A Day In Your Life at Vineyards

Dear Diary,

With all the shopping, events, work, kids, it’s so nice that home is my sanctuary from everything! Living in Vineyards is the best
decision John and I ever made! Our lanai overlooks the golf course and lakes, where I’m sipping my coffee and thinking about
how much fun we had yesterday, hosting our family for dinner. The club made it so easy and the food was fabulous! Afterward,
the boys took to the links while we girls played some tennis before relaxing by the resort-style pool.

One of the things that I like about Vineyards is that it’s financially stable. That’s very important, especially in today’s economic times.
We looked at so many communities and discovered that Vineyards doesn’t have a Community Development District, or CDD as we
learned. That means as residents, we aren’t paying for things like street lights, landscaping and roads, because the developer,
Vineyards Development Corporation, already paid for these improvements and chose not to pass along the cost to the residents.
Vineyards is privately owned and thanks to smart business decisions, carries no debt. I doubt many communities can make that claim.

Just the other day one of my friends called and told me she and her husband have decided to move to Naples! With 12 new models
in four new neighborhoods, I’m confident she’ll find the perfect place to call home.

She’ll like the maintenance-free lifestyle at Vista Pointe, where she can choose either a two or three-bedroom design with up to
2,245 square feet under air. She’ll love the large balconies, the resort-style pool and community clubhouse in a tropical setting
complete with a waterfall, palm trees, tiki huts, chaise lounges and a separate, oversized spa.

Avellino Isles offers private two-car garages and an elevator. She can choose a two- or three-bedroom design with up to 3,282 square
feet under air. I can just see her enjoying her new lanai with championship golf course views.

We’ll stop at Hammock Isles where she’ll see beautiful villas, single-family and estate homes. She’ll have 12 floor plans from which
to choose, all Tuscan-styled homes with paver brick drives and lakefront fountain views.

Last, but definitely not least, we’ll visit Venezia Grande, where only 24 fortunate homeowners will have the opportunity to purchase
an estate home. She’ll love these spacious four-bedroom homes, with study, that have 4,438 to 5,931 square feet under air.

I just know she’ll love Vineyards as much as we do! Where else can you find 1,375 beautiful acres just east of I-75 and only
minutes from all that makes Naples paradise? We’re so close to all the best shopping, dining, arts and entertainment
and the state-of-the-art Physicians Regional Medical Center. She can visit her grandchildren at Vineyards Elementary School
and take them to the Vineyards Community Park.

As a member of Vineyards Country Club, she’ll love our 70,000 square-foot clubhouse with a great pro shop, the
fully-equipped and staffed fitness center, the fine dining, the lounge and the banquet facilities. Her husband will love the
36 holes of PGA championship golf while we enjoy the resort-style pool, the 12 lighted Har-Tru tennis courts, the pro
shops and being part of one of the most active tennis programs in the county. And they can get a full golf membership
when they purchase their new home.

Well, that’s all for today! Now it’s time to join my husband for lunch at the club!

The Vineyards Corporate Center, which houses its sales offices, is located at 75 Vineyards Blvd.,
east of I-75 off Pine Ridge Road. For more information, please call 239-353-1920 or 800-749-1501.

Design Trends
Its All About You
If there is one irrefutable truth about interior design, it is this: your home is uniquely and
distinctly yours. Its colors, textures, furnishings, features and finishes speak to who you are
and what you hold as beautiful, valuable and important. Taken in sum, they define a style
that is all your own.

That said, whether you are planning on remodeling or building something new, taking
the latest interior design trends into consideration can be instructive. Every generation of
designers introduces new trends, some of which become so popular they ultimately become
a component of style. So what trends will we see in 2011?

Overall, the most heartwarming aspect of design trends in 2011 is a renewed focus on the
family and preserving the past. The recession and global events have prompted a turn inward
and a desire for simplicity. A “less is more” approach will create that simplicity without losing
any of the glamour. This is the year to mix and match textures, styles and colors to create
unique spaces that truly reflect who you are. Feel free to pay homage to the past by using
distressed wood finishes and to pare down the traditional by choosing textured natural fabrics
that are casual and less complex. Knitted, woven and even hand-spun surface textures will
help satisfy a craving for comfort. For the more bold at heart, rugs, curtains and pillows with
paisley, geometric or botanical prints will speak to their adventuresome spirit.

If it sounds like interior design is trending toward an “anything goes” approach, that’s just
about right. Tradition is being turned on its head as stylized ethnic influences merge as

never before to present distinctive fabrics,
patterns and prints. In 2011, it will be all about
how disparate elements are mixed and how
what doesn’t fit is made to fit. Found objects,
vintage furnishings and antiques will take
on new importance as designers revel in the
opportunity to combine pieces from different
eras and styles in spaces that will serve as
comfortable retreats.

That sensation of contentment and coziness

will be enhanced even further by displaying
the natural patina of woods, metals and other
materials. Our appreciation for one-of-a-kind
decor and artisan pieces will increase markedly.
Historical pieces that seem to have outlived
their usefulness will be re-interpreted and
given a new twist. Incorporating both scenic
views and more natural light will receive even
greater emphasis in design schemes. A greater
sense of intimacy will be achieved through the

use of layered flooring and the resurgence of wallpaper. Overlapping several
lightweight rugs with complimentary colors and similar patterns will add
richness and warmth while traditional wallpaper design patterns in updated
color combinations will bring greater visual interest.

