QUICK GUIDE TO BONSAI TOOLS
Branch cutters remove branches almost flush to the trunk. Narrow branch cutters are ideal for
confined areas or shohin sized trees.
Branch jack and bender tools make it possible to make controlled and tight bends. Sometimes a
trunk splitter is used to facilitate by splitting the branch or trunk.
Knob cutters are essentially gouges which remove wood. The concave cutter combines the cutting
actions of the branch and knob cutters. With root cutters you can cut thick roots and branch stubs.
General-purpose bonsai scissors are durable and thus useful for a wide variety of cuts both of
branches and roots. Trimming scissors are more delicate allowing the tool to be used in tighter
canopies and for delicate work such as bud trimming. When spring loaded, multiple cuts are effortless.
Various shapes of tweezers are available and are often combination tools. Useful for weeding, removing
leaves or debris from crevices and more. Specialist designs such as those intended for needle plucking
have deeper teeth that allow you to keep plucking longer despite resin deposits.
Rakes in various designs are essential when repotting, used to comb out roots and eliminate old
growing media. Some have a rubber coating making them less likely to slip when in use.
Wire cutters should have a rounded cutting front, unlike DIY electrical cutters. This reduces the risk of
damaging branches when cutting wire from it. Some are designed for aluminium, copper wire or both,
with thickness limitations. Be sure to select the appropriate wire cutter or you will damage it.
Pliers for bonsai are fundamentally different to DIY pliers. Long handles permit working in confined
areas, and with a pivot point close to the front of the tool one can grasp tightly. Jin pliers with a slightly
tilted head is ideally shaped to strip off sections of wood when working on jin.
Cutting really large branches or trunks with a medium toothed saw is easy. A fine toothed saw is
best for thinner branches and when working inside the canopy of a tree.
To artificially create deadwood, carving chisels used in the Japanese pull fashion are invaluable. The
Kikuwa jin carving and bark removal tool is a dual purpose tool; for removing bark from live veins on
junipers with the blunt tip, and carving with the opposite, sharp tip. Brushes are used to create texture
on deadwood, to clean shari before treating with lime sulphur and for general cleaning of the tree and
even pot prior to exhibition. They are available in different degress of stiffness to suit the task.
Crean mate easily removes resin from tools simply by rubbing the stone on the surface of the tool. A
premium quality whetstone ensures your tools are sharp, without removing much metal. The Bahco
sharpener restores cutting edges with a swipe or two. When storing or transporting your tools, do so
with them in a tool roll preventing the cutting edges from damaging one another, or cutting you.
Grafting knifes are indispensable for grafting but also for cleaning cuts to promote healing. Made from
high quality metal, they keep their edge after multiple cuts. Narrow grafting knives are best for smaller
trees and branch grafts. Parafilm enhances success as this stretchable film breathes but retains
moisture in the scion. Grafting tacks prevent movement of approach grafts, increasing success.
A sharp and tough repotting sickle makes the impossible task of removing a pot bound tree from a
shaped bonsai pot easy. Those with teeth can cut through roots
that have coiled around and are pressing against the pot wall.
A good set of soil sieves with interchangeable mesh screens
allow you to make your own soil mixes or growing mediums,
tailored to suit the trees you are growing and the stage of
development they’re at.
Soil scoops available in plastic and metal, help reduce
spillage and enable you to pour growing media precisely
where you want it.
Drainage mesh prevents the loss of growing
media through the drainage holes of your pots, and
should be secured with a loop of aluminium wire.

INTRODUCTION TO GROWING MEDIA
This is an area of bonsai cultivation rife with urban legend and in my experience practically every artist
has their own unique mix, which they will claim as the best, and vehemently defend.
It’s neither my intention to persuade you to change from what you are using nor to use a particular
product. However I would like to explain some fundamentals so you may understand the role each
component plays and empower you to mix your own ideal growing medium.
Traditionally there are two components to all growing mediums; organic and inorganic. Organic includes
material that will degrade. Inorganic is a component that does not and retains its structure.
The CEC value of each component refers to how readily it retains and then releases nutrients.
ORGANIC COMPONENTS include mature milled pine bark, peat moss and other such ingredients
largely to aid in moisture retention. How much is used will depend on how often the tree can be
watered. Keeping a tree’s roots wet for extended periods may not only result in root rot but also retarded
growth, as roots need oxygen to grow and if the air pockets are filled with water it is deprived of that
oxygen. If included, organics should be sifted of anything smaller than 2mm as these tend to clog the
mixture.
An international trend is away from organic components in mediums. There are several reasons for this.
Organics can introduce fungal or other diseases and certain insect larva are attracted to the decaying
material and not only eat it but also your tree’s roots. Most organic material degrades over time losing its
structure and becoming finer, impeding drainage and reducing oxygen exchange.
As an alternative use akadama. This natural clay-like mineral from Japan retains water and fertilizer.
