On sites where carbon residues in liquid fuel burners and non return valves have caused problems, it is
recommended that an air purge system modification is fitted,
During normal running on gas the liquid burners are kept 'cool' by continuous gas purging. On turbine
shutdown the gas purge stops flowing by virtue of the gas supply being shut off, and the liquid burners
become hotter in the early shutdown period. This heat will carbonise any traces of fuel remaining in the
liquid burner, and it will form deposits on the burner nozzle.
The modification is to pipe 'instrument' standard air to the liquid burners on shutdown to remove the
last traces of fuel. This air is to be clean and dry at a minimum temperature of 20°C above dewpoint
and set at 80 to 120 psig.
Gas purging of the liquid burners whilst running on gas continues until the turbine stop sequence is
initiated, then (on modified systems! at 8000 rpm falling, the instrument air is electronically switched in
to complete the purge sequence on the liquid burners. This instrument air remains on for 20 minutes or
until the turbine is cool.
ENGINEERING
The modification kit comprises new pipework, filter, solenoid valve, pressure switch, wiring and
software. It comes complete with full instructions. The complete kit required will be engineered by EGT
on customer request. Fuel system drawings will be amended to take into account any changes required
to complete this modification.
