My expectations for March are optimistic.

DIVERGENCES LESSON 5
Price movements may showcase a bearish or a bullish trend, depending

on the strength of the bulls (the buyers) or the bears (the sellers). These
trends consist of repeated swings in the price, of which the strength is
mainly dependent on the current momentum. The momentum is the
rate of acceleration of the price or volume, and thus plays a key role in
the current trend. By looking at the large price swings the current trend
creates (the spikes in the bottoms or tops), combined with oscillating
indicators, traders can gain information on the momentum and whether
the current trend is either gaining or losing strength.

There are indicators in Technical Analysis which show whether the price is gaining or losing
momentum. Oscillators like the Relative Strength Index (RSI) or the Momentum indicator show
us the momentum in the price. An increasing momentum or RSI often relates to an increase
in the price. However, this isn’t always the case. This is where Momentum Analysis comes into
play, which helps us to conclude the current trend’s strength using the price’s highs and lows
and the indicators’ highs and lows.
When movements in price differ from the movements in the oscillators, we have a diver-
gence. Divergences help traders spot trend reversals (or continuation, in some cases), which
can help them to either add more to their position or to start closing their position.
How to spot Divergences?
First, a trader should only take into account strong peaks and bottoms when performing
momentum analysis. Hence, consolidation areas should be avoided when trying to spot
divergences. An example of what should be avoided when performing momentum analysis is
when a coin is ‘just’ consolidating and isn’t making any proper highs or lows.

categories, namely ‘Normal
Divergence’ and ‘Hidden
Divergence’. Both categories
have their bullish and bearish
versions. On the right are

Highs or Lows?
You might be unsure about when to consider the highs of the price, and when to consider the
lows of the price. That mainly depends on the current trend; in a bull trend, a trader would
want to know whether the bulls are weakening so that a reversal could be spotted early on.
Hence, the tops are considered when trying to look for bearish divergence, to see whether
bulls fail to make new tops with momentum. This is why in a normal bearish divergence, we
have a higher high for the price, but a lower high for the indicator. This indicates that highs
are being made with less momentum. Bearish divergence doesn’t only show up at the end of

trend, and signals the reversal from a bear trend to a bull trend. Hidden bullish divergence,
however, could occur during a bull trend and would suggest a continuation of the bullish
trend.
How to trade Divergences?
As discussed earlier, divergences help you spot early signs of reversal of the current trend.
Divergences can be found easily on the lower timeframes but show up less frequently on
the higher timeframes. Hence why lower timeframes yield a lot of fake-outs regarding
divergences and does the higher timeframe divergence say significantly more on the current
trend.

discovered Bitcoin around 2011, she soon understood its disruptive potential
and decided to become a Bitcoin supporter. Mir has been Chief Expert

person is to be transparent and

we have outside of anonymity, the
more relatable crypto will be to the
masses. In light of this, I will be
covering the events that ultimately
led to a mindset focused on change
and a proclivity towards
independence. I hope my writing
