TITLE: ____________________________

OBSERVATION: It is observed for two bodies connected to each other. As the mass of body B increases, the
acceleration of body A changes. Plan & design an experiment to investigate the relationship.

HYPOTHESIS: As the mass of body B increases the acceleration of body A increases.

AIM: To determine whether if acceleration of body A increases as the mass of body B increases.

APPARATUS/MATERIALS:

 String
 Pulley
 Retort stand
 Weight of mass 2N, 4N, 5N, 6N, 7N, 8N, 9N and 10N
 Stopwatch

PROCEDURE:

1) Set up apparatus above on a retort stand.

2) Attach a weight of 2N on A and a weight of 4N on B
3) Record the time taken for B to reach to the table top.
4) Use variable masses of 5N, 6N, 7N, 8N, 9N and 10N on B

VARIABLES:

MANIPULATED VARIABLES:

 Change in weight.

CONTROLLED VARIABLES:

 Same weight on body A throughout the experiment

RESPONDING VARIABLES:

 The time taken to stop on the table top

 The acceleration of each block.
THEORY:

Acceleration - Acceleration is a vector quantity that is defined as the rate at which an object changes its
velocity. An object is accelerating if it is changing its velocity.

Using Newton second law: When a force acts on a body the rate of change of momentum is proportional to
the applied force and takes place in the direction in which the force acts.

 F=ma
Where;
F – Force in Newton (N)
m – Mass of the object
a – Acceleration of the object

RESULTS:

MASS ON BODY B / N TIME BODY B TAKEN TO REACH AT REST ACCELERATION OF BODY B /

/s ms-2

Mass of Body A - _______

Acceleration of Body A - _________

TREATMENT OF RESULTS:

1. Draw a graph of amplitude against frequency.

ACCELERATION / ms-2

TIME / s

ANALYSIS OF RESULTS:

From the graph, if the acceleration of the object increases due to time then the hypothesis is true, else of the
acceleration of the object doesn’t increase due to time then the hypothesis is false.

PRECAUTION:

SOURCES OF ERROR:

CONCLUSION:

If the acceleration of the object increases due to time then the aim is true.
