Interchangeability

WARNING:

Snap Track systems are not interchangeable, and should not be intermixed with other manufacturers’ system components. This practice will void your Snap Track warranty, and cause a loss of UL Classication.

Our position and recommendation on INTERCHANGEABILITY is simple. To provide maximum protection of personnel and property, DO NOT INTERCHANGE or INTERMIX.

Snap Track straight sections, fasteners, and splices are designed, manufactured and quality controlled to the tightest tolerances within the industry. Only through strict adherence to all component tolerances were we able to achieve splices capable of being assembled without the use of bolts, nuts, tools, or eld fabrication and still achieve the necessary bonding (< 0.00033 ohm resistance) to be classied as an Equipment Grounding Conductor. Underwriters Laboratory requires manufacturers to not only submit the tray but also all splices, ttings, and fasteners prior to classifying the system. Consequently, UL Classication is not transferable should parts be interchanged or mixed with other manufacturers.

Therefore, we feel if a customer interchanges or intermixes Snap Track components with components of other manufacturers, they are deprived of the engineering, consistent performance, classication, reliability, and the safety of the Snap Track system.

Assembly

Snap Track Assembly Instructions

All Snap Track ttings are considered as splices for connecting tray and can be used as expansion joints. Carriage bolts and nylon insert nuts must be installed in the four 1.25” slots where expansion joints are required. A bonding jumper is required, per NEC 392 at each expansion joint.

Important: Tighten hardware at expansion joints and then loosen 1/4 turn. All other connections can be installed utilizing the patented Snap Track push pin. Snap Track installations should avoid possible re areas, hoist ways, and areas where severe physical damage could occur. Care should be taken to ensure the system is accessible. If possible, a minimum of 300mm (12”) should be left above and between runs to allow for cable installation and maintenance.

After determining the appropriate location, selection of expansion joints and installation of the support members, Snap Track is ready for assembly.

Step 1

Look at the physical appearance of the cable tray for any creases or bends. If the cable tray has any creases or bends, avoid using that section of the tray for splicing.

Step 2

All factory ends are straight and free from rough edges. After a cut is made to the cable tray and a splice end is used, make sure the tray ends are straight and free from any rough edges. This will allow the cable tray to slide more freely into the splice and also minimize cable snagging.

Step 3

When installing a splice to the cable tray, slide the cable tray into the splice a minimum of 4”. Line up at least (2) two of the 9/16” round holes for securing.

Step 4

Four aluminum push pins are provided with each splice. When the 9/16” round holes on the cable tray and the splice line up, apply thumb pressure to aluminum push pin to lock into position. You will hear a click when the pins are secure. Two push pins are to be installed on each side of the splice. Repeat this step until all push pins provided are used.

Note: The cable tray does not have to butt together in the tray splice. Leaving some space between channel joints will allow for adjustability and some thermal expansion.

For complete installation instructions refer to the Snap Track Installation Manual. www.techlinemfg.com

Snap Track Systems are designed and manufactured to meet or exceed the standards set forth in the NEMA Standard VE1-2009. Section 4.8.3 of NEMA Standard VE1-2009 states that Channel Cable Tray straight sections not exceeding 150mm (6 inches) in width and 50mm (2 inches) in depth do NOT require load testing; however, if load testing is conduct- ed, then load testing shall be conducted in accordance with Clause 5.2.

TechLine Mfg. deems that traditional load data information is an important factor for en- gineers, designers and other end users. Therefore, TechLine Mfg. has load tested Snap Track per the procedures in NEMA V1-2009 clause 5.2.

Under NEMA VE1-2009 clause 5.2.8-5.2.9 load ratings are determined either by Destruc- tion (Method A) or Residual Deection (Method B). Residual Deection is effectively the permanent recorded deection when the dened minimum test load is applied.

A safe working load is dened by IEC61537 as the load applied when deection equals the span length divided by 100, i.e. a 10 foot span would be allowed 1.2(in.) 30.48 (mm) of deection.

TechLine Mfg. recommends that Snap Track support systems be designed utilizing a safe working load as dened by IEC61537.

The values listed in the Snap Track Load Table were obtained using the procedures out- lined in NEMA VE1 clause 5.2 and the safe working load allowed by IEC61537.

Aluminum Alloy

Why Aluminum Alloy 6063-T6 Tray?

TechLine Mfg. is pleased to offer a complete cable tray system that is manufactured of Extruded Aluminum Alloy 6063-T6.

