Grade 8 Farewell Mass

St. Michael Community School

June 15, 2017
6:30 PM

Theme: Psalm 147: 4: “He counts the stars and calls them all by name”

Student Greeting: Trisha Baylosis

Good evening! This evening, as we celebrate our Grade 8 Farewell, we think back
over the past nine years at the successes we have met to date, and we know we
haven’t made our journey alone. We have had a lot of support of our mothers,
fathers, teachers and fellow students.

In a sense, all of us here are sharing in the joy of this farewell tonight. However, this
is not just a night to remember and feel pride. It is also a threshold of a new journey
into high school, a journey where our book begins. The amazing adventures we
have in our future will make us stronger as we experience success, failures, joys and
laughter. Whether it is at school or at home, we will continue building a foundation
of learning experiences where we find nourishment in soul and body.

This evening, in both our mass and our program, we wish to focus upon our farewell
but also on our future. We want to acknowledge the journey we have traveled
together so far. We celebrate and praise God, thanking God for these past nine years
of school and for our families. We pray for future success as we take the next step on
our journey.

Reader: Ms. Baumgartner

Opening Hymn: Unto God

Opening Prayer: Father James

Lord our God, we pray that you will make us worthy of your call, and fulfill by your
power the hopes, dreams and adventures we have for the future. Grant us the
strength and wisdom necessary to hold onto our faith through Jesus Christ our Lord.

First Reading: Sirach 4: 20-28 Mrs. Sayer

A Reading from the book of Sirach

Take advantage of opportunities, but guard yourself against evil. Don’t underrate
yourself. Humility deserves honour and respect, but a low opinion of yourself leads
to sin. Do not let others have their way at your expense; do not bring on your own
ruin by giving up your rights. Never hesitate to speak out when the occasion calls for
it. Don’t hide your wisdom. Your wisdom and education can be known only by what
you say. Do not, however, go against truth, and remembers that you do not know
everything. Don’t be ashamed to confess your sins; there’s no point in trying to stop
a river from flowing. Don’t allow yourself to be dominated by someone who is
stupid or show partiality to influential people. Stand up for what is right, even if it
costs you your life; the Lord God be fighting on your side.

The word of the Lord.

Response: Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM - Psalm 25 Javanice

The response is “Lord, make me know Your ways”

1. Lord, make me know your ways

Lord, teach me your paths,
Make me walk in your truth, and teach me,
For you are God my savior. R.

2. Remember your mercy, Lord

And the love you have shown from of old
In your love remember me,
Because of your goodness, O Lord. R.

3. The Lord is good and upright,

He shows the path to those who stray,
He guides the humble in the right path,
He teaches his way to the poor. R.

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 9: 6-15 Mr. Schwebius

A Reading from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians:

Remember that the person who sews few seeds will have a small crop and the one
who sows many seeds will have a large crop. Each of you must give as you have
made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful
giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by
always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.
As it is written, ‘He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures
for ever.’

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your
seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched
in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God
through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the
saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God. Through the testing of
this ministry you glorify God by your obedience to the confession of the gospel of
Christ and by the generosity of your sharing with them and with all others, while
they long for you and pray for you because of the surpassing grace of God that he
has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

The word of the Lord.

Response: Thanks be to God.

‘You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be
restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.
‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after
lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light
to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may
see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
