World Champions

World Championship 2002 was an international basketball competition, which was held in
Indianapolis, USA from 29 August to 8 September 2002, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia won the gold
medal, Argentina won the silver medal, while Germany won the bronze medal. German national team
player Dirk Nowitzki was named the best player of the tournament.

Downtown Indianopolis had the flavor of downtown Belgrade on Sunday with fans celebrating their
country’s victory over Argentina. Yugoslavia win the result 84 – 77 and fifth time won the world
championship.

“The victory is so much sweeter as it was scored in America, the cradle of the basketball,” former
team capitain Aleksandar Djordjevic said. “It’s wonderfull we were able to defend the gold medal and
for the fifth time prove we are champions on the world” said Dejan Bodiroga, who had 27 points. “We
won several of the last games by showing a lot of heart,” Bodiroga saids.

Bodiroga, Pedja Stojakovic, and Vlade Divac stepped up as team leaders and their team was the
favorite again when it eliminated the United States from medal contention with a quarterfinal victory.

“We lost our last game to the greatest team,” said Argentina’s coach.

Hundreds of thousands of of flag-waving and car-honking fans celebrated after the victory over
Argentina on Sunday in an outpouring of patriotic sentiments.

Traffic was paralysed for hours into the dawn throughout the centre of Belgrade as more than
150000 fans screamed in ecstasy, sang, marched and danced through the streets and jumped into
fountains. Police closed off all the streets leding to the city centre.
