Lessons of Love and Wisdom 2

Preface
In the name of Allah,
Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
A lot of people like to talk about love because, even
without realizing it, everyone is attracted to love and in fact
a useful and productive life in this world relies upon the
wonderful power of love.

People have many different views about love and

that’s why so many, especially youngsters and teenagers,
are confused about love. They often ask what love is, and
often they find something that is sad and something painful
in their heart when they talk about love or when they feel
love in their heart. They think that love makes them suffer
or makes them sick.

Actually what they are thinking about love is the

opposite from the truth of love. Love, true love, is beautiful
and makes all of life beautiful, joyful and harmonious.

In order to help in the discovery of the power of

love, these stories offer lessons in learning what love really
is, so that you may enjoy great happiness in your life. With
love, everything will be easier for you. With love, even the
difficulties and problems of life will be easy to solve.
Lessons in wisdom are also offered, because love and
wisdom are like the two wings of a bird--a bird cannot fly
with only one wing.

PART I
LOVE

WHAT IS LOVE
What is “Love” actually? People have many
different explanations and definitions about love,
but often they believe that their feelings of lust
and desire are the feelings of love. Love is
something very miraculous, powerful and
beautiful. When someone is in love, everything
will be wonderful and beautiful for the lover,
even though the longing for the beloved may
seem almost unbearable. The lover sees only the
beauty of the beloved, and that’s why the lover

Lessons of Love and Wisdom 5

always forgives whatever the beloved has done,
even without being asked for forgiveness. The
lover will accept everything patiently because
the lover is happy to see the beloved happy. The
lover considers the desires and needs of the
beloved more important than the lover’s own
desires or needs. Love, real love, brings
unconditional acceptance, forgiveness, unselfish
giving and magnificent beauty into every
moment of life.

Questions

1. Do you feel love in your heart?

2. Do you have love for others?
3. From whom do you receive love
now?
4. Can you tell the difference between
love and lust?
5. Are you ready to give love to
others?

Lessons of Love and Wisdom 6

LOVE LETTER

When someone is in
love, the lover is full
of beautiful words
from the heart. And
that will make the
lover able to write a
wonderful love letter
to express his
feeling. Love can
make someone
become a good
writer, a good poet.
Now try to express
your love by writing a
love letter!
The following love
letter can be used to
help you start to
write the letter. It is
only an example. You
should create your
own letter using the
wonderful love that
fills your heart.

Lessons of Love and Wisdom 7

Dearest(Beloved’s Name):

It is very important for me to express to you how much

you really mean to me. I wish I could do this in person while
holding you in my arms and gazing into your eyes. But since we
are physically separated by miles of emptiness, this expression
must come in the form of letters such as this.

(Beloved’s Name), I know it is difficult for you, as it is

for me, to be separated for so long. Life seems to be full of trials
of this type which test our inner strength, and more importantly,
our devotion and love for one another. After all, it is said that
"True Love" is boundless and immeasurable and overcomes all
forms of adversity. In truth, if it is genuine, it will grow stronger
with each assault upon its existence.

(Beloved’s Name), our love has been assaulted many

times, and I am convinced that it is true because the longer I am
away from you, the greater is my yearning to be with you again.
You are my (enchanted Princess/Charming Prince), and I am
your devoted (consort/Prince/Princess). I cherish any thought of
you, prize any memory of you that rises from the depths of my
mind, and live for the day when our physical separation will no
longer be.

Love always,
(Your Name)

(taken from The Love Letter Gallery)

Until that moment arrives, I send to you across the
Lessons of Love and Wisdom 8
miles, my tender love, my warm embrace, and my most
passionate kiss.
LOVE
TEACHERS
We get our education from many people and in many
places. There are two types of education: formal education
and non-formal education. The formal education is given at
school and the non-formal education is given at home and
other places. Our parents are our teachers because they
educate us at home, and whoever else gives us our
education are also our teachers. So who are your teachers?
They might be parents, teachers at school, neighbors,
sisters, brothers, uncles, aunts, friends, even our enemies
too. We can learn something from everyone, but we must
be careful in getting our education that we only take the
good, right lessons.

What do you
think about
the people in
this picture?

