 ASSIGNMENT QUESTION

There are six principles of ethical conduct in the counseling profession. They are fidelity,
autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice and self-respect. You may find this
information in Topic 10 (Ethical Principles of The Counselling Profession) in your module.

Hence, you are required to:

(a) Discuss the SIX principles of ethical conduct by referring to at least five existing
ethical codes or reference books on guidance and counselling. Among the
existing ethical codes are Malaysian Code of Ethics for Counselors, American
Psychological Association (APA)-Code of Ethics and American Counselling
Association: Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. You may also refer to other
ethical codes.
(b) For EACH of the principles of ethical conduct, provide a case study. Given is an
example of a case study which illustrates the principle of beneficence.

A client comes to a university counseling center with an eating

disorder. No one of the counselling center has expertise in this area but
the client is in need of services and is assigned to a female counselor.
The counselor is aware that she lacks the knowledge and skills to work
effectively with the client’s issues, and seeks consultation and
supervision from a private practitioner who specializes in eating
disorders. Is the counselor acting in the best interest of her client?
Yes. This scenario illustrates the principle of beneficence. Counselors
are obligated to possess appropriate levels of competence in terms of
knowledge and skills to work with particular client issues. When no
other qualified counselor is available within a particular agency, it is
appropriate and the counselor’s ethical obligation to seek consultation
and supervision.

Terdapat enam prinsip kod etika dalam profesion kaunseling. Keenam-enam kod etika
tersebut ialah fidelity, autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice dan self-respect.
Anda boleh dapatkan maklumat ini dalam Topik 10 (Ethical Principles Of The Counselling
Profession) dalam modul anda.

Oleh yang demikian, anda dikehendaki:

(a) Bincangkan KEENAM-ENAM kod etika dengan membuat rujukan sekurang-
kurangnya lima kod etika yang sedia ada. Anda juga boleh merujuk kepada buku
rujukan bimbingan dan kaunseling. Antara kod etika yang sedia ada ialah
Malaysian Code Of Ethics For Counselors, American Psychological Association
(APA)-Code of Ethics dan American Counselling Association: Code of Ethics and
Standards of Practice. Anda juga boleh merujuk kepada kod etika yang lain.
(b) Bagi SETIAP prinsip kod etika dalam profesion kaunseling, sediakan satu kajian
kes. Berikut ialah satu contoh kajian kes yang menggambarkan prinsip
beneficence:

Universiti dengan masalah kecelaruan makanan. Tiada seorang pun
staf dalam Pusat Kaunseling itu yang pakar dalam bidang ini.
Memandangkan klien amat memerlukan bantuan perkhidmatan
kaunseling, beliau telah diminta untuk berjumpa dengan seorang
kaunselor wanita. Kaunselor tersebut menyedari beliau kekurangan
pengetahuan dan kemahiran untuk menangani isu klien. Oleh itu,
kaunselor tersebut telah memohon bantuan dan penyeliaan seorang
pengamal kaunselor persendirian yang memang mahir dalam bidang
kecelaruan pemakanan. Adakah kaunselor telah bertindak untuk
kebaikan diri klien?

Ya. Senario ini mengambarkan prinsip beneficence. Kaunselor

diperlukan untuk memiliki tahap kompetensi dari segi pengetahuan
dan kemahiran untuk menangani isu-isu klien. Apabila tiada seorang
pun dalam agensi yang layak untuk memberi perkhidmatan kepada
klien, adalah bersesuaian dan menjadi etika untuk kaunselor tersebut
mendapat khidmat dan penyeliaan kaunselor lain yang berkelayakan.
