Chemistry 31L
Policies

Carefully read and retain this document for future reference. Students are responsible for being
aware of the class policies listed below.

General Advice
Study outside of class. Read the book before the associated lecture.
Join a study group of 3-5 students. Meet every week.
Do problems from the book and online.
Understand the concepts. Do not try to memorize your way through.
Make use of available resources (Drs. Craig & Oas, TA's, tutoring, academic skills center)

Grading
Final grades will be based on exams and the laboratory as follows:

3 Hour Exams 400 points (100 points for Midterm 1, 150 each for 2 & 3)
Laboratory Grade 200 points
Homework & In-class Quizzes 100 points
Final Exam 300 points

TOTAL 1000 points

Accumulated point totals will be curved. Consistent with departmental history, the median grade will be
around a B-. Extra credit for CHM 31L is not available.

Laboratory
Enrollment and attendance in a CHM 31 laboratory section is required for every student enrolled in
CHM 3L. Note that the lab constitutes 20% of your grade in 31L. Lab experiments must be
completed in the section in which you are registered. Standard, safe laboratory procedures have to be
followed at all times. Safety glasses are to be worn at all times in the laboratory. Proper attire is
required; no contacts, shorts, sandals, or sleeveless shirts are permitted.

Do not wear nice clothes, or purchase a white lab coat (available at the Medical school bookstore).
Laboratory scores will be based upon preparation, attendance and laboratory reports. Students are
responsible for reading assigned material and completing all other pre-lab preparations before each lab
period. Labs will start on August 31.

Laboratory Manager: Dr. Melinda Box (1226 FFSC, 660-1521)

Webassign
Homework assignments will be delivered, submitted, and graded through Webassign. Instructions and
access to Webassign can be found on the course Blackboard site. Questions about accessing Webassign
or other similar technical issues should be directed to Dr. Chris Roy (croy@chem.duke.edu; 660-1518).

Recitation
Recitations will cover material and concepts from recent lectures. This is a great opportunity to ask
questions and get another perspective on the material. Recitations also provide an opportunity to earn
extra credit through strong attendance and active participation.

Examinations
Exams will be closed book, but you will be allowed to bring one 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper into the exam
room. The contents of the paper must be written by you and in your own handwriting (no computer
typesetting). You may not consult other books, notes, other students, desk graffiti, and so forth during an
exam. Failure to adhere to of any of these policies constitutes a violation of the Duke Community
Standard (i.e., cheating) and will de treated accordingly. Use of electronic calculators and molecular
models (do not assemble models beforehand) is permitted during exams, but they may not be shared. No
PDAs, cell phones, or any other devices with text storage capabilities are allowed.

Regrades
If you believe that your exam has been graded in error, you may request a regrade. Please note that the
entire exam will be regraded, not just the problem in question, and it is possible that your grade
will go down. Exams will be given on Scantron forms, and should be completed in #2 pencil. Regrade
requests will be accepted up to one week after the graded exams are distributed.

Absences
Only a Dean’s excuse will be recognized for missed labs or exams due to long-term illness, tragedy, or
the like. Short-term illnesses are handled through the University on-line short-term illness notification
process ( http://trinity.duke.edu/academic-requirements?p=policy-short-term-illness-notification ). The
Duke Community Standard applies to this process, and you will be held to that standard. No exceptions
to this policy will be granted. An unexcused absence from an exam will result in a score of zero. No
makeup will be given. This is a firm policy.

Additional Resources

Peer tutoring is available to students, free of charge, on a first come first served basis. Contact
the Peer Tutoring Office (684-8832).
Private tutoring is available, and a list of tutors is maintained by the chemistry department. The

http://www.chem.duke.edu/undergraduates/). Students are responsible (financially and otherwise) for
any arrangements they may make with a tutor.
The chemistry resource room (FFSC 1218) is available for sign-up during announced times.
The resource room will be staffed with a recitation instructor during those periods when students have
indicated they wish to use the room. There is a sign-up sheet outside FFSC 1218.
