ASSIGNMENT 2 BASIC CHEMISTRY (ENGE600009)

Lecturer: Yoga Wienda Pratama, S.T., M.T., M.Eng.

=====================================================================================

Rules:

a) This assignment is supposed to be a simulation of your midterm test. Accordingly, although you
are given 2 weeks to submit the answer, you are encouraged to try to solve all these problems
by yourself within 100 minutes (1 hour and 40 minutes). If you can solve the problems correctly
within the 100 minutes, you should be fine in the midtest.
b) This is an assignment, so that after attempting to solve this assignment by yourself, you are very
welcome to discuss the problems with your colleagues and with me. This is, however, not a
permission to just copy paste your colleagues works. If you do copy and paste your colleagues
works and allow your colleagues to copy your works, your answer sheet will not be graded.
c) Please provide structured and clear reasoning when answering each of these problems
d) You have to submit your answer sheet before October 28, 11.59 p.m. (please see code of
conduct for late submission)
e) Email your answer to ywpratama92@gmail.com
f) No worries, the real midterm test will be in Indonesian.
g) Good Luck!!!

1. A student added 1.01 L of water to a 43 mL solution containing 0.12 mole of H2SO4 for an
experiment. For the experiment, he spent 0.3 L of the solution. He knew that H2SO4 is a toxic and
dangerous chemical and therefore, he wanted to neutralize the acid by using 0.14 M of NaOH
solution. Determine what is the volume of NaOH he should add to neutralize the unused H2SO4.
2. Each of the following compounds has three possible names listed for it. For each compound, what is
the correct name and why arent the other names used?
a. N2O: nitrogen oxide, nitrogen(I) oxide, dinitrogen monoxide
b. Cu2O: copper oxide, copper(I) oxide, dicopper monoxide
c. Li2O: lithium oxide, lithium(I) oxide, dilithium monoxide
3. A sample of chloroform is found to contain 12.0 g of carbon, 106.4 g of chlorine, and 1.01 g of
hydrogen. If a second sample of chloroform is found to contain 30.0 g of carbon, what is the total
mass of chloroform in the second sample?
4. An element X has five major isotopes, which are listed below along with their abundances. What is
the element?
5. A 9.780-g gaseous mixture contains ethane (C2H6) and propane (C3H8). Complete combustion to form
carbon dioxide and water requires 1.120 mol oxygen. Calculate the mass percent of ethane in the
original mixture.
6. A student had 1.00 L of a 1.00 M acid solution. Much to the surprise of the student, it took 2.00 L of
1.00 M NaOH solution to react completely with the acid. Explain why it took twice as much NaOH to
react with all of the acid.
In a different experiment, a student had 10.0 mL of 0.020 M HCl. Again, much to the surprise of the
student, it took only 5.00 mL of 0.020 M strong base to react completely with the HCl. Explain why it
took only half as much strong base to react with all of the HCl.
7. Write down the complete and net ionic reaction of the following redox reaction in acidic medium
(show your works):
2 AgNO3(aq) + Cu(s) Cu(NO3)2(aq) + 2Ag(s)
8. Without looking at a periodic table of elements, determine the electron configurations of 73Ta. After
that, determine where the element is located at the periodic table (Period and Group) from the
electron configuration.
