9. PROCEDURE

9.1 Subgrade preparation

1. Subgrade preparation works of roadways and other areas subjected for concrete paving
shall be in accordance with relevant IFC drawings and project specification requirements.
2. Subgrade material shall have a CBR of 7 min. and thickness of 200 mm min..
3. Unless otherwise specified the entire subgrade shall be compacted to not less than 95% of
the maximum dry density as determined by AASTM D1557 or AASHTO T180 while within
1.5% of the optimum moisture content.
4. Compaction work shall be suspended during rain. In such cases care shall be taken to
provide temporary drainage do that the work can be resumed promptly after the rain stops.
5. The subgrade level shall be cleaned of mud or slurry. Ruts or other deformations shall be
trimmed and any soft spots that may have developed and replaced with suitable fill
material and shall be bare-rolled until the surface is hard and smooth
6. The subgrade level shall be properly shaped to the required profile by proper machine and
shall be rolled, well-compacted.
7. Construction traffic shall be prohibited after finish formation

9.2 Sub-base preparation

1. Sub base shall be placed not exceeding a layer of 150 mm in compacted thickness (SAES-Q-
006 sec. 5.2.2.1)
2. Sub base shall be compacted to achieve 95% of the maximum dry density as determined by
AASTM D1557 or AASHTO T180.
3. Sub base shall have CBR 25 min. (SAES-Q-006, Table 8).

9.3 Concrete Paving

1. Thickness of concrete paving shall vary depending on the type of paving specified in the IFC
drawing.
2. Galvanized welded wire fabric (WWF) shall be installed as shown in the IFC drawing and
size shall vary depending on the type of paving specified in the IFC drawing.
3. Lap length for WWF shall be200 mm min..

WWF/sub base. Spacer material shall be the same material for structural concrete works.
5. The surface shall be provided with a broom finish, free from separation, cracking and
precisely to the prescribed gradient to run toward the low point of paving during rain or
surface washing.
6. Curing shall be conducted for 5 days after surface finishing. Care shall be given to the curing
for about 24 hours after surface finishing. During curing, the surface shall be always
maintained in a wet and smooth condition and be protected from rain, wind, direct
sunlight, loads, impacts and other adverse influences.

9.4 Isolation, Expansion, Control/Contraction Joint

1. Isolation joints shall be provided around all foundation piers to separate concrete paving
and foundation.
2. Expansion joints shall be securely held in position during spreading and compaction of
concrete. Before sealing the joints, any accumulated dust or grit shall be removed from the
groove. Joint sealing compound shall be prepared and filled into the groove completely.
3. Expansion joints shall be straight and vertical and shall occur at high points and low points
of paving and elsewhere as shown in the paving drawing.
4. Expansion joins shall be maximum 18m apart.
5. Control/Contraction joints shall be maximum 6m apart.

9.5 Plasticized Sheet

1. Plasticized sheet shall be placed under concrete slab as shown in IFC drawing.
2. Plasticized shall be strong enough not to tear during concreting and shall be anti-
absorption.
3. Plasticized sheet shall be 0.15mm min. thickness polyethylene film. The overlap shall not be
less than 150mm at all joints and intersections.