Write your
opinion about
the relationship
between your
teacher and
yourself!
Begin with the
words:
I think
……….

Write and tell about your favorite teacher!

Lessons of Love and Wisdom 9

LOVE
MOTHER

Mother and Daughter Daughter

There are many kinds of relationship in this world

and in these relationships there are many kinds of love
too. The loving relationship between mother and father,
mother and children, father and children, girl and boy,
friends, etc. But the loving relationship between mother
and children is really special in this world.
Mother is the woman that we should respect in
our life because she works hard to help us become good,
successful and loving so that we can have a fulfilling life.
Whatever happens to her, she never cares about herself.
The most important thing to her is that she can make us
happy. She will be able to smile if we can smile, even
though our smile is often not for her.
She never cares about losing her beauty when she
must give a birth. She also never cares of her tiredness
when she must wake up at midnight to give milk when
we are thirsty. She never complains when she carries us
Lessons of Love and Wisdom 10
on her back after we go home from our school and we do
not want to walk. She will be happy if she knows that
we enjoy eating the food that she has prepared, even
though she must wake up early to work in the kitchen.
And when we do not like to eat, she will bribe us
patiently while we are busy playing with our toys. And
when we have or make problems in our school, she will
be involved in our problems too.
So what we can give to her for all that she has
done for us? How is your relationship with your mother
now? Do you often give your smile to her? There is no
greater love that the kind, caring, unselfish love of the
mother.

Now write and tell about the love

between you and your mother!

Lessons of Love and Wisdom 11

LOVE

FRIENDS

There are many kinds of friends, such as classmates,

business friends, roommates, neighbors, pen-pals, etc. How
are the relationships among you and your friends? Are they
as good as the relationships between you and your mother,
father, sisters or brothers? You naturally tend to have strong
relationships in your family because of the blood
connection. Can you love your classmates as much as you
love your sisters or your brothers? Can you love your
neighbors as much as you love your parents or your sisters
or brothers?

Lessons of Love and Wisdom 12

Love should not be given to special people only, it will be
better for us if we can love all people without
discrimination.

“Love your neighbor as you love yourself.”

1. Read the following poem!

2. Tell the meaning of the poem!
3. Express your feeling through your own poem
telling how much you love your friends!

LOVE

The LOVE of ALLAH

We have talked about love for friends, teachers,

mothers, and for every person. How can we truly love
them? How can we have the true feeling of love in our
heart? How can we love someone even though others do
not truly love her or him? Often we do not understand
the reason for the love in our heart. Love is a miracle that
Allah gives to us; and if we can love others truly, it is
a gift that Allah gives to us. How many gifts have we
received from Allah? Many... too many to count. Are
you aware of the gifts that you receive?

Let’s look around us carefully!

Lessons of Love and Wisdom 15

What can you describe about the things
around you? Describe them one by one! How many are
there? Are they yours? To whom do they belong?
Yes, all belong to Allah and He gives everything to us;
He provides all of our needs for living in this world. If
so, why is it necessary for us to be proud of something
that we have done or to feel angry about something that
we don’t have? Don’t you feel ashamed and fear Him if
you do that? He knows
all; all that is outside of
us and also all that is in
our hearts. Allah has
the greatest of wisdom
and knowledge.

It is good for us if we
can be grateful for
everything that we have Crocuta crocuta
so that we can enjoy
our life. Allah loves and rewards those who are always
grateful to Him.

Truly Allah loves us very much, and yet never

asks anything for His love. How about us? Knowing how
much Allah loves us, why don't we start to love Allah
too. To do everything in the right way, we should
do everything for Allah. If we could say “I love You”
every minute, with every breath, how wonderful our life
would be!

1. Describe the classification of some plants!

2. Describe some kinds of jobs!
3. How many kinds of animals do you know? What
are they?
Lessons of Love and Wisdom 16
4. Explain about the characteristics of one animal
that you know well! Why is it created in this
world? What is the relationship with others?
5. Suppose that people cause some of animals to
become extinct in this world, what will happen?
6. What happens if many drivers do not want to do
their jobs anymore? What is the effect of that
action?
7. What will happen if the trees are cut down by
people?
8. What must we do to help maintain the balance of
everything in this world?