What about color in 2011? In keeping with the movement toward spaces
that more accurately reflect individual personalities, color trends for the new
year offer unprecedented freedom and creative opportunity. Because more

of us are choosing to stay put rather than moving, the emphasis will be on personal
enjoyment rather than on what buyers might prefer. This is the time to feel free to
choose whatever color scheme brings comfort to you and yours, even if you prefer
using vibrant colors throughout the home. Cool neutrals and muted hues from icy
grays to chocolate browns, bright reds, sapphire blues, tangerine, magenta, fuchsia,
teal, purples and even pinks are all open season in the year of anything goes. Color
can be incorporated in lamps, pillows, flowers, vases and other accessories if you
prefer to use neutral wall colors. Your personalized design style is what matters most
and the possibilities are endless. continued on page 282

Must-See Community

Lely Resort, which has long renowned for its world-class lifestyle
and exquisite residences, is about to get even better in 2011.

Stock Development has sent a buzz through the Naples real

estate market with the release of “Lakoya”, the largest remaining
parcel within Lely Resort and the first major project to come on
the market in Naples since 2006.

Meticulously planned, Lakoya offers unmatched style and

sophistication. The exclusive 242-acre enclave has a private
gated entrance, sculptured landscaping, classical gardens,
spectacularly choreographed fountains and elegant paved
walking paths. Initial plans call for 10 new furnished models and
22 new floor plans in five series of floorplans ranging from 1,809
square feet to more than 3,400 square feet -- all with the highest
standard features package ever offered from Stock Construction,
the 2009 Collier Building Industry Association Builder of the Year
and Stock Development, the 2010 Developer of the Year.

“The time is right to bring Lakoya to the market. We are seeing an

increased demand for single-family homes in highly amenitized
properties,” said Brian Stock, CEO of Stock Development. “This
is an extraordinary property and the last of its scope with this fine
of a location.”

Every detail of the Lakoya neighborhood has been carefully

designed for maximum beauty and curb appeal. The gated
entrance will feature elaborately sculpted landscaping, spectacular
water features and dramatic gas lanterns.

Lakoya is surrounded by subtropical woodlands and The Classics

18-hole championship course, which features gentle undulations
and tree-lined fairways. An elaborate series of lakes have been
crafted throughout the neighborhood, giving the homes a
spectacular array of water, golf course and nature preserve views.

Enhancing Lakoya’s natural serenity are several passive parks

featuring elegant paver sidewalks and stone arches leading
residents past exquisite landscaping and soothing water features.

“Lakoya has been designed to blend seamlessly from the

entrance through the boulevards, to the individual homes,” said
Claudine Léger-Wetzel, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for
Stock Development. “No detail was too small for consideration.”

“Stock Construction has taken its most successful Lely Resort

floorplans and redesigned them for Lakoya,” said Léger-Wetzel.

Bay Home
With its unique design and sweeping views, this stunning residence was
constructed as a true collaboration between homeowner, architect, builder
and interior designer. Nestled as it is between a lagoon and the Imperial River
in Bonita Bay, the home presented environmental challenges, while the plans
for the residence were years in the making.

Nationally renown home plan expert Dan Sater, of the Sater Group, began
working with the homeowner, Henry Fischer, soon after the property had
been purchased several years ago. Fischer, CEO of Fischer Homes, a nationally
recognized home builder, wanted the residence to be distinctive, while also
being on a scale intimate enough for casual living and warm hospitality, a
sentiment evident in the pineapple finials placed atop the copper roof.

Once the plans had been decided upon, Mitch Melheim, of Randall Mitchell
Custom Homes, began construction. Working with a client who was a builder
himself could have led to tension, but instead Melheim looked upon Fischer
as a mentor and feels privileged to have earned the confidence of his client.
The focus of Randall Mitchell Custom Homes is to build “smart” custom homes
with an emphasis on quality. With this mutual goal in mind, construction
began.

Because land setbacks presented restrictions, the focus was placed on using
every inch of the building envelope to construct the 5,500 square foot home
that offers breathtaking views from its many balconies. Since the residence
has West Indian influences, wood accents were used throughout, including
Australian cypress floors in the main living areas. The vaulted ceilings were
accentuated by hand crafted Alder ceiling beams sourced from an Amish
company in Illinois, then cut and hand fit on-site.

With its front elevation reflecting in the surrounding water, this Bonita
Bay residence shows off it unique design and wealth of architectural
details.

Home & Design 57

Lot setbacks, environmental restrictions and the fact that the home was built
on pilings meant that the main living areas of the home had to be placed
on the second floor of the residence. Maximizing what others might see as
a disadvantage, the team created an entry foyer on the first floor. With its
limestone floors and elegant mahogany entry door, the space works as a
reception hall, while this level also offers access to the garage and storage
areas. The main living area above can be reached by a staircase or by the
unique elevator it encircles. With its iron grill work, knotty alder doors and
large windows, guests are treated to sweeping views towards the front of the
home as they ascend.

