colours and from mixing a primary colour with white or with black.
Expectation(s)
- Students will interpret art work literally: colour variation is built on three basic
colours.
Learning Students will be able to:
Objectives 1) Predict the changes in colour that result from the mixing of primary colours
2) Describe the changes in colour that result from the mixing of primary colours
Objective #1 Collect master #29 colour mixing prediction sheet and students
Evidence
should be mixing primary colours and making a prediction of which secondary
(formative
colour will be made.
assessment)
Objective #2 Collect colour recipe books and students should have the equations
of what colours mix to make the new colour.

Topic A Creating Colour Grade 1 by Edmonton Public School
Introduction - Gather students on the carpet with bums on the carpet and not touching the
(10 min) bookshelf. Ask colour groups one at time to sit together on the carpet based on
which group is prepared and ready.
- Read the book mix it up to the students
Guiding questions when reading:
Focus on what colours are mixing
What colour they think is going to be created?
What do you think will happen?
What colour does black and white make?
What happens if we add white or black to a colour?

- Hands up. Only people with hands up will be listened to

- It is a fun and exciting book so expect the students to be silly but use attention
grabbers or breathing exercise to calm down

- Teacher Actions
oWe are going to mix it up!
oYesterday we found out that two colours can mix to make a new colour
oexplain to students that we are going to be mixing paint to create new colours
but before we mix colours as scientists we have to make predictions.
oAsk if anyone knows what a prediction is? Hands up. Predictions are when you
guess what is going to happen based on what you already know.
oShow students the master #29 colour mixing sheet and explain how before we
mix the colours we are going to predict what colour will be made. First, we put
our name and the date on the sheet and we can put Nov as abbreviated
version of the date. We are going to colour with crayons and fill in the circles.
For example, if we mix red with yellow what colour is going to be created?
Orange
o demonstrate how to colour the two circles red and yellow and the last circle
would be orange.
oWhat if we mix yellow with red? It does not matter the order because they
make the same colour.
oAfter our predictions we are going to make a colour recipe book.
o Show students the example colour recipe book
Whole Group
oExplain how the colour recipe book will be done.
Instruction
- we print our names nicely on the line of the front of the book.
(15 min)
- we put a circle of red and a circle of yellow on two different pages and just like
mix it up, we are going to press the pages together and see if the colour we
make is what we predicted.
- We are then going to write the equation red + yellow = orange on the line in
the book.
- After we will move onto the different colours.
- Ask if anyone has any questions?
- Transition Details
o We are going to be going into centers by colour group and write this on the
board

o Get students to fill out their prediction sheets with red and yellow, yellow and
Colour Recipe green and blue and red colouring using pencil crayons
Book o Get students put their name of the front of the book
(15 min rotations o we start by putting the colours on both sides of the paper and pressing the
x 2 = 30 min) pages together. Use the mix it up book as an example.
o Ask students what colour was made? Was your prediction correct?
o After, we will write our colour equation and I will write it on the chart paper for
an example
o continue with the rest of the colours

Review concepts:
- The colour equations
- From the book what happens when we mix white and black with colours?
This lesson was very hands on and interactive! It worked well in centers. I needed
to specify that the colour brushes cannot be mixed because it changes desired
Reflection
colour. I used coloured paper (red, yellow and blue) to designate where the
coloured paint brushes go. It was also very effective to write the colour equations
on the portable whiteboard. The book Mix it Up was very fun and interactive
but it can lead to students being very silly, so classroom management is very
essential during reading the book. This book can also be used to reference for
when students are learning about mixing primary colours with white and black.
The paper was very thin and got stuck together, so thicker paper could be used or
one page at a time, so it could dry. The paint didnt mix as well as I had planned
but we just used a paint brush to mix in the colours.