Lessons of Love and Wisdom 17

LOVE

ALLAH

The highest and greatest love is

the love for Allah. If we truly love
Allah, we will do everything for
the glory of Allah, not because we
want to be seen by others as good
persons. Realizing that we are His
creations and that He is the
Creator means that He has the power over all His
creations including human beings. So knowing that, we
should respect Allah, obey what Allah commands and
avoid what Allah prohibits.

We must do regular prayers, regular charity, and always

do the right things. So what are the right things? We
must be grateful for all that Allah gives to us. We must
not be jealous or selfish, and we must avoid slander,
stealing, or other such sins. We must be patient and truly
enjoy helping others.

Many people have done regular prayers but they still feel
jealous of others. That means that they still do not love
Allah because people who love Allah will love others
too, they will never be jealous or be subject
to bad behavior such as being selfish, arrogant,
dishonest, irresponsible, etc.

Lessons of Love and Wisdom 18

Allah knows what you hide in your heart regardless of
how you speak and act. If we do the right things, we
will have a wonderful life filled with harmony and peace.
So by loving Allah, we discover true peace and harmony
and we will have happiness in this world and in the
Hereafter.

When something happens to us, let’s try to find what

mistakes we have made that have caused our problems.
Let’s try to find our own mistakes first, not just look
for the other’s mistakes. And then we should try to
improve and ask repentance for what we have done. If
we find others’ mistakes, we must be able to
truly forgive them too. That is the way to create the
harmony and peace in our lives.

We must rise above any feeling of selfishness, pride or

arrogance in ourselves!

Exercises:
1. Write and tell about the five pillars of Islam!
What are they?
2. Write the translation of Surah al Fatihah in
English!
3. Write paragraphs for preaching and do it in
front of your friends!
4. What do you do as proof that you love Allah?

Prayers
After many days of rain, the flood waters began to cover
all of the ground. At first, the water was only ankle deep.
But gradually the flood waters just kept getting deeper
and deeper.

The lady of the house, being deeply religious, would not

leave her home. She said "I am not worried, Allah will
protect me".

Her neighbors all tried to get her to leave and go up to

higher ground with them, but she refused their help and
just said "Allah will protect me."

The rains continued, and soon the flood waters were very
deep, so she went up and sat on the roof of her house.
Someone came along in a boat, and invited her to get into
the boat to escape the rising waters, but she refused. She
said "Allah will protect me".

The rains continued, and the flood waters continued to

rise. The waters were now almost covering the entire
roof, and she could only escape the waters by standing at
the very highest peak of the roof. Miraculously, a
Lessons of Love and Wisdom 20
helicopter came and asked her to get onboard to escape
the rising waters, but again she refused. She told them to
go away, and said "Allah will protect me."

The rains continued all night, and before the light of

morning, the flood
waters swept her off of the roof and she was drowned in
the raging flood waters.

After her death, she found herself before Allah, and she
said "Why didn't you answer my calls to you, my Lord?"

And Allah said to her "First I sent you the neighbors to

take you away, but you refused to listen. Then I sent you
a fisherman in a boat to rescue you, but again you
refused to listen. And finally I sent a helicopter to rescue
you, but again you refused to listen. You drowned
because of your own foolishness."

Questions
1. What do you think of the lady’s action in that
story?
2. What will you do if you have a problem that you
cannot solve?
3. What will you do if there is someone that wants
to help you to solve that problem?
4. How do you know that the help is good for you
and it is the help from Allah?
5. How do you know that the help is not good for
you?
6. Do you always like to be helped by others and
always want to be helped?

HELP
Once upon a time, two brothers, who lived on adjoining
farms, had an argument. It was the first serious rift in 40
years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, labor,
goods, as needed without a conflict. Then the long
collaboration fell apart. It began with a small
misunderstanding and it grew into a major conflict and
finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words,
followed by weeks of silence.

One morning there was a knock on John's door. He

opened it to find a man with a carpenter's tool-box. "I'm
looking for a few days' work," he said. "Perhaps you
would have small jobs here and there I could help with?
Could I help you?" "Yes," said John, the elder brother. "I
do have a job for you."