Interior designer Susan Muller, worked closely with Mr. and Mrs. Fischer in
order to realize a home that would embrace West Indian influences, offer the
homeowners a resort-like elegance and provide a warm welcome to guests
and extended family members.

storage areas.

Comfortable elegance was key in the Great Room, where the focal points are
the vaulted ceiling and alder beams. Playing off this, Muller used furniture
with wood accents and introduced comfort by using a cream colored chenille
fabric on the sofas and a trellis patterned fabric on the chair. A leather recliner
offers a view of the custom maple built-in entertainment cabinet and a pair of
the clients’ antique juice presses, in the shape of horses, grace the coffee table.

The dining room capitalizes upon the stunning water views seen through
the mitered glass windows. The generous millwork was painted a crisp
white to contrast with the kiwi green wall color. Tangerine accents were
used for emphasis, as seen in the fabric on the dining chairs. Artwork with a
tropical theme adds richness, while the dining table extends to seat ten when
entertaining.

In the kitchen, the liberal use of alder wood on the ceiling beams and cabinets
lends the space a warm and inviting feeling. A range hood of alder and
hammered copper compliments the space and the painted, tumbled stone
back splash has been done in lime green and terracotta. Recessed lighting
bathes the kitchen in ambient light, while the pendant lamps in a bronze finish
add drama. The adjacent pantry offers additional storage and seating at the

The spacious master bedroom is crowned by a double step ceiling, while

oversized windows offer uninterrupted views. As always, the construction
and design team were determined to create a space that would draw the
outdoors into the living spaces. The window treatments were kept simple by
using an elegant fabric valance, calling upon white millwork to emphasize
the proportions of the room. The striking rosewood poster bed holds pride of
place in the room, which also includes burl wood nightstands. The watercolor
artwork was sourced by Muller and the clients at a local art show.

64 Home & Design
One of greatest design and construction challenges presented to the team by
the project was the pool area. While the plans for the home went through
various stages, building codes pertaining to the property had changed. By
the time building began, it transpired that the pool would either have to be
built at grade level – away from the outdoor living areas – or it would have to
be angled to adhere to the confines of the setback. The team chose to keep
the pool on the main living level, which meant that it had to be constructed
on pilings. All of the structural work on the negative edge pool was done by
Pinnacle Pool before construction began on the home. The end result is a truly
one-of-a-kind pool with dramatic angular lines that appears to hang in midair.
Water flows over the infinity edge and cascades into a collection pool, while
swimmers are treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding sky, trees and
water.

Planning restrictions were turned into a plus by the team, with the
result being a dramatic, negative edge swimming pool that appears
to hang in midair. Swimmers are treated to breathtaking views of the
surrounding sky, trees and water.

Home & Design 65

The Fischer home stands as a stunning example of what can be achieved
through teamwork and is impressive for both its design and its ability to suit
its natural environment. By working to maximize the available construction
footprint and exercising ecological awareness through the use of green
building materials and minimal material waste, Randall Mitchell Custom Homes
has created a singular residence that meets all of the needs and desires of its
owners. When asked what aspect of the project he was proudest of achieving
along with his builder client, Melheim said simply, “mutual respect.”

The moment one enters the Calascio’s foyer through double mahogany doors
with decorative ironwork, the home commands attention. Numerous Harwick
signature features are set in a California Wine Country themed interior designed
by Collins & DuPont Interior Design. Natural light, gorgeous views and details
that lure visitors from one area of the home to the next are found throughout.

without being overpowering, the 4,964 square feet Calascio model

The living room provides a gracious introduction to the Calascio.
The space features a wall with three soaring arched windows that
provide a see-through look at the spacious outdoor living area, spa
and pool and Estuary’s award-winning golf course. This stunning
window treatment is a Harwick signature. It is in keeping with what
Florida is about - the outdoors, sunshine, blue skies and water.
There are no heavy draperies to impede the view. Another Harwick
signature is the exquisite molding detail that encases the window
and transforms it into a work of art. An angled tray ceiling treatment
has been executed with dry wall to provide an adaptation of a
heavy timbered beam supported by corbels. The furnishings are
transitional and include two Maitland-Smith replica chairs that are
artsy and fun. A mission style fireplace has a beautiful wood mantle.

“When we design our homes, we work with the architect to

establish an axis point from which architectural features draw you
to the next room - that place where you first stand after entering,”
said Harwick Homes Vice President Mark Smith.  “When you enter
the Calascio, you see a dramatic view through the highly detailed
living room windows. From this point, you are drawn out to the
pool and the amazing view beyond. To your right is the Master suite
with an arched window looking out to a flowering tree. To the left,
the gallery forms a view corridor leading to the dining room with
beautiful windows and another view beyond. Along the journey
to the dining room, you are further enticed to take in the views
through the family room, kitchen and breakfast nook out to an
expansive outdoor living area, pool and fireplace. These details and
views establish and maintain the flow of the home.”

