpipe Piezometers

The Open standpipe type piezometers will be installed at the selected road section. The
typical section of the piezometer is given in the Figure 3 in Appendix I.

3.2.1 Specification for Standpipe

The standpipe shall be a 32mm diameter rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tube. The
each base of the standpipe shall be plugged to the piezometer tip.

2|Page
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING DIVISION

NATIONAL BUILDING RESEARCH ORGANISATION

3.2.2 Specification for Filter

The filter shall be 7mm ~ 10mm in diameter gravel for 1.0m height of the filter
medium.

Note: Other relevant details are given in the detail drawing of piezometer.

3.2.3 Specification for Piezometer Tip

The piezometer tip is 500mm length 50mm diameter PVC tube perforated with
holes not greater than 5mm in diameter at intervals of approximately 15 ~ 20mm.
The perforated tube shall be wrapped in a geotextile. The geotextile shall be non
woven, effective opening size (O90) 0.1mm, Apparent opening size (O95) 0.25mm
and permittivity 2.7s-1.

The tip shall consist of following materials

i. Perforated 50mm diameter PVC tube wrap with geotextile

ii. PVC Bottom end cap
iii. PVC Reducing socket for 50mm tube to 32mm diameter PVC tube

Note: Other relevant details are given in the detail drawing of piezometer.

Installation procedure of a piezometer is described in Section 5 under method of

installation. The reading of the open standpipe is normally taken using the electric
dip meter.

3.3 Settlement Blocks

Settlement blocks shall be installed to supplement the settlement plates for long term
monitoring of post construction settlements. Details of the settlement blocks are given in
Figure 4 in Appendix I.

3.4 Toe Stakes

Toe stakes shall be installed perpendicular to the embankment slope at the beginning of the
placement of fill using simple means for observation of horizontal and vertical movements
of the ground due to shear deformation from the fill. This gives early warning of an
impending failure, even if monitored visually. The rate of movement is likely to be related
to the change in pore water pressure under the embankment. Details of a toe stake is given
in Figure 5 in Appendix I.

4 METHOD OF INSTALLATION

NBRO will provide the surveyor to determine the locations of monitoring devices and conduct
regular scheduled level surveys for, settlement plates, toe stakes and settlement blocks.

4.1 Settlement Plates

Settlement plates shall be installed at the existing ground surface as shown in Figure 2 in
Appendix I.

4.2 Piezometers

4.2.1 Installation procedure for open standpipe Casagrande type piezometers

Open standpipe Piezometers will be installed in borehole as shown in Figure 3 in

Appendix I. The installation procedure is given below.

i. A drill hole of 75mm (NX size) diameter will be advanced to a depth at least
0.4m deeper than the target base level of the piezometer using drilling machine.
ii. The drilled hole shall be flushed until return water clear. The water from the
borehole shall be pumped out prior to installation of piezometer.
iii. Piezometer shall be centred in the borehole at the depth nominated.
iv. The borehole shall be backfilled with bentonite approved by the Engineer to the
base of the filter.
v. The gravel filter shall be placed in the borehole up to the level of the proposed
base of piezometer tip. The elevation of the top of the filter shall be recorded.
vi. The standpipe shall be lowered carefully down the borehole to the top of the
filter, and the hole back filled with filter gravel over a 0.70m length or as
recommended by the Engineer.
vii. The top of the PVC tube shall be covered by a suitable protection method as per
the detail drawing of the piezometer.
viii. A small hole shall be made on the side of the standpipe tube near the top to allow
air to escape.

The pipe shall be sealed into the ground with a 0.1m deep layer of cement grout or
bentonite/Cement grout, so that it does not rotate and to prevent ingress of surface water
(details given in the detail drawing of piezometer in Figure 3 in Appendix I).

4|Page
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING DIVISION

NATIONAL BUILDING RESEARCH ORGANISATION

4.3 Settlement Blocks

Cast in-situ concrete blocks will be installed at the sides of shoulders of the completed
road.

4.4 Toe Stakes

Toe stakes comprise 3m long 1-inch diameter GI pipes filled with cement grout shall be
installed 3m from the toe of each berm at each embankment section. The stakes would be
pushed 2m into the ground. A concrete block of size 500mm x 500mm x 200mm would be
cast insitu to surround the pipe at ground level (see Figure 5 in Appendix I).

5 MONITORING PROGRAM

The time program for monitoring work during filling and after the installation of all
instruments is indicated in Table 2.

Surveyor will conduct the level surveying of settlement plates, toe stakes and settlement
blocks. All levels will be taken with reference to MSL m. The depth of water table would be
measured from the Open Standpipe Casagrande type Piezometer using an electric dip-meter.