"Look across the creek at that farm. That's my

neighbor's; in fact, it's my younger brother's. Last week
there was a meadow between us and he took his
bulldozer to the river levee and now there is a creek
between us. Well, he may have done this to spite me, but
I'll do him one better."

"See that pile of lumber by the barn? I want you to build

me a fence—an 8-foot tall fence--so I won't need to see
his place or his face anymore."
The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation.
Show me the nails and post-hole digger and I'll be able to
do a job that pleases you."
Lessons of Love and Wisdom 22
The elder brother had to go to the town; so he helped the
carpenter get the material ready and then he was off for
the day. The carpenter worked hard all that day
measuring, sawing and nailing. About sunset, when the
farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job.

The farmer's eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped. There

was no fence there at all. It was a bridge--a bridge
stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine
piece of work, handrails and all--and the neighbor, his
younger brother, was coming towards him, his hands
outstretched. "You are quite a fellow to build this bridge
after all I've said and done." The two brothers stood at
each end of the bridge and then they met in the middle,
taking each other's hand.

They turned to see the carpenter hoist his tool-belt onto

his shoulder. "No, wait! Stay a few days, I've a lot of
other projects for you," said the elder brother. "I'd love to
stay on," the carpenter said, "but I've many more bridges
to build."

Questions
1. What was the problem of the two brothers?
2. Why did the carpenter build the bridge
instead of a fence?
3. If you are asked to help someone to do
something for him, what will you do? Will you
do what he asks without thinking whether it is
good for others or not?

TRUE WEALTH

One day a
father of a very
wealthy family took
his son on a trip to the
country with the
purpose of showing his
son how the poor
people live so he could
be thankful for his
wealth.

They spent a couple of days and nights on the

farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked

his son, “ How was the trip?” “ It was great, Dad.” “ Did
you see how poor people can be?” the father asked. “Oh
yeah” said the son. “ So what did you learn from the
trip?” asked the father.

The son answered, “I saw that we have one dog

and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the
middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no
end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they
have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard
and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece
of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our
sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve
others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have

walls around our property to protect us, they have friends
to protect them.”

Questions
1. Why did the father take his son on a trip
with him?
2. Did the father succeed in achieving his
purpose?
3. What did the son get from his trip with his
father?

DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY

ITS COVER
A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband dressed
in a homespun threadbare suit stepped off the train in
Boston and walked timidly without an appointment into
the Harvard University President’s outer office.

The secretary could tell in a moment that such

backwoods, country hicks had no business at Harvard
and probably didn’t even deserve to be in Cambridge.

“We want to see the president,” the man said softly.

“He’ll be busy all day,” the secretary snapped.
“We’ll wait,” the lady replied.

For hours the secretary ignored them, hoping that the

couple would finally become discouraged and go away.
They didn’t and the secretary grew frustrated and finally
decided to disturb the president, even though it was a
chore she always regretted. “Maybe if you see them for a
few minutes, they’ll leave,” she said to the president.

He sighed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of his

importance obviously didn’t have the time to spend with
them, but he detested gingham dresses and homespun
suits cluttering up his outer office.
Lessons of Love and Wisdom 26
The president, stern faced and with dignity, strutted
toward the couple.

The lady told him, ”We had a son who attended Harvard
for one year. He loved Harvard. He was happy here. But
about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. My husband
and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere
on campus.”

The president wasn’t touched………He was shocked.

“Madam,” he said, gruffly, “we can’t put up a statue for
every person who attended Harvard and died. If we did,
this place would look like a cemetery,”

“Oh no,” the lady explained quickly. “We don’t want to

erect a statue. We thought we would like to give a
building to Harvard.”

The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham

dress and homespun suit, and then exclaimed, “A
building! Do you have any earthly idea how much a
building costs? We have over seven and a half million
dollars in the physical buildings here at Harvard.”

For a moment the lady was silent.

The president was pleased. Maybe he could get rid of
them now.
The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, “Is that
all it costs to start a university? Why don’t we just start
our own?”
Her husband nodded.

The president’s face wilted in confusion and

bewilderment. Mr. And Mrs. Lelang Stanford got up and

Lessons of Love and Wisdom 27

walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California where
they established the great university that bears their
name, Stanford University, a memorial to a son that
Harvard no longer cared about.