The Calascio’s spacious kitchen, breakfast area and joining family
room share a large space that conveys the Wine Country feeling.
The kitchen ceiling is a dry wall coffered ceiling with lineal timbered
beams. Cabinetry painted in a light tone that closely matches the wall
color contributes to the sense of space. A window is set over the
stove to provide natural light. The kitchen is ideally suited to dinner
gatherings. Generous counters, an island and a long peninsula offer
segregated work space to allow food preparation and socialization in
comfort. The peninsula is located adjacent to a wine area and bar that
is part of the kitchen. Pecan finished cabinetry with decorative opaque
glass fronts are featured above the bar.

Heavy timbered beams are set on the family room ceiling. The room’s
color tones are a relatively neutral camel and sage-green accented by
the corals, oranges and teals of a soft, cotton Schumacher tapestry
on two comfortable side chairs. Arched openings on either side of a
built-in lead to the living room. The tall built-in houses a television
and features various niches for accessories and home theater speakers.
The built-in has a comfortable design that works beautifully with the
scale of the space. Its mission style feeling is consistent with the Wine
Country theme of the home. Tile insets have been placed across the

marvelous cooking experience! The kitchen, breakfast area and family
room open to an outdoor living area measuring over 1,200 square feet
that includes a fully equipped kitchen and two seating areas furnished
with outdoor wicker. A fireplace provides a wonderful gathering spot
for conversation and enjoying the expansive golf course view. An
intimate pergola with chaise lounges is positioned on the opposite
side of the pool immediately adjacent to the master bedroom.

The intricate, three layer coffered ceiling catches the eye upon entering
the master bedroom. The king-size bed and nightstands are set in a
niche that compliments the ceiling. Furnishings throughout the room
are transitional. The neo-classic bed, Regency leather chair and dark-
toned nightstands play well against the camel colored walls. Sliders
provide access to the pergola outdoors.

The Calascio’s kitchen is ideally suited to dinner gatherings

involving guests who bring something to contribute to the
meal. Generous counters, an island and a long peninsula offer
plentiful work space for food preparation and socializing.

“The Calascio residence at Estuary at Grey Oaks is another Harwick
Homes masterpiece,” said Todd Kendall of The Lutgert Companies. “The
beautiful floor plan is designed to blur the lines between indoors and
outdoors. The transition from one space to the other is seamless. A large
outdoor living and grill area are perfectly suited to the Estuary lifestyle
and offer fabulous views of Estuary’s award-winning golf course.” The
Calascio is offered by Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, a division
of The Lutgert Companies.

“At Harwick Homes, we have found that today’s luxury home buyer
is most interested in value, classic elegance and livability,” said Mark
Smith. “The desire for the more complex, elaborate homes that were
built throughout Southwest Florida in the recent past has diminished
to a degree for a large segment of the market. With the Calascio, our
intention was to build a home with Mediterranean characteristics and
elegant features and finishes at a reasonable price point for the Estuary
community. It has been built to Harwick’s long standing and quality driven
specifications, including all concrete, sealed envelope construction. It is
an ideal home for those intent on enjoying both the casual elegance and
charm of Southwest Florida’s indoor/outdoor lifestyle and the prestige of
Estuary at Grey Oaks. This is a home to be enjoyed.”

Quail West
Where Excellence Has an Address
A canopy formed by the tall trees lining the approach to Quail West provides the first hint
of the community’s retreat-like ambiance. Once through the gated entry, the elegance
of the place is unmistakable. Breathtaking vistas as varied as the custom-designed
manor homes situated on exquisite cobblestone parkways, original stands of towering
trees, the emerald green fairways of two championship golf courses and glistening lakes
gracefully merge to convey a sense of peace that belies the community’s proximity to
Southwest Florida’s stunning beaches, sumptuous dining and world-class shopping.
This is a private, 1,180 acre oasis - a haven discreetly set apart from the stresses of
everyday life.

The Club at Quail West epitomizes the refined lifestyle of the community. The
member-controlled, debt-free Club is vibrant with life and activity. With soaring
ceilings, handsome furnishings and comfortable spaces, the 70,000 square-foot
Grand Clubhouse offers members a place to relax and create memories with family
and friends.

Many of those memories are made on the Club’s two championship golf courses
designed by the renowned Arthur Hills. The Preserve Course plays to 6,841 yards
from the back tees and takes the golfer on a journey through lush, woodland areas,
while the 7,041 yard Lakes Course offers wide-open vistas across shimmering lakes.
One of Southwest Florida’s most exclusive golf clubs, Quail West’s courses and
facilities are shared by only 600 members.

Quail West’s world-class spa and beauty salon offers a comprehensive array of hair
design, skin care and nail services, as well as an assortment of therapeutic massage
treatments. In addition to a complete line of weight and cardio equipment, the fitness
center’s on-site trainers lead a variety of classes, including Pilates, water aerobics
in a lagoon-style solarium pool, cycling and cardio kick boxing. Tennis enthusiasts
enjoy eight lighted red-clay, hydro tennis courts. The community also offers right
to use access at the newly renovated Club at Barefoot Beach and its new dining
facilities through the “Quail on the Beach Club.” This innovative relationship is a fiscally
responsible approach to beach club membership.

