Dear Jonathan Cook,

Tackling Tooting fly-tipping

We welcome your long-awaited initiative, following our Tidy-Up Tooting campaign, to tackle fly-
tipping and littering in our neighbourhood. Residents have told us they feel that Wandsworth Council
have been neglecting one of the most vibrant parts of our Borough. While we welcome these
proposals, we are not convinced they go far enough to tackle this problem at its root.
We need a push on both education and awareness around the problems of fly-tipping and littering. A
high portion of people move in and out of Tooting every year so the Council must provide clear
information to new residents of their waste disposal responsibilities. As many Tooting residents do
not have vehicles, the Council should advertise and simplify the booking system for the disposal of
bulky waste.
Improving the quality and appearance of streets in Tooting would be an important way to encourage
people to properly dispose of their waste. Street cleaners in Tooting perform an invaluable service; by
listening to the workers and paying them the London Living Wage of £10.20 per hour, we can
increase staff retention and create a motivated and more efficient workforce.
The whole community must also be involved, including schools, businesses, sports clubs, and religious
organisations. Whether through awareness on social media or with community litter picks, Tooting
residents can be united in their actions to Tidy-Up Tooting.
We appreciate the measures which you have recently laid out, however, we remain unconvinced it
represents the drastic changes which local residents tell us are required.
Our communities expect improvements to be made as fly-tipping has been a problem for far too long
- enough is enough. Tooting is a brilliant place to live - diverse, exciting and accepting - it’s time we
had streets to match.
Yours sincerely,
