Here begins the chapter on pacifying the births during Amävasyä.

Maitreya student of the sage; Darçajätäna birth on amävasyä; Mätäpitro mother and father; Daridra
poverty; Taddoña that affliction/problem; Parihära avoid, remove, remedying; Çanti peace,
pacification; Kuryäd can be done, accomplished; Vicakñaëa sagacious, learned, clever, experienced;
Oh Maitreya those born on Amävasyä invite poverty to their mother and father.
To get relief from this affliction, a learned person should perform remedial
measures.

Udumbara fig, ficus glometra; Vaöa banyan, ficus indica; Açvattha peepal, bo, holy fig tree, ficus
religiosa; Cüta mango; Pallava sprout, twig, bud, blossom; Sa and, with; Nimba neemb,
azadirachta indica; Ca and; Müla root, cause, basis; Tvacas bark, skin; Tatra in that, to that; Vinikñip
put down, insert, fix in;
Take tender leaves, roots and bark from the trees of: 1) fig, 2) banyan, 3)
bo/peepal, 4) Mango and 5) Neem and put into the pitcher.

païcaratna five primary gemstones; Nikñipa laid down, put down, throw in/upon; Vastra cloth,
cover, garment; Yugma even; Ceñta performed, doing;
Put the five gems 1) ruby, 2) pearl, 3) diamond, 4) blue sapphire and 5) emerald
on the pitcher and cover this with cloth.

sarve all, everything, a name of çiva; samudra sea, ocean; iti end, finished; cä and, also; apohiñöha a

Chants of Sarve Samudra1 and three hymns of Äpohiñöha2 (see below) are recited
(to sanctify the kalaça).

Having addressed the kalaça establish it in the south-eastern corner (of the püjä-
place).

The devatas for Amavasya are Chandra and Bhaskara respectively. They should
be made in gold, silver or copper.

äpyäyasva Mantra of the Moon from the Rg Veda; iti after, following, ending; mantra sacred Vedic
syllables or words; savitä paçcät mantra of the Sun/Savitur from the Rg Veda X, 36,14; eva just,
exactly, very, only, same, even; ca and; upacära approach, service, attendance, refers to offering a
certain number of articles to the deity of at least five kinds; samärädha conciliate, propitiate, win
over; tata speading over, extending to, performed (a ceremony); homa also havan, offering
oblation or sacrifice into fire; samäcara to observe, practice, conduct;
With the mantras of Apyäyasva3 and Savitä4 worship the Devatas, and offer
upachara puja followed with homa.

Using samidha (darbha or dry grass) and cooked food the learned person should
offer in the fire.

108 times or 28 times the homa should be done. After this the
abhishekha/sprinkling of the mother, father and child should be done with
water from the kalaça.

(personified as Båhaspati, Indra and Soma), southern direction; brähmaëa a brahmin, one who has
divine knowledge, one who recites the gäyatri mantra; bhojaya feeding, offering food; çaktya
according to ones ability; tata speading over, extending to, performed (a ceremony); kñemam at ease,
prosperous, safe, security; aväp to reach, obtain, gain;
Gold and Silver as well as a Black Cow be given in donation. Offer food to
Brähmaëas according to ones ability, and one will easily attain the results (of the
ceremony).