The golden hour and evening atmosphere at Quail West define excellence. Whether
enjoying the 19th Hole Sunset Bar, savoring a delectable vintage in the Club’s
spectacular Wine Grotto, or enjoying the sumptuous cuisine at the elegant Mahogany
Room or the more casual Cypress Grille, there is a setting for any preference. A

Kingon Homes is a family run company, where clients receive personal
attention and the individual expertise of the principals, each of whom place
their own mark of distinction upon the custom homes they build, such as
the Royal Floridian model home located in the Celebrita neighborhood at
Mediterra.

boasting over 5,000 square feet of living area and a three car garage.
Exceptional architectural detailing throughout the four-bedroom, four-and-
one-half-bath model includes custom arches and groined vaulted ceilings. The
casually elegant one-story luxury home evokes an old-world feel through the
use of rounded corners, light rustic stucco finish and wood trims. Exterior
architectural features include keystone columns, a portico entry with a
beamed, coffered ceiling, a covered front verandah, arched double mahogany
entry doors and garden with an oversized urn fountain.

A rich palette of varying shades of green and
gold was used throughout the interior of the
residence and punctuated with soft terracotta
accents. The formal living room is redolent
with architectural interest, including the Tuscan
fireplace, chiseled-edge travertine flooring, faux-
finished wall niches and a circular beam ceiling.
The rounded arms on the facing sofas and a
circular, marble topped coffee table tie in with
the architectural arches and the circular ceiling
to make an elegant design statement. The space
is anchored by an oriental area rug and the three
large, arched windows draw the eye outdoors to
the stunning infinity-edge swimming pool.

The gourmet kitchen was positioned in order to

take advantage of the lush views to the front and
rear of the residence and offers every amenity
the chef might require. The mocha-stained,
brown-glazed cherry cabinetry provides a
wealth of storage while concealing dual SubZero
refrigerators. Chiseled travertine and glass tile
accents were used on the custom range hood
and backsplash in order to complement the
cactus green granite countertops. The extra large
center island provides seating as well as a work
area. The kitchen also features cypress beams
at the ceiling and hardwood floors. Additional
appliances include four freezer drawers, two
paneled dishwashers, a warming drawer and a
six-burner, stainless steel gas cooktop. A unique,
wrought iron chandelier above the island finishes
the warm, Tuscan feel of the kitchen – a space
that allows for both state-of-the-art preparation
and gracious entertaining.

space enough for the entire family to gather. Entertaining guests is made easy

vanities feature carved Carrara marble tops that are enhanced by the Venetian
faux plaster used throughout the space. A curved wall separates the walk-in

elegant appointments, the master bath is spacious, warm and elegant.

include a kitchen, solana and pool area, all of which have sand-set marble
paver floors. Wood accents are carried throughout the interior, including

ambiance is provided by a stone fireplace, architectural keystone columns and

Palermo Penthouse
Situated in the prestigious Colony Golf & Bay Club community in Bonita
Springs, Florida, The Palermo is an elegant luxury tower designed to
maximize the joy of coastal living. The Palermo’s 7,100 square foot
penthouse residence offers magnificent panoramic views of the inter-
coastal waterways of the Gulf of Mexico. Kira Krümm Interior Design
was engaged to transform this spectacular penthouse space into a
tranquil haven that radiates sophisticated simplicity.

The penthouse’s original design reflected the client’s previous lifestyle

and home in Texas. Although the husband seemed quite comfortable in
these surroundings, the wife desired an interior that was a reflection of
their new life together in Southwest Florida. She wanted to strip away
the ornamentation and traditional feel of their previous style and create
an environment that was more chic, contemporary and new.

Kira Krümm Interior Design was asked to work with existing prominent
features such as the stair rail, fireplace, millwork, doors and flooring, all
of which would be modified to suit the new design concept. Existing
traditional backgrounds required updating. The initial concept evolved
into a transitional style that would be elegant while radiating the
serenity of coastal living.

“Balance and harmony were my goal,” said Kira Krümm. “We

approached the backgrounds in neutrals and introduced color and
texture in accents. We also chose to depict light subtle tones and
recommended a calming peaceful palette to exude elegance and not to
distract from the incredible views of the Gulf.”

As the clients continued to reside in the space during the extensive

renovation, many of the existing furnishings and much of the décor
were replaced with stylish new designs. When completed, both the
husband and wife were thrilled with their spectacular new interior.
With its luminous and soothing neutral color palette and modern design
details, the Palermo penthouse now conveys coastal sophistication. A
unique contrast of neutral yet luxurious textures and materials, such as
crystal, leather, stone, driftwood and linen, combine to add to the space’s
opulent appeal. These natural hues and materials are complemented

by vivid blues and golds introduced in the large contemporary paintings and décor
accents. Rich creams and plush fabrics, splashes of deep blue and silver, and radiant
accessories enhance the elegant allure of the Palermo penthouse. The renovated space
exudes Florida’s tropical appeal and epitomizes the Kira Krümm aesthetic.

“I recognize a movement towards simplicity and seek a clean look that is void of clutter
and ornamentation,” Krümm states. “People are looking at their homes as sanctuaries,
not showplaces and are realizing how greatly our interior environments impact our
quality of life.”