According to the Cable Tray Institute’s Technical Bulletin No. 13, one of the most important choices when designing a cable tray system for corrosive or outdoor environments is the material. Cable tray systems with a Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) nish (ASTM A-123) have been used successfully for many years. However, indus- trial contractors and engineers are beginning to prefer aluminum over galvanized nishes. The reasons are simple: Aluminum cable tray systems have been shown to have numerous advantages in design, installation, delivery, performance, and total cost over the lifetime of the installation.

Aluminum cable tray has a superior strength-to-weight ratio versus hot-dip galva- nized cable tray. This means less weight that the contractor has to carry around a plant which can make a difference in the number of workers required for an instal- lation. Aluminum is also superior to hot-dip galvanized in the aspect of when it is eld cut it does not require cold galvanizing, which is inferior to original galvanizing. Consequently, when you cold galvanize a piece of bare metal you have not restored the full strength and protection of the original galvanizing. Conversely, Aluminum Al- loy 6063-T6 has superior corrosion resistance in many chemical environments com- pared to HDG, and is sometimes referred to as marine grade aluminum. Aluminum can be cut or scratched and still retain its corrosion resistance without the need of a protective coating. When aluminum 6063-T6 tray is used with stainless steel hard- ware, the system can perform continually, with little to no degradation over time.

The ability to extrude aluminum is another reason 6063-T6 is preferred. By extruding our channel TechLine Mfg. has been able to obtain tighter tolerances that require less eld labor.

Snap Track Dividers and Grommets

Problems with EMI can be minimized by ensuring that all electronic equipment is operated with a good electrical ground system. In addition, cords and cables connecting the peripherals in an electronic or computer system should, if possible, be shielded to keep unwanted RF energy from entering or leaving. Common sources of EMI include power cables, radios, motors, lighting, and mobile phones.

EMI is the disruption of operation of an electronic device when it is in the vicinity of an electromagnetic eld (EM eld) in the radio frequency (RF) spectrum that is caused by another electronic device.

Installation Guideline: Whenever possible power cables and data cables should be run in separate trays to prevent EMI (electromagnetic interference). When this is not possible dividers should be installed to provide an EMI barrier.

Grounding and Bonding

Metal cable trays must be grounded and an electrically continuous system per NEC Article 392.

The ground network consists of all metal parts of a building connected together: beams, conduits, cable trays, metal frames or devices, all parts which must be connected together to guarantee the equipotentiality of the ground network.

Snap Track Cable Tray Can be used as an Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC)

Snap Track cable tray is UL Classied, marked with the available minimum cross sectional area and meets all requirements for use as an Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC) per NEC Article 392.60.

Standard Snap Track splices, tees, crosses, and elbows are also UL Classied as an EGC

com-

ponent and are bonded per NEMA VE1 clause 5.1.2. Standard Snap Track splices, tees, crosses and elbows do not require bonding jumpers. However it is recommended that bonding jumpers be installed with adjustable ttings and splices when they are used as expansion plates.

Installations Requiring a Separate Equipment Grounding Conductor

Per the minimum cross sectional area requirements of NEC 392.60, table 392.60 (A), 4” and 6” Snap Track tray can be used as an EGC for circuits not exceeding 1000 ampere, while Snap Track 2” tray can be used as an EGC for circuits not exceeding 600 ampere.

A separate equipment ground conductor is required for any circuits exceeding these limits.

A bare copper EGC should not be used with Snap Track aluminum tray

NOTE- NEMA Article 392.6 clearly states that a cable tray system must be electrically continuous but does not have to be mechanically continuous. Gaps between sections are restricted to 1.8m (6 ft). Cables must be secured to the cable tray prior to and after the transition, and protected by guarding or location. The electrical connection between sections can be maintained with bonding jumpers or a ground wire.

Snap Track angle can be used as a guard for an EGC or other cable when used with bonding jumpers or separate grounding clamps. This can increase the efciency of the cable tray system at awkward intersections.

alternative bonding jumpers and a separate EGC sized according to NEC Table 250-

122 should be installed. See page 52. Either a separate EGC must be included in each cable and bonded to the tray or a separate individual EGC, rated for the maximum ampere of the circuit breaker, must be attached to the cable tray.

Note- When power and non-power cables are installed in the same tray, the cables should be separated with a metal barrier – see page 48

Bonding To Building Steel Or Earth

The cable tray system should be bonded to building steel and earth every 60’ (18m) for proper ground fault protection and signal grounding (“noise” prevention). When spans exceed 60’ and are not inherently bonded to building steel and earth through metallic supports, an additional EGC connecting to earth or the facility ground network should be installed.

Equipotential Ground Network

When installed correctly the Snap Track system will create an equipotential ground network that will transmit all fault currents to ground, thereby providing protection of people and property and minimizing system “noise”.
