"A Mind Apart is a wonderful book: human, beautiful, and deeply moving." – Kay Redfield Jamison (Author of An Unquiet Mind)
The English Poet Siegfried Sassoon once wrote “uneasy was the man who wandered, brooding, his face a little whiter than the dusk.” It is evident from Sassoon’s writing that there is fragility to the human psyche. The human race encounters extensive levels of pain, misfortune and stress on a daily basis, and the only way for many to salvage their sanity is to channel those distressing thoughts into something else. Over the centuries, many tortured souls have done just that by turning their grief into the some of the most moving, and sometimes disturbing, poetry of their time. From the manic Theodore Roethke to the reclusive Emily Dickinson, the delicate mental state of human life has always been blatant in poetry. In A MIND APART: Poems of Melancholy, Madness, and Addiction, Mark S. Bauer has selected 200 poems from across seven centuries that reflect how poetry and madness are deeply intertwined. A MIND APART is the first anthology of its kind and includes poems by George Herbert, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Sylvia Plath, Jane Kenyon, and of course, Siegfried Sassoon, in order to give readers a broader range of mental states. These mental states include depression, mania and melancholy. In his critical and clinical introduction, Bauer considers mental disorders from multiple perspectives, providing a valuable book for those trying to understand mental illness, as well as those who truly value poetry.
