General information about the laboratory

1. Induction motor test bench

The test bench includes power supply unit, control desk, 2,2kW analyzed induction motor and
6 kW DC motor operating as a load. The induction motor is supplied by a ABB ACS 800 fre-
quency converter. The load motor is supplied by Siemens Simoreg frequency converter.

Power supply unit

The power supply unit includes two measurement units. The voltage, current etc. can be
measured safely from the grid side and between the frequency converter and the motor. The
measurement circuits are scaled as follows:

BNC-connector in
Quantity Grid
control desk
Voltage 100 V 1V
Current 10 A 1V
Power 10 kW 1V
Torque 10 Nm 1V
Rotating speed 1000 rpm 1V

There is two outputs in the middle of the power supply (A1 and A2).

A1: You can connect the device, which input voltage is controlled. If the switch is in up-
position (1), the output is constant 400V. If the switch is in down-position (2), the output can
be controlled to be 0..400V. The voltage can be controlled with the green nousee (increase)
and laskee (decrease) buttons below the voltage measurement of the output A1.

Control desk

The switches in the control desk

S1: The main switch of the whole system. You can switch on the whole system by turning the
switch S1 to start-position (control circuit, measurement circuits and digital displays).

S2: The switch of the ABB ACS 800-frequency converter. You can give the speed reference
for the converter by using the nopeusohje (n) (speed reference) potentiometer, which is above
the switch S2. There is also the switch to choose the motor running direction.
General information about the laboratory 1

S3: The position suora (direct), connects the voltage of the output A2 directly to the motor.
The voltage can be constant 400 V (the switch of voltage A2 in the position 1) or the voltage
can be controlled (the switch of voltage A2 in the position 2). In this case, the measurement
unit of grid voltages and currents are bypassed, because when the motor is directly grid con-
nected, the motor voltages and currents are the same as the grid voltages and currents.

The position taaj.m. (frequency converter), connects the frequency converter between the grid
and the motor.

The used frequency converter is chosen by the taajuusmuuttajan valinta (choose of frequen-
cy converter) switch in the bottom of the power supply unit. If the switch is in the sisäinen
(internal) position, the motor is supplied by a ABB ACS 800 frequency converter. If the
switch is in the ulkoinen (external) position, some other frequency converter (ABB ACS 600,
Danfoss, Vacon…) is connected to the bottom of the power supply unit (the terminal screws
verkko (grid) and moottori (motor)). The voltage of the terminal screws verkko (grid) is
constant 400 V. Some other device can be connected also to there, e.g. motor protective relay
or soft starter. Notice, that the grid zero (blue) is not allowed to be connected to the red termi-
nal screw in the motor side! The reference point of the external voltage measurement device
can be connected to the red terminal screw in the motor side if required.

S4: The star-delta-start up of the motor can be tested

Switch position 0: no voltage in the transformer
Switch position Y: the motor start up with star-connected transformer
Switch position D: the motor start up with delta-connected transformer

S5: The load motor start up. The torque direction is chosen by JA/MO-switch. The load mo-
tor brakes (JA) or accelerates (MO) the induction motor. The amount of torque is controlled
by the potentiometer Tm. In addition, the additional inertia can be controlled by swith and the
potentiometer J.

Analog input: The load torque reference can be supplied to Tm by function generator (e.g.
step-wise torque reference)

In addition, digital displays occur in the control desk. The showed quantities can be chosen by
the switches, which occur next to the displays.

2. DC motor test bench

The test bench includes same kind of power supply unit, control desk, 4kW analyzed DC mo-
tor and 6 kW DC motor operating as a load.

The power supply unit includes two measurement units. The measurement circuits are scaled
in the same way as in the induction motor test bench. Note the scale of magnetizing current im
1 A = 1 V!

The analyzed DC motor is supplied by a ABB DCS 400 frequency converter. The load motor
is supplied by Siemens Simoreg frequency converter.

The switches in the control desk

S1: The main switch of the whole system. You can switch on the whole system by turning the
switch S1 to start-position (control circuit, measurement circuits and digital displays).

S2: The switch of the ABB DCS 400-frequency converter. You can give the speed reference
for the converter by using the nopeusohje (n) (speed reference 40..1275rpm) potentiometer,
which is above the switch S2. There is also the switch to choose the motor running direction.

S3: The load motor start up. The torque direction is chosen by JA/MO-switch. The load mo-
tor brakes (JA) or accelerates (MO) the analyzed DC motor. The amount of torque is con-
trolled by the potentiometer Tm. In addition, the additional inertia can be controlled by switch
and the potentiometer J.

Analog input: The load torque reference can be supplied to Tm by function generator (e.g.
step-wise torque reference). The speed reference for the analyzed DC motor can be supplied to
n by function generator (e.g. step-wise speed reference).

The used frequency converter is chosen by the DC-käytön valinta (choose of frequency con-
verter) switch in the bottom of the power supply unit. If the switch is in the sisäinen (internal)
position, the motor is supplied by a ABB DCS 400 frequency converter. If the switch is in the
ulkoinen (external) position, some other frequency converter is connected to the bottom of
the power supply unit (the terminal screws verkko (grid) and moottori (motor)). The voltage
of the terminal screws verkko (grid) is constant 400 V, 16A. The armature circuit of the mo-
tor is connected between the terminal screws A1 and B2. The magnetizing circuit of the motor
is connected between the terminal screws F1 and F2. In this case, the motor rotates as a motor
in III quadrant.