The Palermo penthouse’s grand salon radiates the chic and inviting ambiance the
clients desired. In the grand salon, traditional elements of the fireplace, such as
Corinthian capitals, the keystone pediment and fluted columns, were dismantled and
replaced with cleaner details. Mirrored walls were added to flank the fireplace and
accentuate the impressive scale of the salon while adding depth and dimension to
the space. Cathedral ceilings and a reflective backdrop enhance the salon’s grand
scale. Sumptuous creams, rich fabrics, deep blue and silver accents, and dazzling
accessories all speak to a level of luxurious comfort that is the essence of sophistication.
Transitional style columns frame the fireplace and accentuate the elegance of the
sitting area. A whimsical crystal chandelier is the focal point of this space and creates
a sense of opulent allure. Striking glass accessories and hand-painted platinum railings
compliment the chandelier. Wing chairs in a creamy leather add a contemporary flair
to the grand salon.

Adjacent to the grand salon, the formal dining area is illuminated by recessed ceiling
lighting and an exquisitely designed crystal chandelier. The glass tabletop is adorned
with exotic, neutral accessories and accompanies eight high back chairs in coordinating
silver and sand-toned fabrics. The artwork introduces a vibrant splash of indigo to
compliment the exterior coastal landscape. Stone travertine floors in a soothing sand
tone highlight the delicate attention to finishes and details that are found throughout
the residence. Saturated in neutral creams with subtle blue accents, the grand salon
and formal dining area speak to a coastal lifestyle that is reserved for those with
discerning sensibilities.

A textured silver-grey sectional sofa accented with coordinating pillows and
a charcoal leather ottoman gives the family room an inviting warmth. Custom
cabinetry in a soft neutral tone frames the entertainment center. Modern
accessories add a stylish flair to the space.

Overlooking Florida’s brilliant coastal landscape, the breakfast area is a chic,

yet casual space to enjoy. A rounded custom designed banquette with cream
fabric and charcoal leather seat frame the view and compliment the black pearl
table top.

retreat. Two chairs in the master sitting room feature stylish curves and a soft, pillow back
in a creamy sheen fabric. A silver-hued geometric pattern on the ottomans accentuates the
elegance of the master bedroom.

“I approach designs artistically and conceptually, considering balance and composition

when making selections,” said Krümm. “As with many of our designs, The Palermo
penthouse reflects the balance of ethereal, coastal elements and urban sophistication with
a strong focus on duality between soft, textured, organic elements and hard, clean lined
architectural materials. As is typically the case, success relied greatly on our relationship
with the client. Trust was built throughout the design process, and a harmonious synergy
developed between our clients and our team as the project evolved. The end result was
worth the time and investment, not only for the aesthetic outcome, but for the strong bond
established while achieving our goals together.”

VisualizE Style
For KVS Interior Design Founder and President Kelli Sultan, ASID, NCIDQ, creating an interior design style
is about merging architectural elements, furnishings, fabrics and accessories from a particular period with
the personal aspirations, likes and dislikes of her clients. She and her cast of award-winning ASID certified
designers at KVS are interested in finding out what their clients are about, what brings them warmth, joy,
pleasure and satisfaction. Above all else, they keep visualizing style through their clients’ eyes.

Sultan’s approach worked perfectly when she created the exquisite interior at a new home in Padova at
Mediterra. Designed by Rich Guzman of RG Designs and built by McGarvey Custom Homes, the home’s
comfortable feeling accommodates a pleasant, open lifestyle. Expansive sight lines, numerous gathering
places and warm, eclectic furnishings and finishes that showcase an extensive art collection combine to create
an ambiance that is irresistible.

DuPont created a frieze in the tall family room at the 13-14 foot height. She also created

DuPont’s client has a penchant for decorative glass. Windows depicting an Italianate landscape
scene are found in the master bath’s walk-in shower. Three marbles are layered on the shower walls
along with a stamped Travertine inset with a tile border. The same marbles are found on a segmented
floor that has a traditional banding and inset. The barreled ceiling in the tub area has a dome on one
end. DuPont created soft gold Venetian plaster walls to compliment the bathroom’s Gialo marble
and lighten the space.

The pool area design by Scott Windham at Windham Studio went through several iterations. The
client decided on a tropical lagoon design with an oasis feeling. Waterfalls, lush landscaping that
includes low date palms and a beach make the pool area a sight for the senses.

The client wanted a calm, relaxing outdoor retreat and the gazebo, cascading waterfalls and pond
provide exactly that. DuPont created a raised gazebo area over the cascades where the grass grows
over the pool at certain places.

Harwick Homes’ legendary attention to detail is found in every room of the Cascada Lione. Notable Harwick
signatures such as fine moulding details, exquisitely executed ceiling treatments and stunning window designs
that offer spectacular views are found throughout the home.

“We were issued a challenge to value engineer the project,” said Mark Smith, Vice President, Harwick Homes.
“We went at that vigorously, particularly with the pond and gazebo. We wanted to work with the architect, the
landscape architect and the interior designer to create what the client wanted. We took their dream and made it
a reality. Sherri DuPont made the client’s existing furniture and the new pieces go together seamlessly.”

