RFTH #2

Racial Inequality is unfair treatment of people that results in unequal access to valued

resources, services, and positions in society. It is when two people are exactly the same in every

way except for race and they are denied access to the resources because of their race. Racial

inequality has always consistently been an issue in this world, and people should have to go

through this. If you have not experienced this before, then you must know that this is one of the

most disrespectful, condescending, demoralizing feelings that can be felt. The two recent

incidents that will be discussed in the RFTH includes racial inequality a University on one of its

Asian professors, and the second from a nightclub in the UK on a group of black men,

At the University of Illinois at Chicago a Korean Professor told officials he was

systematically harassed because of his ethnicity and forced him to teach a math class because he

was Asian. Seung-Whan Choi, a professor of international relations, says that UICs political

science department denied him fair raises, treated him unfairly and forced him to teach classes

that he wasnt qualified to teach, according to a lawsuit filed last week and obtained by The

Huffington Post. Choi, who was a retired Army officer, told the Chicago Tribune that they dont

like Korean Americans at the school, and that the department head who is a White American

male expects him to be submissive. The lawsuit that was filed claimed that the department head

pressured Choi and told him that Asians, especially Koreans, are very good at math. Similarly,
Choi claims that the department pressured him into teaching a class in Korean politics, even

though he has had no formal training in that field of study. Thats not the end of it either.

Another incident that was reported was when the head of the political science department

changed one of Chois students grade without telling him and then told him that as a foreigner,

he has to keep in mind who he is dealing with and what he is wishing for and that Koreans are

stubborn and do not understand American culture of compromise. The lawsuit says that Chois

colleagues resented him and retaliated by isolating Choi from the rest of the department and

treating him unfairly. They denied his academic contributions even though it was clearly shown

on record that he authored two books in 2016 and has 35 published scholarly articles. The

harassment has humiliated Choi, causing him physical illnesses, severe anxiety, depression and

high blood pressure, the lawsuit claims. He told the Chicago Tribune that sometimes he doesnt

even want to go to work because of the dirty politics and unfair treatment within the department

Recently there were some racial issues that took place involving one of the NFL players,

who took a recent off-season trip to London. Mark Ingram, who plays for the New Orleans

Saints, said on Twitter that he and five of his friends, all of whom are black, had dinner at an

upscale restaurant Monday night before heading to the nightclub Cirque le Soir, where Ingram

said he had reservations. He and friends thought that they were going to the club to enjoy

themselves and have a good time, but instead they were told they were 6 big guys and too

urban to enter the club. Ingram gave several updates on twitter describing the incident and the

next day the Cirque Le Soir responded by saying that it had nothing to do with their race,

insisting that they had failed to follow door policies, which discourages male-heavy entourages.

That night, Ingram continued to share his experience online by retweeting reactions from fans

who are upset by the news with the hashtag #TooUrban. It is hard to believe the nightclubs
statement because this incident is similar to that of a group of black women who said they were

recently denied entry to a U.K. nightclub. The four women, who live in London, said they were

told they were too dark and overweight.

Both of these articles provide clear examples of social injustices and racial inequality.

Both situations were out of pocket and should have been handled much differently. Denying

someone access to a nightclub because they were a group of all black men is ridiculous and

cruel. The way that the professor at the University was ever worse. Chois will to go to work was

taken away from him due to the event that took place at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
