The Walthersonian March 2018

President’s Letter
Happy March, Waltherson!

Spring is fast approaching and we’ve already had a couple days of great weather. Hall Springs
in Herring Run Park is open again to foot traffic though the playground is still unusable. I
understand Councilman Dorsey is working to get the playground back in working order while
we wait for the Harford Road bridge project to proceed. The Harford Road bridge is going
through the bidding process now and work is expected to start later this year so there should
still be a couple months that the public can use the park.

As the weather improves we should start to see progress with SoHa at Harford and Southern.
I’m sure everyone is eagerly looking forward to finally seeing the old car lot transformed into
something of use for the neighborhood, not to mention the new restaurant from the former
owners of Maggie’s Farm.

In other local business news, you may have seen that Donut Alliance will be opening a vegan
donut shop at the old Tooloulou spot in Lauraville. The location will be used for wholesale and
will also have a small retail component. Signs are up in the windows of the Function Coworking
/ Performance space at 4709 Harford Road. The space is expected to open in Summer 2018.
You can sign up for updates at their website: www.befunction.al. Lastly, some changes are in
the way for Lauraville house including renovations and bringing in taps for draft beer.

Here in Waltherson the board is discussing ideas for community events to bring the community
together and enhance the neighborhood elements here. If you have ideas on what you’d like to
see or would like to participate in organizing something, please reach out and let us know.

As always, thank you for your continued support and involvement in our neighborhood. I look
forward to seeing you around as we move into spring.

Kind Regards,
Robert J. Walshe, WIA president

NECOP – Northeast Citizens on Patrol
In Northeast Baltimore we have a district wide Citizens on Patrol program called NECOP. The reasoning
behind the COP program is that regular neighborhood patrols can make criminals feel uncomfortable
and drive them out of our neighborhood. Communities with regular NECOP patrols, such as the North
Harford neighborhood, also see significantly less crime than communities with inactive patrols.

Participants meet at the Northeast Police station at 1900 Argonne Drive near Morgan State and an
officer will give you a direct number to keep them in contact with the Police. You would then proceed to
patrol the neighborhood in your car. Patrols normally go out each Thursday and Friday from about 7:30 -
10:30. Anyone interested in the Citizens on Patrol program, please contact us at
mailbox@waltherson.org.

A NECOP training session will be held on March 7th at 3500 Hillen Road.