You can easily judge the character of others by how they

treat those who they think can do nothing for them.

Questions
1. What do you think of that president
of Harvard?
2. What do you get from that story?
3. Make a conclusion from that story!
4. Write and tell your own story that
is almost the same as that story!

THE FOX WHO GOT

CAUGHT
IN THE TREE TRUNK

Once upon time, there was a hungry fox that was looking
for something to eat. He was very hungry. No matter
how hard he tried, the fox could not find food. Finally he
went to the edge of the forest and searched there for
food. Suddenly he caught sight of a big tree with a hole
in it.

Inside the hole was a package. The hungry fox

immediately thought that there might be food in it, and
he became very happy. He jumped into the hole and
when he opened the package, he saw there were a lot of
food, bread, meat and fruit in it!

An old woodcutter had placed the food in the tree trunk

while he cut down trees in the forest. He was going to eat
it for his lunch. The fox happily began to eat. After the

fox had finished eating, he felt thirsty and decided to
leave the trunk and drink some water from a nearby
spring. However, no matter how hard he tried, he could
not get out of the hole. Do you know why? Yes, the fox
had eaten so much food that he became too big to fit
through the hole.

The fox was very sad and upset. He told himself, “I wish
that I had thought a little before jumping into the hole.”

THIS IS THE RESULT OF DOING SOMETHING

A Beautiful Gift
A young man was getting ready to
graduate from college. For many
months he had admired a beautiful
sports car in a dealer’s showroom,
and knowing his father could well
afford it, he told him that was all he
wanted. As Graduation Day
approached, the young man awaited
signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the
morning of his graduation his father called him into his
private study.

His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine
son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed
his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but
somewhat disappointed the young man opened the box
and found a lovely, leather-bound Holy Qur’an. Angrily,
he raised his voice at his father and said, “With all your
money you give me a Holy Qur’an ?” and stormed out of
the house, leaving the holy book.

He never
contacted his
father again for
long time. Many
years passed and
the young man

was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home
and wonderful family, but realized his father was very
old, and thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not
seen him since that graduation day.

Before he could make arrangements, he received a

telegram telling him his father had passed away, and
willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to
come home immediately and take care things. When he
arrived at his father’s house, sudden sadness and regret
filled his heart. He began to search his father’s important
papers and saw they still new Holy Qur’an, just as he had
left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Holy Qur’an
and began to turn the pages. As he read those words, a
car key dropped from an envelope taped behind the Holy
Qur’an. It had a tag with the dealer’s name, the same
dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag
was the date of his graduation, and the words PAID IN

The Butterfly and The

Cocoon

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small

opening appeared; he sat and watched the butterfly for
several hours as it struggled to force its body through that
little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It
appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could
go no farther.

Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a

pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the
cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a
swollen body and small, shrived wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he

expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge

and expand to be able to support the body, which would
contract in time.

Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of

its life crawling around with a swollen body and
shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.

What this man in his kindness and haste did not

understand was that the restricting cocoon and the
struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny
opening were nature’s way of forcing fluid from the
body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be
ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the
cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our

life. If nature allowed us to go through our life
without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would
not be as strong as what we could have been. And we
could never fly …….

Questions
1. Why did the man take a pair of scissors and snip
off the remaining bit of cocoon?
2. What happened to the butterfly?
3. Why was the butterfly never able to fly?
4. What are some things in your own life that are

THE SELFISH MAN

Once upon a time, there was a selfish man. He wanted

His friend was a kind man.

As his friend’s daughter was coming from an errand she

father). But the father refused.

The man left the gold coins and went to the court and
informed the judge there about what had taken place
between him and the girl’s father.

The judge sent for the girl and her father, and when they
arrived asked the girl how many gold coins did she find.

She replied thirty gold coins. The judge that asked the
selfish man how many gold coins did he lose and he
answered forty gold coins.

The judge then told the man that the gold coins did not
belong to him because the girl found thirty and not forty
as he claimed to have lost and then told the girl to take
the gold coins and that if anybody is looking for them he
will send for the girl.

The judge told the man that if anybody reports that they
have found forty gold coins he will send for him. It was
then the man confessed that he lied and that he lost thirty
gold coins but the judge did not listen to him.
