QUESTION:

Do WE want OUR infrastructure running
ahead of growth and demand, or
constantly in deficit mode where we are
always behind and catching up.

What is the Southern Airport Line?
• Rapid Transit from Auckland Airport to Botany via Puhinui Station
and Manukau City Centre

Length:
• Total: 18.5km
• Airport to Manukau: ~9.5km

Benefits:
• 35mins from Botany to the Airport
• 35mins from Papakura to the Airport via Puhinui Interchange
• ~35mins from Papakura to Botany or East Tamaki heavy industrial complex
• ~45 mins from Britomart to Airport via
Puhinui and SAirL
• Currently 70mins from Papakura to the
Airport by car on a Friday or Monday

Capacity:
• Bus: 72 passengers every 10 minutes =
432 passengers (pax) an hour
• Light Rail: 422 pax every 10 minutes =
2,532 passengers every hour (5,064 @ 5mins)
• Southern Line: 750 pax every 10 minutes =
4,500 pax/hour (doubles between Puhinui
and Otahuhu as Eastern Line also runs through)

Transit Orientated Developments
& Widening the Catchment

• 800 metre walk up catchment (with 200m and 400m
radii also included)
• Catchment extended with e-bikes and feeder busses
• TODs within the 800m catchments

Cost
Using $75m/km figure given geography:

• Total: $1.388 billion
• Airport to Manukau City Centre only: $712m
Note: probably lower given most of the route is blank land
or has wide green medians

Timeframe from construction to operation:
• If we start now: 2018-2021/22 for Airport to Botany,
2023/24 – so by the time the City Rail Link opens and both heavy rail
frequencies and patronage increase significantly again

Southern Airport Line is designed to be run every 10 minutes all day every single
day with five minute frequencies in key peak periods
