November 2017 Roundup

In this issue:
This month was a little different as it wasnt a players night. Most of the
November Roundup evening was devoted to a master class by the wonderful fusion player
Tom Quayle who was ably supported by the guitarist David Beebee.
Membership
Gig Listings Tom focused most of his discussion of various modes as a basis for
thinking of different tones. He gave practical examples and he and
Of Interest David played some terrific, Giant Steps was an outstanding version. He
also introduced the melodic minor scale as a soloing medium. Tom has

Call for Membership Participation

We have had a few successful, I believe, examinations/investigations of members favourite tunes. If you
feel you could do a similar job please let us know. Send an email to huddjazzguitsoc@gmail.com or chat
to any of the committee at the next meeting.

Remember the HJGS exists for the benefit(s) of its members, so we need to hear from YOU: good, bad,
indifferent, news, views, gossip, ideas, viewpoints, gigs, sales wants, swaps... etc, etc!

Please keep us informed of any jazz guitar related gigs, events, sales or other item of interest, so that
we can pass information on to other members. HJGS needs to develop its wider network as an
important forum for jazz guitar related information and information exchange, so that we may all benefit
from the collective wisdom and uncoordinated information that undoubtedly exists amongst fans and
connoisseurs.

New changes to membership

The new changes to membership subscriptions are now in use. ALL membership subscriptions are
due in January. Members who joined in November and December will have paid a pro-rata fee to the end of
2016 and so the full subscription fee applies. Members with existing subscriptions running into 2017 will
only have to pay the balance based on the table below.
The pro-rata fees are: -
We are very grateful for the support you give the society
by subscribing as members. The monies enable us, on your
behalf, to continue the work of the Society.

The mathematicians, will no doubt, have realised that

20 equates to 1.67 per month. As this would result in people
having to carry inordinate amounts of small change with them, I
have rounded the figures to the nearest 50p. This should
reduce the wear and tear on the trouser/jean/skirt pocket and
go some way to reduce the possibility of lower back pain
caused by the extra coinage weight. Some people may feel
aggrieved at having to pay 17p more, whilst other will think
themselves very fortunate in saving 17p. Thats life.

3. Swap an Idea

The Min7th diminished scale

Ian Wroe
Following on from Darrens article in the October newsletter (Ed 72): The 6th Diminished scale. The 6th
chord shares the same notes as the minor 7th chord a 6th above (the relative minor). In Darrens article,
using C6 as the example, this shares all the same notes as Amin7.

C6 Chord tones Amin7 Chord tones

C6 Amin7
5th R 3rd 6th 7th 3rd 5th R

This is great for us, as players, since it means that we can use the same chord movements in two
situations.

For their live gigs, the Oxley-Meier Guitar Project aim to entertain by playing with a spontaneity
and an intuitive interplay between them that keeps them fresh and fired up from gig to gig. The duo
therefore comes to the performance with what they hope are the audiences anticipations: to expect the

Pete Oxley ~ Guitar

Pete began his musical career in Paris in the mid 80s before relocating to the UK in 1997. Shortly
afterwards he opened The Spin jazz club in Oxford which in 2012 won the Parliamentary jazz award as The
Best Jazz Venue In The UK. Pete regularly performs with some of the worlds leading jazz artists including
Chris Garrick, Gilad Atzmon, Tim Whitehead, Dave OHiggins, Bobby Wellins, John Etheridge and his
own band Curious Paradise. He has now released 14 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his original
compositions.

As a composer, Pete was recently selected as one of only a handful of British jazz musicians to have his
compositions included in the definitive European Real Book (Sher Music). www.peteoxley.com

Nicolas Meier ~ Guitar

With his unique style that is a blend of Metheny-esque jazz and Turkish inspired world music, Nick has
toured extensively around the world with his band the Meier Group. This wonderful band (featuring sax
maestro Gilad Atzmon and Dave O'Higgins) won the overall prize for best band at the Juan-les-Pins jazz
festival!

His recent album Kismet is a wonderful heady mixture of Flamenco, jazz, Latin and Middle Eastern music.
His prodigious jazz talent is matched by his other great passion: playing heavy metal guitar in his scorching
group Seven7.
Nick was, for the last three years, guitarist in guitar supremo, Jeff Becks band, with whom he toured all
over the world, performing at major venues and festivals. He has recently recorded a stunning album with
the A-lister rhythm section of Jimmy Haslip (Yellowjackets) and Vinnie Coliauta (Sting, Frank Zappa
etc.). www.meiergroup.co

6. Reviews
An interview with Neil Silverman from Newtone Strings.
Darren Dutson Bromley

Newtone Strings are a small, independent, string manufacturer based in Matlock, Derbyshire. The strings
are handmade and are of an exceptional quality.

The company was originally founded 1985 by Malcolm Newton, an engineer who gained a great deal of
knowledge and experience of the many applications of wire whilst working for the electricity company. After
working for Albion Strings in the 1980s Malcolm decided to branch out with his own brand. Having

15 of 29
Jazz Picks December 2017. Issue 74

designed a new string with a new tone it seemed appropriate to add an E to his surname and Newtone
Strings came into fruition. After working alongside Malcolm for 15 years Neil Silverman took over from
Malcolm when he retired in 2015.

