 Put your money where your life is!
In today’s interconnected world, it is easy to see how
your hard-earned money can end up going towards proj-
ects and businesses all around the world. In 2013, British
Columbians contributed $4.5 Billion of new monies into
their RRSPs, much of that money disbursed outside the
Province and Canada. Imagine what an impact we could
have by redirecting just 5% of that money back into the
communities in which we live – $225 million in annual
local investments. The idea of Community Impact Invest-
ing aims to do just that.
Community Impact Investing is the process of connect-
ing local investors to local investment opportunities. While
the demand for investing locally is increasing, traditional
options available to investors limit where they can invest.
The result is that most local investment capital leaves our
community and is invested into far off stock markets and
corporations. An unintended consequence is that while
our investments create significant jobs and wealth else-
where, the places we live, work and play are overlooked.
Eden Yesh – Invermere Branch Manager for Kootenay
Employment Services (KES), consultant to the Creston &
District Community Investment Co-op and Chair of the
BC Community Impact Investment Coalition – will host
Community Investment sessions in most communities
throughout the Kootenays. These sessions will highlight
examples of how local investment vehicles have success-
fully met community needs across Canada, such as; afford-
able housing, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture
and food production, locally owned small business, tech-
nology and community economic development projects.
The purpose of these sessions is to discuss the local
investment movement in British Columbia and the
opportunity to establish two new Community Invest-
ment Co-ops in Southeastern BC in 2018. The yearlong
initiative will be facilitated by Eden Yesh and funded in
part by the Province of BC, Kootenay Employment Ser-
vices and the BC Rural Centre.
“Community Investment Co-ops tend to generate not
only employment and economic activity, but also civic
pride and new attitudes about local ability to drive positive
community change. These Co-ops offer mentorship, sup-
port and a connection with local investors and customers
who have a vested interest in their success.” Eden Yesh.
Each community investment session is open to the
public. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided
and admission is free. There is limited seating in each
community so please RSVP right away.

Green light for
Arrow Lakes Hospital project
Kootenay West MLA Katrine Conroy joined represen-
tatives from the West Kootenay Boundary Regional Hos-
pital District (RHD), Interior Health (IH), Arrow Lakes
Hospital Foundation and Arrow Lakes Health Care Aux-
iliary Society today to celebrate the approval of $2.1 mil-
lion in upgrades to the acute and emergency department
spaces at the local hospital.
“Arrow Lakes Hospital supports thousands of patient
visits every year and our government recognized the need
for these major improvements, especially to the local
emergency department,” says MLA Conroy. “Local and
regional representatives were passionate in their commit-
ment to this project and I’m pleased to see that it is mov-
ing ahead. This will support quality care for local patients
for years to come.”
Highlights of the project will include a dedicated triage
area; two new trauma bays; renovated patient exam bays
with improved privacy; new utility rooms; and an enclosed
multipurpose meeting room near the ED for family con-
sultations or waiting space for family during trauma situ-
ations. The scope of the project was determined through
an initial planning and assessment phase funded by the
WKBRHD, which included direct input from the hospital
staff and physicians.
“The emergency department redesign will improve
patient privacy, flow and the overall quality care our staff
and physicians are providing to residents accessing ser-
vices at Arrow Lakes Hospital,” says IH Board chair Dr.
Doug Cochrane.
The WKBRHD has already committed to 40% funding
for this project. “The West Kootenay Boundary Hospital
District board is very pleased to see the Arrow Lakes Hos-
pital has been approved,” says RHD chair Aimee Watson.
“As one the board’s priority areas, we’re very grateful to see
this moving towards the construction phase.”
IH is also in discussions with the Arrow Lakes Hospital
Foundation and the Arrow Lakes Health Care Auxiliary
Society about contributions to new equipment for the
emergency department that will be part of these overall

ment from the start of construction. Work would take
place in three phases to ensure ongoing care is provided

are invited to apply to attend the Leadership Summit in
Kimberley on May 4 to 6, where they will strengthen their
abilities, learn about themselves and their communities
and have fun!
“An event like this is an exciting way to connect Basin
youth, tap into their leadership potential and help them
grow and make a difference,” said Aimee Ambrosone,
Director, Delivery of Benefits, Columbia Basin Trust.
“They’ll be developing the skills – including decision
making, networking, collaborating and public speaking –
that will carry them into their futures and give them the
foundation for effectively engaging in their communities.”
During the weekend, youth will interact with new peo-
ple, try new experiences and get their brains and bodies
moving in a fast paced environment. They’ll learn about
community planning and collaboration, practice public
speaking and stage presence and take part in entertaining
skill building workshops.
