Max. Marks: 50 Duration: 2 Hours

Answer all questions from Part A and any three full Questions from part B
Part A
Marks

1. A generating station supplies the following loads to various consumers: Industrial [5]
consumers-750 MW, Commercial Establishment-350 MW, Domestic Power-10 MW,
Domestic light-50 MW. If the maximum demand on the station is 1000 MW and the
number of kWh generated per year is 50x105, determine the diversity factor and
annual load factor.
2. Discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of transposed conductors and [5]
bundled conductors
3. With a neat schematic explain the working of thermal relays. Enumerate any two [5]
practical scenarios where thermal relays are used.
4. Explain differential protection of an alternator [5]

Part B
5. a) With the help of a schematic explain hydel and nuclear power station [6]

b) The power factor in a three-phase plant with supply voltage of 400 V and absorbing [4]
an average power of 300 kW is 0.8. Determine the kVAr of the capacitor required to
improve the power factor to 0.93. Determine the reduction in current drawn from the
supply after installation of the capacitors.
6. a) The arrangement of a double circuit single phase line is shown below. The segments [5]
of Conductor A are a and a and that of Conductor B are b and b. Calculate the
inductance per km of the line if the diameter of each conductor is 2.5 cm.

b) Derive ABCD constants of a medium transmission line with T model [5]

7. a) With the help of a block diagram explain static over current relay [5]

b) Discuss any two types of induction type electromechanical relay

8. a) A 2-wire d.c. distributor cable AB is 2 km long and supplies loads of 100A, [5]
150A,200A and 50A situated 500 m, 1000 m, 1600 m and 2000 m from the feeding
point A. Each conductor has a resistance of 001 per 1000 m. Calculate the potential
difference at each load point if a potential difference of 300 V is maintained at point A.
b) Discuss Percentage Differential Protection of a three phase star/delta transformer [5]
