Pre-requisite Knowledge: Students will know before who Martin Luther King Jr. is, what he stood for and some details about his life.
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. Remember details about the I Have a Dream speech
2. Remember details about Martin Luther King Jr.
3. Analyze how change was brought about.
Introduction Ask the question, How do we Inspire change? Then write the answers on
(5 mins) the board for all to see.
Ask what do they know about Martin Luther King Jr. and write those details
down.
Ask them how he inspired change.
Development Watch the speech given by Martin Luther King Jr. entitled I Have a Smartboard/ projector for us to view the speech and
(20 mins) Dream video. Speech handouts for all to follow along
They can follow along with their handouts of the speech at this time with.

Watch a short video about the life of Martin Luther King Jr.
Activity Do only the first sheet of the math handout at this time which has The inspiring math handout
(18 mins) details about the speech and Martin Luther King Jr. Work in groups
of two.
After 10mins. meet back as a group and discuss how we felt about
the video.
Closure Analyze how his speech helped bring about change as group and write ideas
(5 mins) on the board.
Assessment Using details from the speech to complete the math sheet.

Differentiation If a student cannot follow along with the speech because of the sound they can just read an excerpt from it that I will select for
them. Place them with a person who works well with them in other subjects.
