Calculating Fastener Hole Size using True Position Tolerances

Determine the type of fastener condition:

a. Floating condition use formula H = F + T
b. Fixed condition use formula H = F + TP1+TP2 or F + 2(TP)
(Applies at MMC)

Floating Fastener Condition – this is used for two or more multiple clearance
holes for mating assemblies using through bolts and nuts or non-countersink
head rivets.

Fixed Fastener Condition – this is used for two or more multiple fasteners that
use a clearance hole in one part and a threaded hole in the mating part,
countersink head fastener, countersink head rivet, locating pins/ dowels in a part
mounting onto another part.

Floating hole size calculation:

H - nominal hole diameter
H = F+T F - fastener diameter (major dia)
T - true position tolerance

H = .250 + .014 .250 is for a ¼ dia bolt

= .264 .014 is the true position tolerance
( +/- .005, or a tolerance of .010 in the x
and y axis)
Go to standard industry size twist drill chart and select the next higher drill size
available. See text book or handout. Add allowable tolerance for the drilled hole.
Note a .250 drill will not drill a .250 hole in the part. It will be larger by a few .001.
Larger the drill diameter the more tolerance is required. Only sizes available to
drill a hole are those that are available in industry

H (this is what goes on the drawing) = .265 +.006/-.001

Add the true position tolerance frame under drill size. This gives the hole location
tolerance allocation
Final Callout is = .265 +.006/-.001

All dimensions are now BASIC, dimension callout has within a box
Fixed Fasteners
H - nominal hole diameter
H=F+TP1 + TP2 F - fastener diameter (major dia)
TP1 - true position tolerance hole 1
TP2 - true position tolerance hole 2

Note: the true position tolerance can be different

H = .250 + .014 + .014 .250 is for a ¼ dia bolt

= .278 .014 is the true position tolerance
for both parts
( +/- .005, or a tolerance of .010 in the x
and y axis)
Go to standard industry size twist drill chart and select the next higher drill size
available.

H (this is what goes on the drawing) = .281 +.006/-.001

Add the true position tolerance frame under drill size. This gives the hole location
tolerance allocation
Final Callout is = .281 +.006/-.001

All drawings using multiple holes for this class shall be dimensioned and
toleranced as shown using this technique.

TP will vary depending upon design requirements. TP tolerance can be different

for each part, again depending upon the requirements
