ABSTRACT

RESEARCH TITLE: “THE IMPACT OF USING SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE ACADEMIC


PERFORMANCE OF THE SELECTED GRADE 12 STEM STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION:
There is no doubt that Social media has gained wider acceptability and usability and is

also becoming probably the most important communication tools among students especially in

high school. As much as social media is viewed as having bridged the gap in communication that

existed. Within the social media Facebook, Twitter and others are now gaining more and more

patronage. These websites and social forums are way of communicating directly with other

people socially.

Social media has the potentials of influencing decision-making in a very short time

regardless of the distance. On the bases of its influence, benefits and demerits this study is

carried out in order to highlight the potentials of social media in the academic setting by

collaborative learning and improve the students' academic performance.

The social media has become one of the most important communication means in

recent times. However, social networking exist so as to provide communication among

people regardless of the distance, making it open to people easily share information, files

and pictures and videos, create blogs and send messages, and conduct real-time

conversations. These systems are referred to as social, simply because they allow communication

with buddies and co-workers so easily and effectively. It also strengthens the ties between

people of those systems. The favorite in the realm of internet sites are Facebook, Twitter and

others. These websites and social forums are way of communication directly with other

people socially and in media. They are playing a large and influential role decision-making

in the occasions from the global world economically, politically, socially and educationally. This

means that social networking activities have the possibility of enhancing student contact and is

used to improve their participation in class, particularly where introverted students are involved.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study wants to find the impact of using social media in the academic performance of the

students particularly in STEM strand. It seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of :

1.1 Age

1.2 Sex

1.3 Final Grade in the 1st Semester

1.4 Failing Grade in the 1st Semester

2. Is there a significant relationship with the use of social media in the academic

performance of the selected STEM students?

3. Can social media contribute to the academic performance of the students?

4. Is there a need to use social media as part of the academic activities?

5. How the students used social media in their academics?

SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS

Three or 43% of the respondents are female and four or 57% are male. Most of the

respondents had used social media in the subjects Media Information Literacy, Contemporary

Arts meanwhile all of the respondents are not using social media in the subjects like

Understanding Culture, Society and Politics, 21st Century Literature, and P.E. and Health 3.

When it comes to classroom activities 6 out of 7 or 86% of the respondents used social in

their seat works and the data reveals that all of the respondents are using it for their projects and

assignments.

The researchers had asked the respondents of the general average they had accumulated

during their first semester and it shows that none of the respondents got a failing grade.

Part II of the questionnaire is a set of questions for the respondents. This will help the

researchers know the extent of their usage of the social media. All of the respondents said that

social media is big help in their academics.

The researchers had summarized the answer of the respondents as to what aspects of their

academics do social media help them. The students used it to get some ideas, to make their

research easier, to do their assignment, correcting and reviewing ideas, to gain more information

and lastly to remind of their forgotten projects.

The researchers also asked of the instance in which social media has been destruction to

them. The respondents said that during examination they can’t focus because their using their

social media accounts. Aside from this one of the respondents said that she ignore sometimes

some her assignments and on browsing the net. Meanwhile 3 or 43% of the respondents said that

even they are using social media it has never been destruction in doing their academic works.

CONCLUSION

After conducting the results of the answers, the researchers had concluded the following:

 Based on the results social media can contribute to the academic performance of

the students.

 Since they are 21st century learners the used of social media has been rampant to

them and since this is already part of their lifestyle teachers should expect that is

it also part of their academic life.

 Despite of the need of media literacy the results reveal that the respondents

sometimes have a negative attitude with the use of social media and that

forgetting of their assignment and using it more of a leisure rather than academics.

RECOMMENDATIONS

For the future researchers, the researchers recommend that the following:

1. Revision of the research questionnaire. The future researchers may add more kinds of

variables to better support the impact of social media in the academic performace of the

students.

2. The researchers suggest that in looking for related literature, look for reliable resources

(e.g. journal, article, research, etc.)
