In collaborative interaction scenarios between a human and a robot, the robot’s ability to
recognize the movement gestures of a human is crucial to understanding the underlying intent.
Gestures have long been considered as an interaction technique that can potentially deliver more
natural. A fast gesture recognition scheme is proposed to be an interface for the human-machine
interaction (HMI) of systems. The system presents some low complexity algorithms and gestures
to reduce the gesture recognition complexity and be more suitable for controlling real-time
computer systems.
The entire system captures the real-time image which is colour image as input. The
system uses serialized database for storing gestures. Here we are focusing on interaction between
human and computer machine system. The first option is to eliminate most background regions
to remain the object region when the background of implemented environment is less complex.
The second option is to detect object regions by colour or brightness. The object region detection
is a very important procedure for identifying the shape and area of each object.
Object detection serves as major thing in gesture recognition. Many environment and
image problems are needed to solve at this stage to ensure that the contours or regions can be
extracted precisely to enhance the recognition accuracy. Common image problems contain
unstable brightness, noise, poor resolution and contrast. The other factor includes object
recognition. The detected objects are recognized to identify the gestures. At this stage,
differentiated features and effective classifiers selection are a major issue in most researches. The
behaviour or analysis of the object are done using different transforms involved in the image
In the image pre-processing, transformations, Image Filtering technique, noise filter and
equalization method are used to enhance the important information for the gesture detection and
recognition. Depending on the transform chosen, the input and output images may appear
entirely different and have different interpretations. In Image Filtering technique, the value of the
pixel of any given image is determined by applying algorithm to the value of the pixels in the
neighbourhood. There are mainly two types of Image Filtering.
 Spatial Filtering
 Linear Filtering

The Gaussian filter and the median noises filters are noise filters both can reduce most
noises and still can remain feature information for hand detection and gestures.

If the process records a stream of images then they can be classified using motion
models. In general we use Markov models which is a stochastic model used for randomly
changing systems. There are other 2D models which include spatial gesture models can be used
for interaction with computers.