“We wanted to make the outdoor area part of the house,” said owner Mary Committe. “The design is very
open and you feel that in virtually every room. A large cage in the back incorporates the outdoors yet maintains
our privacy. We also wanted a Mediterranean feel with stone floors and exterior materials inside the house and
Tuscan colors to convey a sense of warmth and welcome. Collins & DuPont and Harwick got that done for us.”

“Everyone was easy to work with,” said Mary’s husband, Tim. “Sometimes when you’re dealing with builders
and interior designers you get the feeling they think they know best and it needs to be their house. That wasn’t
the case for us. Everyone listened to what we had to say and what we wanted. Collins & DuPont incorporated
our existing furniture, antiques and art and provided professional guidance and expertise that allowed us to
design our own home.”

In the Great Room, Carter’s research into Balinesian structures is
evident in the unique thatched ceiling evocative of native tribal
houses. Installation took over a month and the materials used
included sea grass and Honduran mahogany. The oversized
furniture was custom built for the space and covered in a micro-
fiber fabric for durability. For a touch of whimsy, Carter introduced
the melon color used in the quartz countertops of the adjacent
kitchen in the accent pillows on the couches. While classic in
form, the space invites family relaxation and the porcelain tile
floors were chosen for their look and ease of maintenance. The
abstract paintings on the walls were sourced by the homeowners
on one of their many trips to Bali.

while the Fine Art lamps are metal with a wood finish. “The lines of lamp

slate on walls of the attached bath and gave the porthole window a wood
surround. The suspended vanity allows the eye to keep moving, thus giving
the room a spacious feel.

Simple Life
When homeowner and interior designer Julie Furey first purchased her
waterfront residence in Marco Island, the ranch-style home had her thinking
“tear down.” Originally built in the 1980’s, the Brady Bunch-esque appearance
of the home, with its vaulted ceilings and outdated lines, needed a jolt of
contemporary flair.

Working closely on the project with Mark Cotter, of Cotter Construction and
Jeff Scott of Scott Suarez Architects, Furey soon realized that the house had
sound bones and decided instead to undertake a major remodel. Having done
design work around the country, and keeping her own preferences for a home
in mind, Furey made the savvy decision to capitalize on a growing trend –
smarter, simpler living. According to Furey, today’s homeowners are looking
for practical spaces and functionality. “People are looking to simplify their
lives,” explains Furey. “They want more practical spaces within the home and
they want those spaces to blend with the outdoors.” To that end, instead of
adding more square footage to the home by building vertically, Furey, Scott
and Cotter chose to build the home outwards in order to seamlessly blend the
indoor and outdoor living spaces.

According to Cotter, the budget on the project was divided equally between
construction, landscaping and the dock that was installed at the rear of the
home. Cotter, an ecologically aware builder, researched the materials that
would comprise the home, from the insulation to the AZEK material used on
the dock, making educated decisions along the way.

At the front of the home, Cotter used a step-out at the entry in order to give the
elevation a more contemporary feel. A trellis added at the garage brings visual
interest to the area, softening the hard lines with greenery, and complimenting
the mahogany entrance doors. Mahogany was also chosen for ceiling of the
entry, while Squares Landscaping undertook the installation of lush, mature
plantings. The clean Asian lines of the decorative landscape pots also serve to
give the entrance fresh appeal and draw the eye to the front door.

For the interiors, Furey decided on a palette of various tones of browns and
white in order to compliment the strong lines of the home and chose to accent
the interiors with a theme of water and shells. In the family room, the focus was

placed on the built-in media wall and the furniture was chosen for its clean lines
and modern profiles. To achieve textural contrast, Furey placed a brown shag
area rug with linen details atop the hickory wood floors. The floor screen was
covered in a French Boussac fabric print, while simply elegant sheers were used
at the glass doors that can be used to join the space to the outdoor living areas.
The adjoining dining room was given an instant update with the installation of a
pop-down ceiling that serves to define the space, while mirrors were hung along
the back wall in order to reflect the water views.

Furey’s use of over-sized, contrasting cabinetry and hardware with large,

clean lines instantly brought the once dated kitchen into the present. Chestnut
hardwood floors and a lighted pop–down warm the space, which also features
quartz counter tops and stainless steel appliances. Furey designed the unique
island, which offers both seating and additional storage. A lower prep surface
on one side allows the chef to chat with guests while keeping the work area
out of sight.

Believing that design is all in the details, Furey chose a wooden framed,
upholstered headboard for the master bedroom and used furniture with a
lower profile throughout the rest of the space in order to compliment the large
dimensions of the room. The geometric pop-down at the ceiling features a fan
with modern lines. Splashes of coral red, as used on the accent pillows and in
the lampshade, work well against the room’s neutral palette.

Above—Working from a design palette of brown and white, Furey kept

the look of the family room clean and linear. Simple sheers were used
at the glass doors that join the space to the outdoor living areas so as
not to detract from the stunning views beyond.

Left—A step-out entry, the trellis details, and the clean Asian lines of the
decorative landscape pots all work in harmony to bring a contemporary
feel to the front of the home.

