HOMEWORK 1. INTRODUCTION TO CONTROL SYSTEMS

1. Give 5 examples of control systems and describe its operation. Identify the
input and output in each system. Write your answer on the table below. You
can use another sheet if necessary. (5 points)

Control System Operation Input Output

Emergency Light When the device is Electric Turning off/on of
plugged in to a UPS, it Current/Absence of the light
charges the battery electric current
and the light is
turned off. If the
current stop flowing
from the UPS, the
transfer switch will
turn the light on and
begin consuming the
charge from the
battery.
Car airbag system An accelerometer rapid deceleration of inflation of airbag
detects the rapid car
deceleration of a car
when it crashes
which signals the
circuit to inflate the
airbag.
Analog alarm clock The alarm hand is set setting the alarm hand alarm sound
to a specific time by turning a gear
which sets a spring to
stop the mechanism
of the bell hammer,
when the hour hand
touches the alarm
hand, this releases
the tension and
vibrates the bell
hammer to produce
sound.
Circuit Breaker When too much Large amount of interruption of flow
current is flowing electric current flow of current
through a device, the
flow of current is
stopped by springs or
compressed air, or by
thermal expansion or
magnetic field.
Electric Kettle When the kettle is Cold Water Boiling Water
turned on, the
heating element
heats up and heats
the water to boil. The
heating element is
controlled by a
thermostatic switch
which turns off the
switch if it detects the
steam

2. Devise a control system to automatically raise and lower a lift-bridge to

permit ships to pass. No continuous human operator is permissible. The system
must function entirely automatically. (5 points)

The proximity sensors in the front placed a few meters from the bridge will
detect if a ship is passing by and will pass through the bridge. If a ship is detected, the
roads from both sides of the bridge will be alarmed about the ship and will indicate a
stop sign for those who are about to enter the bridge. Once the bridge is cleared, the
gates will be close automatically and the bridge will now move enabling the ship to pass
through. The Proximity sensors at the other end will detect if the ship have passed
through bridge. The image detector at the front will detect if there are still ships nearby
that have yet to pass through the proximity sensors at the front. If there are still ships
left to pass through, the bridge will stay in its position until the image sensor no longer
detects ships nearby.
