Conceptual Framework

The researchers will anchor the conceptual framework of the study of Chen
(1996). He used the semantic formulae to analyze speech act as set of refusal which
consist of refusing request, invitation, offer, and suggestion.
Figure 1 shows the paradigm in which the study was anchored upon. It shows
the input/process and output of the problem study.
The input consists of the variables such as the respondents profile in terms of
age, gender and spoken dialect. It will also be take into consideration the perception
of the respondent in using refusal, the different between those who are Ilocano and
Tagalog in using refusal and if gender and dialect are discriminating factors in
refusal as speech act.
In the process, the data which will be gathered from the variables will be
analyzed and interpreted by conducting a survey using the questionnaire, interview,
and observation.
The output will be the desired results of the study which are to determine
students view of using refusal as speech act to determine in which language;
(Ilocano or Tagalog is prone to refusal, and to determine if gender is a huge factor in
refusal as a speech act of Grade II Senior High School of Patria Sable Corpus
College.
