INTRODUCTION

The UST Chemical Engineering Society Quiz Show, customarily

known as KEMIKALAN, is an annual quiz show organized by the

Student Affairs Committee of the UST Chemical Engineering Society

(UST-ChES). Being one of the most awaited events during the

Chemical Engineering Week (ChE Week) in the University of Santo

Tomas, this served as a window to showcase the academic inclination

of UST Chemical Engineering students as they battle with their wit

and intelligence while promoting camaraderie, sportsmanship, and

healthy competitiveness.

For more than 40 years, qualified students are challenged on

questions from the fundamental courses that are taken up by a

Chemical Engineering undergraduate major. These major courses

include: Mathematics, Engineering Sciences, Chemistry, and

Chemical Engineering.

This year, additional challenges and twists were made on the

quiz show. Forces got stronger than before, the environment of this

game just got more vicious than the previous ones. It will be a quest

that will need their wittiness and strategies to find out who can

unleash the force from within … who can go beyond what is expected

… who will stand out to win. The force beckons. Can the force be

with you and conquer all doubts and odds?

QUALIFYING PHASE

The duration for the KEMIKALAN Qualifying Phase is from

January 16 to January 21, 2017, and interested students who applied

will be given a qualifying exam on the said dates. Failure to attend the

exam will lead to forfeiture of their slot.

The Academic Affairs Committee Staffs shall take charge of the test

proper. The participant must answer the qualifying exam right after the

paper was given. No participant shall take home a copy of the exam paper.

The qualifying exam is good only for thirty (30) minutes. No participant is

allowed to interact with others while taking the test. No participant shall

re-take the said exam. Accomplished exam papers will be submitted to

Student Affairs Staff-in-charge. These papers will be turned over to the

Student Affairs Committee Staffs for checking and ranking. Students that

will be caught cheating or opening any kind of reference material will have

their papers relieved and will no longer be a part of the exam.

The final list of qualified participants and their respective teams will

be posted on January 21 and 22, 2017. The assignment of members to

their respective teams will be done randomly using a computer simulated

random number generator. All qualified participants will be automatically

pre-registered in the KEMIKALAN Quiz Bee. Any participant who wants to

withdraw their application can talk or send an e-mail to the project head/s

of the Quiz Bee personally or on their e-mails at least two working days

before the quiz show. In case a qualified participant had withdrawn his or

her application, the replacement will be chosen based on the ranking of

high scores in the KEMIKALAN Qualifying Phase.

ELIGIBILITY AND REGISTRATION

All qualified participants are expected to be at the KEMIKALAN venue

from 7:30 A.M. to 8:30 A.M. on January 31, 2017 for registration and

verification of their eligibility. Only bona fide members of the UST Chemical

Engineering Society (UST-ChES) can join in the competition. Participants

must be in either school uniform or in smart casual attire.

GENERAL RULES

 The KEMIKALAN Quiz Show will comprise six (6) teams with four (4)

members apiece. Each member represents a particular year level.

 Each participant is allowed to bring only one (1) non-programmable

calculator and pens. The KEMIKALAN Scouts will provide the necessary

scratch papers, marker, and answer slates.

 Major rounds in KEMIKALAN consists of Warm-Up Round, Laminar

(Easy) Round, Transition (Average) Round, and Turbulent (Difficult)

Round. The questions for each round will come from the Mathematics,

Engineering Sciences, Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering Domains.

The breakdown of the questions are as follows:

 The use of calculators for the questions under College Algebra, Plane

Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry, Differential Calculus, and Integral

Calculus are not allowed. A team that uses calculator(s) under these

categories will get zero (0) points for that item and one (1) warning

point.

 In the event that the answers to the questions are flashed prematurely,

the question in consideration will be invalidated and the KEMIKALAN

Committee shall replace the question with a new one under the same

domain.

 The top 3 teams at the end of the quiz show will be awarded as the 3rd

Placer, 2nd Placer, and 1st Placer respectively. In case of a tie for

certain positions in the top 3, clincher questions will be given. These

questions will come from all of the domains mentioned except for the

general knowledge domain.

 There will be a panel of three judges that will supervise the questions

and answers of the quiz bee, two (2) of which are professors of the

Chemical Engineering Department and one (1) from the Engineering

final.

CONTEST PROCEDURE

Orientation

 The program will officially start at 8:00 a.m. on January 31, 2017. Prior

to this, the participants will have a registration followed by a briefing

together with the KEMIKALAN Committee regarding the Rules and

Mechanics. The contest rules shall be read before the quiz show proper

for the benefit of the audience.

 A team member who fails to appear after the presentation of the

contestants shall automatically lose by default. The KEMIKALAN

Committee will not provide a replacement for the corresponding team.

The Quiz Master(s)

 The Quiz Master(s) initially presents the contestants and their team

names, the panel of judges, and explains briefly the rules and

mechanics of the quiz show.

 The Quiz Master(s) shall read each of the questions twice. The time-

limit will start when the Quiz Master(s) finished the second reading of

the particular question.

KEMIKALAN Scouts

 Seven (7) KEMIKALAN Scouts will be around during the quiz show. Six

(6) KEMIKALAN Scouts are in-charge for each of the participating teams

while one (1) KEMIKALAN Scout are in-charge for the participating UST

Chemical Engineering Quiz Team.

 Provides the necessary scratch papers, markers, and answer slate to

the corresponding team;

 Monitors if the corresponding team follows the rules and mechanics

of the game;

 Collects the answer slate for checking and returns it after;

 Breaks the game in the event that the corresponding team raises a

question;

 Validates the score of the corresponding team;

 Distributes snacks to all of the members of the corresponding team;

and

 Maintains the formality and order of the quiz show.

