ISTEP+ Part 1
Beginning Tuesday,
February 27, our students
will be taking the ISTEP+
Part 1. Our testing will
take place for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade
students on Tuesday & Wednesday,
February 27 and 28. 6th and 7th grade
students will also be testing on Thursday,
March 1.
Please schedule all appointments around
these dates and be sure that your child
arrives to school on time.
School in session Feb. 19 & June 1
Due to the weather related school closures
on January 12 and 24, school WILL now be in
session on the Presidents’ Day/Flex Day,
February 19, and also the Flex Day on June 1.

night of basketball tricks, hoops, and alley
oops that the entire family will enjoy.

Quarter 3 Exploring Music classes
Exploring Music classes will be performing
all day in the LGI room on Monday, March
12. 8th grade will play guitars at 7:35 am
and 8:20 am. 7th grade will play
xylophones
aaaaaa at 9:45 am and 10:35 am. 6th
grade will play World Music Drums
at 12:30 pm and 1:15 pm. Come hear
what students accomplished this quarter!
School dances February 9 and March 9
Our student council is sponsoring a dance and
recreation night for NEMS 6th and 7th grade
students who purchased tickets on Friday, February
9 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. There are a few tickets left
that may be purchased for $3 during SLT from 8th grade teacher,
Mrs. Noble, in room 1326. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door.
Dress is casual and the school dress code must be followed.
Concessions will be available for a small fee that night.
We are planning a combined dance to include 8th grade students
from both East and West middle schools on March 9. More
details to follow!
Band, Choir, and Orchestra Sign-ups for 2018-19
Now is the time to sign-up for Band, Choir, and Orchestra classes
for the 2018-19 school year. Sign-ups must be completed
by February 16, 2018. Paper forms are available from the
performing arts teachers for those who need them.

Pennies for Patients campaign
The National Junior Honor Society will once again be sponsoring
the NEMS Pennies for Patients fundraiser. Pennies for Patients
funds raised will go towards research for Leukemia and
Lymphoma, and also support local families in their fight against
cancer. Students are encouraged to bring in spare change to help
support this wonderful cause. Students will be notified via the
afternoon announcement when the campaign begins.
Spring sports callouts will take place during SLT on February 26,
and tryouts will be in March. Students will be reminded of both via
the afternoon announcements. Prior to tryouts, athletes must
turn in a hard copy of the IHSAA Physical Form completed by a
licensed physician and dated after April 1, 2017. The remainder of
the required forms must be completed online via the Rank One
Sport system. If your child tried out for a fall or winter sport they
will not need to repeat this process. Click the Athletics Tab on the

School Counselors’ recognition week unit.

Applications were sent to students through Canvas and may also
be found on the NEMS webpage. Paper forms may also be
picked up in our Student Services office. Please note that all
forms must be turned in to the NHS office at by May 1.

Dear NEMS Parents/Guardians:

Today’s middle school students are faced with incredible pressures to be sexually active. Because of these pressures,
as well as the resulting physical, emotional, mental, and social consequences of such activity, our school has chosen
to implement Creating Positive Relationships (CPR) as part of our wellness education curriculum to facilitate sex
education in grades 6-8. The Great Body Shop, our wellness curriculum magazine, is also used in conjunction with
CPR to teach the reproductive systems and life cycle.

This curriculum will provide basic, relevant information about growing up, including male and female anatomy, the
stages of growth from fertilization to birth, and the changes that occur with the onset of puberty. Emotional
maturity is defined, responsible behaviors and relationships are discussed, and the importance of setting personal
and family goals is taught. There is an emphasis on abstinence and forming healthy, positive relationships.

All materials have been carefully screened by staff and are supportive of the Indiana Academic Standards. Our
curriculum also encourages your child to turn to you for further information on these topics, and it is important that
you let your child know you are willing to discuss this material. For your convenience and use, CPR provides
informational web videos for parents at www.cpr4teens.org.

Students enrolled in wellness during Semester 1 already participated in CPR in late November and early December
and will not be participating again. Students enrolled during Semester 2 only will participate in CPR February 26th
through March 2nd. IF YOU PREFER YOUR CHILD BE EXCUSED FROM PARTICIPATION IN THIS PORTION OF THE
WELLNESS EDUCATION CURRICULUM, PLEASE SIGN AND DATE THE BOTTOM PORTION OF THIS LETTER AND
RETURN IT TO YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER BY NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, February 20th , 2018. If you chose this option,
alternative educational experiences aligned with the Indiana Academic Standards will be provided for your child. If
you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s wellness teacher.