Adrian Ingram, Ian Wroe and myself had a trip down to Matlock to meet with Neil and have a look around
the factory and see how Newtone strings are made. Every process is done by hand with real care and with
the passion that results in an excellent product.

We started the interview in his storeroom surrounded by shelves

containing coils of core and winding wire.

D.DB. Could you tell us about the kind of strings you make?

N.S. We can make anything. On these shelves weve got all the core and
plain wire, both round as well as hexagonal, youve got the choice.

I.W. Which do you use the most?

N.S. We generally use round, especially for acoustics and on the archtop
strings too. We find them very popular.

D.DB. Whats the difference between round and hexagonal?

N.S. The round core gives a little bit of a warmer tone, slightly lower
tension and we also stock a lot more sizes of that, it gives us more variations of what we can achieve. You
can go slightly thicker than normal or slightly thinner than normal and you can tailor the sound of the string
to how you want it to suit the guitar and you, rather than a type of string you might generally get. Coupled
with that we can do you 80/20 bronze, phosphor bronze, stainless steel or nickel-plated steel. So, youve
got the choice.

80/20 bronze and phosphor bronze are generally for acoustic instruments, the nickel-plated steel and
stainless steel are mainly electric. Archtop strings are generally nickel.

D.DB. What is the difference in tone between nickel-plated and stainless steel strings?

N.S. The stainless steel is much brighter, a lot harsher. Thats very popular with dropped tuned bass; it cuts
through the mix a lot more.

We also do double wraps which warms the tone up and puts you somewhere between a flat wound and a
single wound string.

Weve also got high tensile phosphor bronze that we use for sitars, sarods and ethnic instruments. Weve a
little bit of silver plated copper for your Django, gypsy jazz style strings.

D.DB. Do you do a lot of custom string set orders?

N.S. Yes, a lot. We are the only ones that really specialise in it. A lot of companies do custom gauge sets
but all they are doing is picking gauges off the wall that are all pre-made. We can make you one string
thats 0.036 say, we can make that up to five different ways.

D.DB. What is your biggest market?

N.S. Its widespread. We generally pick up on all the niche markets so obviously the jazz with the archtop
series, the double wound, they sell really well. We do a series of Django ones. At the minute Im getting
inundated with Dingwall bass players. These are multi scale 37inch basses, most bass strings dont fit them
apart from Dingwall, who do a few sets. Theres a company in America who does extreme stuff but other
than those two theres only us you can come too.

A.I. So a real bespoke niche market. When I first came across you back in the day you were just making
some flat wound and you were getting more into the gypsy jazz stuff.

16 of 29
Jazz Picks December 2017. Issue 74

N.S. Yeah, the flat wounds, weve never quite got there. Weve never been happy with what we are doing;
were still working on it. Ive got bass players queuing up for flat wound strings, they say soon as you
master it send us some.

DDB. How do you do it?

NS. Thats the thing; its difficult (laughs), theres an extra stage to get that nice polished finished smooth
edge.

D.DB. How do you polish it?

N.S. Thats it! Unless you buy a 30,000 machine.

A.I. Whats the compromise, like half rounds?

N.S. Again, you really need that polishing machine. Im playing around with the sizes of the tape to make it
easier to polish up.

I.W. We are both seven-string players, so weve even got a niche within a niche.

N.S. seven strings or eight or nine...

I.W. Ive got your round wounds on one of the archtops which Ive been using as an acoustic guitar, but I
had to get those from America would you believe.

N.S. Ive had a lot people say, Ive just bought your strings, you are only up the road. I bought them from
America. Weve stopped supplying shops now, weve decided to just sell direct. Its becoming increasingly
where they (the shops) are wanting more and more larger orders, there are only four of us and one of the
lads works part time. Hes actually a guitar tech, when hes not out on the road he comes here two or three
days of the week. Thats why all the Levellers guitars are piled up out there.

D.DB How long have you been making strings?

N.S. Seventeen years!

D.DB. How did you get into do it? Its not generally the thing you aspire to do.

N.S. I fell into it, straight out of college. One of the old technicians at the college used to work for Newtone.
When I was due to leave I said I wasnt going to go to university, I was just going to get a job and he said I
know where there is a job going and it was his old job. It was literally on my doorstep, less than a mile from
my house. It was the right place, right time.

D.DB. What did you study at college?

N.S. Music, I did a BTEC in popular music.

D.DB. Do you still play?

N.S. Yes, for my own amusement really, and to help understand what musicians are talking about. It does
help, Malcolm never played, and it was a bit difficult at times when guitarists tried to describe what they
wanted to get across.

D.DB. Its a similar thing with Leo Fender, he never played, yet he came up with some of the most iconic
guitars of all time. I wondered how he did it.

N.S. When you distance yourself from it youve got your own way of thinking.

A.I. You mentioned Dingwall basses earlier on; do you have any instrument makers, maybe independents
who use your string exclusively?

