Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Chronic Wound Therapy

Abstract

Background

A chronic wound is defined as wounds that fail to proceed through the normal phases of wound
healing in an orderly and timely manner. (1) In developed countries, it has been estimated that 1 2
% of the population will experience a chronic wound during their lifetime. (2)

The burden of treating chronic wounds is growing rapidly due to increasing health care costs, an aging
population, and rise in the incidence of diabetes and obesity. (2) Chronic wounds have a significance
impact on the health and quality life if patient and their families, causing pain, loss of function and
mobility, depression, distress and anxiety, embarrassment and social isolation, financial burden,
prolonged hospital stays and chronic morbidity or even death (3)

The treatment of chronic wounds is directed at correcting precipitating and perpetuating factors and
optimizing the wound bed. Despite the number of advances in technology (including growth factors,
cytokines, and substitutes), clinical outcomes are generally suboptimal. (4)

Stem cells can provide the next step in advancing wound care, particularly for chronic wounds
resistant to current therapies. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) affect different stages of the wound
healing process through its mechanisms, such as acceleration of wound healing, immunomodulation,
differentiation into epidermal cells, and paracrine signaling pathways (4,5)

Objective

The objective of this study is to review the ability of mesenchymal Stem Cells as an advance therapy
for chronic wounds.

Methods

Our study is a systematic review if the literature. We searched for published article describing the use
of mesenchymal stem cells in chronic wound therapy published in the last five years from search
engine google scholar with relevant keywords, inclusion and exclusion criteria
