Country of Origin

For this writing prompt, I chose to use Greece as my country I will be researching. The

Greek side of the family is on my Moms side, and I believe Greece has a colorful history. I

believe the Greek flag is one of the worlds most recognizable flags due to its colors and layout.

In the top left-hand corner there is a white plus, surrounded in the four corners by blue. Then

there are nine alternating blue and white horizontal stripes. In total there are five blue stripes and

four white stripes. The current flag was adopted recently, having been adopted on December

22nd, 1978. Greeces previous flag was pretty much the same, aside from the plus in the top left-

hand corner being diagonal. This version of the flag dates back to 1822, just after Greece

declared independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1821. An entire war for independence was

needed for the Greeks to adopt their own flag.

The national anthem of any country goes hand in hand with the flag. The national anthem

of Greece is named A Hymn to Liberty. It was written by a famous poet Dionysios Solomos in

1823. Dionysios became a poet during the Greek revolution. The revolution served as inspiration

for the anthem. It was officially adopted by Greece in 1865. With the revolution came a change

of regulations. With Greek national regulations, as of right now it is possible for me to become a

Greek citizen. I could claim citizenship either through my great grandfather from Greece, or

through military service in the Greek Armed Forces. Even if I claimed citizenship through my

relative, military service would still be required if I chose to live as a resident in Greece. Dual
citizenship is also allowed, with Greece having no problems with a dual citizen staying in their

country of origin. As far as cost of becoming a citizen, I could not find any hard facts about

Greece, but I found out information on becoming a citizen of Cyprus, which is very similar to

Greece due to them sharing many nationalistic ideals and policies. You must pay at least 200,000

Euros in tax to the government over the course of three years to become eligible.