17 of 29
Jazz Picks December 2017. Issue 74

N.S. Yes, quite a few worldwide. Theres Unicorn basses in Sweden. We recently started to supply
Fibonacci guitars new archtops. Their first batch went out with Newtone archtop strings on them. Local
luthier R.H Guitars and Colin Keefe over at Long Eaton, quite a few, especially small independent luthiers.

D.DB. Where do you source your wire? Is it from America?

N.S. Yes, the UK for the phosphor bronze and the 80/20 bronze. America for nickel and stainless steel, all
the core wire is again all from America, mainly because its difficult to get hold of in small quantities. There
are UK suppliers who probably could do it but when they are wanting a minimum order of a tonne per size
and 20lb bobbin can last five years, theres not much point investing in all that.

I.W. You were talking earlier about the problems of doing tape wound strings. Do you still produce a tape
wound set?

N.S. No. Im looking to do it now. We did that first batch, but we were never quite happy with the material
that wed sourced at the time. Ive been trying to get into classical strings for a long time and weve
eventually managed to get some nylon. I think it took me five years to source a company that could actually
do it, and by the time Id done that the company that supplied the nylon first strings has stopped doing that.
Ive now got the core material, but I cant get the plains.

D.DB. The plain strings surely are just whatever comes out of the factory or do you have to do that as well.

N.S. No, but thats the problem, we havent found a supplier. You just buy it in long lengths and cut it down
to whats needed. Trying to source it is a bit of a minefield, to get a good quality one you need to test it and
there are many types of nylon like fluorocarbon nylon, there are so many variations that can be used. If
youre a big manufacturer with lots of money you can afford to invest the R and D to start with and put a set
out and say well have a million sets made like this over the next five years.

D.DB. Ordering from you direct, is there a minimum order?

N.S. No, at one time there was a minimum order, but weve stopped that with the website, when you order
them direct its much easier.

D.DB. Do you have anybody who endorses Newtone Strings?

N.S. Jon Gomm, Ralph McTell, Becky Langdon, she was on Guitar Star, a Sky Arts series. Jon Gomm
mentored her. Joe Brown, the Levellers use them. Hank Marvin has bought them from us. Weve got a new
signature set weve been developing with an Italian jazz guitarist called Marco Galiffa. He came to us
because he plays a range of guitars, L5 and other jazz guitars and of course they are all slightly different
scale lengths, so hes developed, working with us, these archtop sets but in specific gauges which work
well with each guitars specific scale length. Hes asked us to put these out as a signature set for him. Its
like the Jon Gomm series, its an extreme set that he drop tunes. Not only are they unusual gauges but
weve put thicker cores in there to help with the stability of the tuning. Weve also got Michael Messer,
Gareth Evans, a Welsh jazz guitarist and Dave Arcari, whos a blues slide player. I think that covers it,
without looking.

D.DB. Brilliant, cheers Neil.

N.S. No problem, thanks or coming down.

8. Sales
Please let me know as soon as items are sold to remove them from the list.

An important message to all contributors to the sales column.

Modern digital cameras take highly detailed pictures. This detail comes at a cost, namely huge file
size. If this newsletter becomes too big (approximately 6-7 Mb), some email services, particularly
academic institutions and businesses, will not deliver it.

If you want to include a picture of the sale item, or indeed item in our swap a lick column, then the
pictures need to be reduced in file size, preferably no more than 100KB per picture.

Hints. Try searching for optimising images for the web for help on this. Crop the image view to
show just the item.

I, unfortunately, dont have the time to spend optimising images for the newsletter. If they are too
big they risk getting left out.

Ian

Many guitars have been sold through our monthly sales listings. If an item is sold, as a
direct consequence of an ad being seen in the newsletter, we, the committee, would be
pleased to receive a small contribution to HJGS funds.

In order to keep the content fresh, we have decided that all ads will run for THREE editions
and will be deleted unless specifically resent.

Heres a message from Dan at Foulds Guitars

I'm running short of jazz guitars again! I've still got a bigger stock than most but decent jazzers between
300 and 1500 I'm selling everything I get so if you have any members that would like to move any
unwanted guitars on we may be able to help. Of course I am happy to offer a deal on goods for
members, they just need to mention when enquiring.

Jazz Picks December 2017. Issue 74

For Sale Gibson ES-175D

This guitar is a genuine Gibson, not a copy, and the serial number is stamped into
the back of the headstock so the authenticity of the instrument can be checked on
Gibsons website. It was manufactured in Gibsons Kalamzoo factory and
completed on 18th October 1979..
The guitar is immaculate, despite its 38 year age, not a mark on it, as it has been
very well cared for note the odd shadings in the photos are reflections not marks,
as the finish is so lustrous and deep its impossible to photograph it without these odd reflections
appearing. It is a very good example of these guitars, the best jazz guitars ever made. The photos dont do
it justice - it has to be seen to properly appreciate the mint condition.
The action is low and fast and the tone is what youd expect from a jazz guitar and it has the unique
signature hook cutaway body.
The instrument comes complete with its original Gibson plush fur lined hard case, which is also in very
good condition.
Im looking for 2750 ono.