Order of Questions

 The questions in each difficulty will be flashed in a random order of

domain. The questions will proceed if the previous one is answered

and/or considered invalid.

Scoring and Time Limit

 There are two major types of questions for each major round: the

objective-type (identification, enumeration, multiple choice, true or

false, and fill in the blanks) and problem solving-type questions.

 The scores and time limits for each of the question types in each round

are following are summarized in a table below:

Objective-Type Problem Solving-Type
Round
Score Time Limit, s Score Time Limit, s

Warm-Up 10 15 -- --

Laminar
10 15 30 30 to 60
(Easy)
Transition
20 15 40 45 to 120
(Average)
Turbulent
30 15 50 60 to 180
(Difficult)

At the end of the game, the team with the highest number of

accumulated points wins.

Final Answer

 Each team shall write their answers on the answer slates provided by

the KEMIKALAN Scout-in-charge. All final answers must be encircled,

boxed or underlined. Answers that are not done in such way will not be

credited.

 The answers written on the answer slate may still be changed with a

new answer if the time limit for the question has not yet expired.

 Rounding-off of calculated values should be done in the final answers

only, and free-floating decimals should be kept during the preliminary

calculations. Unless otherwise stated in the problem, all of the final

answers in numerical form should be reported with two (2) decimal

places and must not be written in scientific notation unless otherwise

stated. The even-rule of rounding-off of numbers must also be strictly

followed.

 All answers should have appropriate units. Answers that do not have

appropriate units will not be credited.

 If the required answer is a word or phrase, correct spelling including

capitalization and punctuation shall be strictly checked. Abbreviations

and acronym shall not be accepted unless otherwise stated.

Twist

 At the end of the Warm-Up Phase, the 6 teams will be given powers of

the planets based on scores. The team with the most points will have

the first pick their power, so on and so forth. Team powers can be used

2 times per round, and unused powers in each round will not be taken

over the next round. Team powers are also not allowed to be used on

the last question of the Turbulent (Difficult) phase. The UST ChE quiz

team are always considered to be nomads in the event and therefore

will not have any power, but are immune to the planet powers.
 Planets and their Powers

 Coruscant: The power of their planet to extend their time for a certain

problem (20 seconds for Laminar, 30 seconds for Transition, and 40 seconds

for Turbulent).

 Felucia: The heavenly body power to increase the question’s points by 50%.
If the answer is wrong however, the team will have to pay half of the

question’s points.

 Hoth: The power of the planet to freeze two opposing teams, preventing

them to get points on a certain question at the cost of 20/40/60 points.

 Naboo: The planet power to peek the opposing team’s answer for a certain

question. They can also choose to copy the opposing team’s answer or to stay

with their answer.

 Serenno: The planet power to give clues on objective-type questions or to

give the first step in the solution of problem solving-type questions. Upon

doing so, the points that will be merited will decrease by 20% for that

question. This power is limited only to this team.

 Tatooine: The heavenly body power to copy another group’s power (except

Serenno) but will have a decreased effect. The effects are as follows:

 Coruscant: 10 seconds for laminar, 20 seconds for Transition, 25

seconds for Turbulent.

 Felucia: the question’s points will increase by 20%. The point

penalty will be 25% of the question’s points.

 Hoth: Only one team can be frozen by this power at the cost of

20/30/40 points.

 Naboo: They will forcefully copy whatever the answer of the

selected team will be.

Bonus Round

 There would be sets of questions that are not classified as Warm-Up,

Laminar, Transition or Turbulent, but rather STEADY-STATE or

UNSTEADY-STATE. The team/s who get the correct answer can deduct

30 points from their opponent’s score.

 The questions for the bonus round consists of different trivia that are

related to Chemical Engineering domain only. These questions will be

asked at the end of Laminar and Transition Phases during the game.

 Answers for the bonus round will be written in the answer slate, they

are also collected by the representative Kemikalan Scout and returned

once the answers are confirmed.

 The use of powers in the bonus rounds are prohibited.

UST-ChE Quiz Team

 The UST Chemical Engineering Quiz Team will be the guest participants

in KEMIKALAN. The UST-ChE Quiz Team shall follow the same rules and

mechanics of the game as the regular team participants do. No UST-

ChE Quiz Team member shall act as a coach of any participating team.

Violations

 Disobeying instructions and rules is considered an offense and will earn

the team a warning. After three warnings, the team shall automatically

be disqualified.
 Coaching (giving audible or visible signals) from the audience will result

to the invalidation of the given question. The KEMIKALAN Committee

reserves the right to replace the question in cases such as this.

 Cheating, in any form, of any member of a team will result to the

corresponding team’s automatic disqualification.

 The use of cell phones and other gadgets that are not required during

the quiz show is equivalent to two (2) warning points.

Tie-breaker

 To break ties in certain positions in the top 3, clincher questions will be

given one at a time.

 If the tie remains unbroken after three (3) questions, the Sudden Death

Rule shall apply. The Sudden Death Rule stipulates that the first team

to give a correct answer for the question will get the point.

PROTESTS

 Only the contestants shall be allowed to file protests. If a protest was

raised, the representative of the team must raise their Team Placard

and wait for the Quiz Master(s) to acknowledge them.

 Protests regarding a particular question must be made before the

reading of the next question. Protests regarding a particular question

will no longer be entertained once the Quiz Master(s) have already

started reading the next question.

 The Panel of Judges shall deliberate on all protests. Their decision shall

be final and irrevocable.
