# SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

In scientific notation, numbers are written in two parts, a whole number (between 1 and 10) and a power of ten.
Conversion in Scientific Notation
To convert any number into scientific notation, move the decimal point so that only one nonzero digit is
to the left of it. The value of the exponent id determined by counting the number of places the decimal was
moved
Complete the following converting to either common notation or scientific notation
702000 __________________

.000462 ______________________

72.4 ____________________

0.0197 _______________________

3.05 x 105 ___________________

3.22 x 10-1 ________________________

4.91 x 104 ____________________

847 _______________________

Addtion and Subtraction in Scientific Notation
To add or subtract in scientific notation, express each number to the same power of ten. The whole
numbers are added or subtracted in the usual manner and the power of ten is recorded. At the end of the addition
check to be sure you are in proper scientific notation, if not, change it.
Complete the following:
3.2 x 103 + 2.4 x 103 = ___________________
3.2 x 105 + 9.1 x 105 = ________________

= ___________________

4.76 x 102 + 8.7 x 103 = __________________ = ______________________
7.68 x10-5 - 9.7 x 10-6 = __________________ = _______________________
4.74 x 106 - 3x104 = __________________ = _______________________
Multiplication and Division in Scientific Notation (MADS)
Mulitplication and division are handled differently in scientific notation
When MULITPLYING exponents ADD them together
When DIVIDING exponents SUBTRACT the exponents
Complete the following:
(8.40 x 105)(2.00 x 103 ) = ______________________________
4.74 x 106 / 3.0 x 104 = ________________________________
(1.75 x 10-8)( 8.50 x 105 ) = ______________________________
1.80 x 105 / 3.00 x 10-3 = _______________________________