220 Home & Design

Working as a team, Cotter, Furey and Scott decided to completely gut the tired
master bath, keeping only the original floor-to-ceiling window in order to flood
the space with natural light. Oversized mirrors were used to lend contemporary
drama to the space and a dated Roman bath tub was removed and replaced by
a modern walk-in shower. The double vanity that once ran along one wall was

replaced by a pair of separate vanities featuring crisp, white cabinetry. Furey used
melon accents in the space, as seen on the wallpaper covering the feature wall.

Working with a neutral palette, Furey used aqua striped wallpaper as an accent
wall in the first guest bedroom. Shell motifs were used on the Thibaut fabric
on the pillows and chair. In order to maximize floor space, a built-in closet
storage system was installed in lieu of dressers and also serves to conceal a
television. Sheers were hung along the window wall and the placement of a
large mirror on the wall opposite serves to reflect the water views that can be
seen from the balcony.

Furey’s bold use of color gave the guest bath an instant face-lift. On the chocolate
brown accent wall, Furey placed artwork featuring a pink flamingo that serves to
give the room a punch of color, which was carried through to the cornice trim.
The shower boasts a glass surround and the bath tub has a sleek, modern profile.

Because the second guest bedroom had not been blessed with either good

to update and define the space, while water views are reflected in the
mirrors hung on the rear wall. The modern lines of the lighting fixtures

to create visual interest in the twin beds and a statement cornice board at the
window, where dark wood blinds play off the neutral wall color. A marine
theme was used in the space, evident in the artwork and fabrics which feature
fish and other marine life, elements that will appeal to a variety of guests.

Bold, contemporary statements were also introduced in the powder room with
the wallpaper and transitional mirror. The vanity has the appearance of a
furniture piece and the dark wood cabinetry was selected to contrast with the
light green wall paint.

The team vision for a home that would include outdoor living into its floor-
plan was successfully realized at the rear of the residence, which incorporates
three additional living spaces – family room, bar and cooking with dining. The
outdoor areas were designed on varying levels, each with its own purpose,
not only allowing the area to be used for various purposes, but also allowing
the property and the surrounding waterway to be seen from multiple views.

The outdoor family room is the perfect spot for gatherings year round, as

A built-in holds the television, while also offering room for display. Behind
this wall and down one level on the dock, the bar area offers additional
seating. On the main level, Cotter extended the lanai east of the pool area to
include an arbor with outdoor cooking and dining space. Every inch of the
outdoor space was maximized, including the boat dock and kayak launch.
Marco Marine Construction, known for their state-of-the-art procedures and
processes, installed the dock, complete with a viewer box equipped with
green, fluorescent lighting that attracts a host of native marine life.

The pool renovation was relatively simple. “We replaced the original jacuzzi
in the pool with a sun ledge large enough to hold two loungers,” explains
Furey. “It’s a small detail, but it gave the pool an instant update and people
love it.” Completing the renovation, the traditional pool fence was removed
and replaced with lush hedges, lawn and mature trees that flow seamlessly to
the neighboring property.

To say that Cotter, Furey and Scott‘s collaboration on the project was a
success would be an understatement. Furey, as both homeowner and interior

Hello! Do you know about ICAN? Well, we’re the Island Coast AIDS Network (ICAN) and for
twenty-three years we’ve been providing vital support services such as food, transportation,
counseling and much more to over 400 AIDS infected individuals and their families in
Southwest Florida…primarily Lee and Collier Counties.

In 2005 our agency opened the ICAN Junction Thrift Store…as a green way to independently
raise additional money for our client programs. The ICAN Junction is not your normal thrift store…
we don’t handle clothing, shoes and the like. The donations we DO take at ICAN Junction
are saleable home improvement items….doors, kitchen cabinets, furniture, windows,
floor & wall tile, lighting fixtures, large & small appliances, plumbing fixtures, hurricane shutters,
hardware & tools, office equipment and well…you get it, right?
So, if your company has leftover inventory, you’re renovating and have items to donate, you’re
de-cluttering, cleaning out your barn or storage facility….call us! We have a truck and will
gladly pick up your donations.

Since we opened the ICAN Junction in 2004 we have diverted thousands of tons of recyclable goods
from the waste stream, helping our community by keeping it cleaner and repurposing
saleable items. Our community members also benefit because ICAN Junction provides a place
where contractors and Do It Yourselfers can buy new and used home improvement materials at
50-75% off retail…while providing necessary support for our clients!
How great is that?! And you/your company can get a tax deduction on your donation!
Don’t you agree…it’s a vibrant GREEN WIN?!

So, please support ICAN…call us with your donations and tell your friends and
associates about ICAN Junction! Thank you for your help!

The use of integrated kitchen appliances is a new, space saving trend.
Refrigerators have gotten bigger, but they can be virtually invisible thanks to
emerging technologies. Now they can be built into walls, niches and even
drawers. The same is true for stoves and dishwashers. New technologies are
also driving a trend for greater functionality, including embedded electronic
devices and wireless systems. Sleek is in. Countertops, backsplashes and
finishes that are sleek never go out of style. Glass, aluminum or nickel cabinet
doors will be used for more contemporary kitchens. Stainless steel appliances
will continue to look stylish and sophisticated while providing a unified look.
Finally, beautiful and timeless white kitchen cabinets will continue to be a
flexible choice as they make it safe to use brighter colors on the walls.
