DAILY PLAN
Lesson Title: A is for Art Grade Level: Pre K

S & S Statements: This is an introductory lesson on oil pastels and how to properly blend them into
a single, solid layer as well as a quick and simple drawing technique that can be
done through the use of etching.

Concepts and Skills: Students will be able to develop accurate oil pastel blending knowledge and
use etching techniques in order to cleanly produce drawings.

Vocabulary: Blending

Purpose of Lesson (Overall Lesson Objective): Students will learn to successfully blend oil pastels
as well as display effective use of etching techniques to display images that correctly correspond to
the letters in their name

Objectives: Given oil pastels, students will successfully display technical blending knowledge in
order to produce a solid background layer for their drawings.

Given examples of various things that start with different letters of the alphabet,
students will be able to accurately identify and produce an etched
drawing of objects that pertain to the same letters in their name
using Popsicle sticks

Assessment Criteria:
1. Students will be able to cleanly mix and blend oil pastels
2. Students will be able to successfully display etching techniques in their drawings

Teaching Resources Needed to Support the Lesson:

- Example of a finished product
- Have a list of examples for each step at the ready

Art Materials Necessary for the Lesson:

- Construction Paper
- Oil Pastels
- Popsicle Sticks
- Unsharpened Pencils

Introduction: Introduction

- Review a few examples of different animals - Students will correctly name the
 and/or objects that start with the same letter
as students first names
- Display the final product of the project theyll
be working on that day and write the name
that the example was based off of on the
white board (i.e. Vanessa)
- Identify the letters of the name that was
used in the example and name the objects/
animals that were used to portray each of
them
Development:
- One teacher will demonstrate how to cleanly
mix and blend oil pastels on construction
paper
- Cover sheet completely in black oil pastel &
review steps leading up to this part
- Same teacher will use their own name as an
example for their demonstration
- Teacher will demonstrate the best way to
use a popsicle stick to create sgraffito
effects on their drawings
- Using said popsicle stick, teacher will draw
out an animal/ object that corresponds to the
appropriate letter of their name
- As students work, teachers will walk around
and make sure that students are drawing the
correct animal/ objects associated with their
letters and provide help as needed
Conclusion:
- If time permits, students will gather around
the carpet and share the drawings theyve
made and why they chose the objects that
they did for this project
