Introduction
In this video, youll learn how to add a Domain Name System (DNS) domain and
configure DNS servers on a Data Mover and on the primary Control Station.
Youll also learn how to verify that DNS property settings are configured to allow
dynamic updates.
Its important to note that Windows Server environments require a DNS server.
EMC strongly recommends that you set up a minimum of two DNS servers per
domain: one preferred and one alternate. Since a Data Mover can be connected
to different domains, it must be able to query different DNS servers.

Environment
Before we can configure DNS for a Data Mover, we will have had to have:
Configured a network interface for the Data Mover, and
Well need to know the Domain Name System (DNS) domain name and
the IP addresses of DNS servers
Weve already created an IP interface, and weve noted the DNS domain name
and the IP addresses, so lets get started.

Add a new DNS domain and DNS server on the Data Mover
To add anew DNS domain and DNS servers on the Data Mover, we must be
logged in as root. We can add multiple DNS domains, each of which can have
up to three DNS servers per Data Mover:
1. Well begin by logging in to the Celerra Manager as root.
2. Well click Network from the left pane.
3. From the Network page, well click the DNS Settings tab, and click the
New button at the bottom of the page.
4. From the Select a Mover list box, well select server_2.
5. In the DNS Domain field, type the DNS domain used by the Data Mover.
The DNS domain cannot exceed 155 characters.

Remember that the domain name we enter is not necessarily the root
domain name, but rather the sub-domain in which the Data Mover will be
located.
6. In the DNS Servers field, well type the IP addresses for the DNS Servers
used by this Data Mover. Well use commas to separate multiple entries.
7. There are two Protocol options. Well choose UDP, which is the default.

8. When weve finished, well click OK.

The green check mark and message at the top of the screen indicates
that the DNS domain was added successfully.

Well remain logged in as root to add a new DNS domain and DNS servers on
the primary Control Station:
1. Well select the Control Station from the left pane.
2. From the Celerra Home page, well click the Control Station Properties
tab.
3. In the DNS Domain Name field, well type the name of the DNS domain
in which primary Control Station is a member.
Here again, the domain name we enter is not necessarily the root domain
name, but rather the sub-domain in which the Control Station will be
located.

4. In the DNS Servers field, well type the IP addresses for the DNS Servers
used by the Control Station. Again well use commas to separate IP
addresses.
5. When weve finished, well click Apply.
The green check mark and message at the top of the page, which
indicate that the DNS domain was added successfully.

Verify DNS is configured to allow dynamic updates

Lastly, well verify that DNS is configured to allow dynamic updates. To ensure
that the Data Mover is able to update DNS with its IP information, DNS must be
configured to allow dynamic updates on both the Forward and Reverse Lookup
Zones.

It is likely that the Windows DNS server has been configured to allow dynamic
updates. For the purpose of example, well walk through the steps to verify the
property settings on DNS:
1. From your desktop, click Start > Programs > Administrative Tools, and
then click DNS.
2. Under DNS, double-click the applicable DNS server, double-click
Forward Lookup Zones, and then right-click the applicable zone.

3. Well click Properties.

4. On the General tab, verify that the dynamic updates? box is set to
Secure Only.
5. Click OK.
6. Double-click on Reverse Lookup Zones and
7. Click Properties?
8. On the General tab, verify that the dynamic updates? box is set to
Secure Only?

9. Click OK.
Celerra Data Movers support both traditional DNS and dynamic DNS in a
Microsoft Windows 2000 network.

DNS servers for each domain on the Data Mover and primary Control Station.