Heavier than water it does not float and also changes color helping you water only when necessary.
Peat moss is another alternative as it is considered sterile and does not degrade easily, although it is
generally fine so may impede drainage.
INORGANIC COMPONENTS include pumice, crushed stone, LECA, Groperl and vermiculite help
to maintain structure and do not degrade like organics. Most do not allow root penetration so in effect
reduce the volume of the container that can be utilized by roots.
Some absorb moisture, however generally they are not able to absorb much, so using a very inorganic
mix will require you to water more often. Drier mixes do result in greatly enhanced quantities of fine; hair
roots though and therefore support more ramified trees.
LECA, an acronym for "light expanded clay aggregate" has become very popular, with many leading
local and international artists using it extensively. LECA is fired clay granules. A mix of crushed and
whole particles of 2 – 4mm retains some water, and does not degrade so can be reused repeatedly.
In Japan, the inorganic medium of choice is pumice and it is always used in conjunction with akadama
in different ratios, usually 2 parts akadama to 1 part pumice for deciduous trees and equal parts for
conifers. The surface of pumice is unique in that it is slightly abrasive. Roots seem to ramify quite readily
in mixes containing it. A popular international artist has said that should he only have one medium to
grow trees in, that medium would be 100% pumice.
THE PERFECT MEDIUM FOR ALL
There is no such thing but the ideal one for you does exist. Factors you will need to consider include the
intervals at which you are able to water, your local and even micro-climate, the species you
have in your collection and the stages of their
development. There is no one
medium which works for all species,
for all stages of development and for
all people.
Experiment with ratios of the components
discussed above to see what works best for you and
your lifestyle or start with one of our ready to use mixes.

SELECTING A BONSAI POT
A bonsai cannot properly be appreciated until it is combined with a container. The word bonsai means a
potted plant! When choosing a container, were you to ask several people their choice, you would get as
many answers. It is very much a personal decision. Being aware of the following concepts will aid you in
finding a pleasing combination as the art of bonsai is not only the styling of a tree but also the image of
tree and container combined. In Japanese bonsai the container should never overpower the tree, only
complement the tree.
Its usually better to shop for a container once the tree has attained a certain degree of development as
the "feel" of the tree should be echoed in the container. For example if the tree is powerful a more
masculine or heavier pot can be used. Feminine trees should be combined with lighter more delicate
bonsai pots. The width and length of the tree’s branches are as important as the height and thickness of
the trunk. The color of the flowers, fruit and bark as well as the leaves all play a role.
Lastly, aesthetic considerations aside, the size and depth of the pot may be influenced by the
horticultural requirements of the species. Some species rapidly consume moisture therefore require a
larger container. Some require better drainage and therefore deeper pots.
SIZE - There are two ways in which the length of the container can be determined. The first method is
that if the tree's height is greater than its width, then the length of the container should be around 2/3 to
3/4 of the height of the tree. If the width of the tree is greater than the height, then the container should
be 2/3 to 3/4 of the width of the tree. Usually the depth of the container should be roughly equivalent to
the diameter of the base of the trunk. However this suggestion is certainly not going to work for younger
developing trees, or trees with a more slender trunk. Therefore this and the preceding guideline should
not be strictly applied, and a developed ‘eye’ becomes the deciding factor.
SHAPES - Aside from the influence of color and the basic essence of the tree in the selection of a
suitable container, containers themselves might be active or passive in what they contribute to the
overall feeling of the composition. There is a characteristic, however subtle or challenging it may be to
define, that containers add to the composition. Strong trees have a strong, wide trunk, strong angular
branches, heavily textured bark and finally a mature, surface root system. A feminine tree is the exact
opposite, so a slender trunk with flowing branches and younger bark or bark that is of a juvenile color.
Selecting a pot that is appropriate will enhance these characteristics, but selecting an inappropriate pot
creates visual confusion.
DECORATIVE FEATURES - These too influence the way we perceive the tree. For instance stepped feet
provide a sense of stability and add a little interest to the tree. Side panels add interest to the
composition of pot and tree and work best with strong, more formal trees.
UNGLAZED POTS - With conifers, unglazed pots are generally used although they can sometimes be
used with deciduous trees too. Unglazed pots can be found in different color hues of clay. It is best to
choose one that harmonizes well with for instance the bark or leaf color.
GLAZED POTS - SELECTING A GLAZE COLOUR - When choosing a pot of a certain color, usually one
takes into consideration the feature of the tree you wish to enhance and then select a
complementary color to that feature. It is not uncommon for a tree that is to be
exhibited to be repotted into a container that will enhance the most
attractive feature of the tree at that time.
To help you choose the right color it is necessary
to have a little understanding of colors and their
relationships with one another. The easiest visual
tool with which to do this is a color wheel.
For example if you have a white flowering tree, a
dark or black pot will contrast best and enhance the flowers.
