Biography: Jorge Luis Rojas is my cousin from my mother’s side of the family and he is

an 18year old male, who was born December 7, 1997 in San Diego California. He is the only son

of Patricia Campa and Emiliano Rojas and has no siblings. As an infant, Jorge’s mother Patricia

decided to return to her origin country Mexico, because living in the United States was too

difficult for her and her new born baby. While living in Mexico, Jorge was told by his mother

that Emiliano, (Jorge’s father) would visit him a few times a month, and after living in Mexico

for two years, his father Emiliano abandoned his son and his mother as he decided to live his life

in the United States, until this day Jorge knows nothing about his father’s life because he never

called or visited again.

Growing up as a child, Jorge lived in a household that provided him with love, care,

physical health and security. He grew up having both his grandmother and grandfather and their

children who contained of six sisters and one brother who are Jorge’s aunties and uncle. As far as

his education, Jorge attended elementary school, middle school, and high school in Guadalajara,

Mexico. Coming from a low income family, at the age of 14, Jorge’s first job was grocery

bagging at the local supermarket. His second job at 16 was providing customer service at Mc.

Donald’s.

Even though his mother had the opportunity to return to the United States to give her son

a better education and job opportunities, Patricia decided to keep Jorge with her until he was the

legal age of 18 years old to make his own decisions. In December of 2014, Jorge decided to visit

the U.S to give himself the chance at life in this prosperous country. Today, Jorge lives in Las

Vegas NV, and currently has a job at the cheesecake factory restaurant. To further his education,

Jorge also takes ESL courses to help him expand his English language as well as knowledge.
Physical Development: According to the website Livestrong.com, the author of the article

“Define Physical Development”, by Kimberly Thomas says that “physical development involves

developing control over the body, particularly muscles and physical coordination.” Based on

Jorge’s physically development, he has significantly developed great gross motor skills but has

fine motor dysfunction.

Jorge has developed his gross motor skills by being very active. Today, Jorge is 5’5 and

weighs 170 pounds and plays for a local soccer team every Sunday in Las Vegas. Since the early

age of 14, Jorge has played baseball and soccer to improve those skills. When Jorge attended

high school he was extremely determined to be on the soccer team of his school. In order join the

team, it took a lot of physical and mental dedication for Jorge to become part of it. He has great

ability in using his large muscles, especially his legs due to conscious and deliberate balance and

stability kicking, running, jumping, hoping, and throwing.

Although Jorge has a full time job and works about forty or more a week, he has

sufficient sleep and appropriate eating habits to maintain his physical health. According to the

website USA.gov, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute state that “sleep plays an

important role in your physical health, and supports growth and development”. Jorge’s job

description includes for him to stand at all times while performing cooking tasks, and the use of

his hands and fingers to cut/prepare food items.

The Therapy Center for Children states that “proficiency in fine-motor control allows the

child to develop skills that will have consequences immediately and in later life”. Even though

Jorge has good manipulating skills when using objects such as a knife, Jorge as well has fine

motor dysfunction. When manipulating writing tools such as a pencil/pen his coordination of

small muscles in the hand and wrist affects his writing, making his letters small and too together.
Emotional Development: According to the text book Educational Psychology Theory and

Practice by Robert E. Slavin, it is stated that “social and emotional development depend on the

experiences provided by schools and families”. (Slavin, 2014, p. 56). Based on Jorge’s

experiences at home and in school, he has had a supportive family who have helped in mostly all

situations involving, personal issues, and school issues. Because Jorge is surrounded by many

family members, there is always someone there to help and guide him with any questions or

concerns he has. Jorge has also had the opportunity to come across educational teachers who

have fortunately took the time/patience in teaching effectively for him to comprehend, to learn

those skills for him to use effectively. His experiences at home and in the school environment

have been positive which have developed his social and emotional development.

The American Psychology Association says that “emotional development during

adolescence involves establishing a realistic and coherent sense of identity in the context of

relating to others and learning to cope with stress and manage emotions.” Through his

adolescence, Jorge has developed a self-concept identity, he is accepted of his characteristics

who have an important role in his emotional development. Jorge’s self-esteem has been

influenced by family, friends, and peers. Like everyone, the skills Jorge has learned and performs

in his daily life have both led to positive and negative experiences and or accomplishments

which also have an important role in his emotional development.

According to the text book Educational Psychology Theory and Practice by Robert E.

Slavin, it states that “most adolescents experience emotional conflicts at some point, due to the

fact they are going through rapid and dramatic changes in body image, expected roles, and peer

relationships”. (Slavin, 2014, p. 63). Jorge is currently experiencing emotional conflicts in his

workplace, due to the fact he is a new employee, and has no relationships with his co-workers.
Philosophical Development: As Jorge just finished high school last year, and even though

he now lives in a different environment than what he grew up in, he has developed a logical

mentality is very aware of society and the different people in the societies he previously lived in

and currently lives in. During high school, Jorge took several classes such as social studies and

other classes in Mexico that made him aware of other religions, cultures, and ethnicities across

the world.
Social Development: According to the text book Educational Psychology Theory and

Practice by Robert E. Slavin, it is mentioned that “adolescents who have satisfying and

harmonious friendships are reported to have higher levels of self-esteem, they are less lonely, and

they develop mature social skills”. (Slavin, 2014, p. 62). Since a very young age Jorge has had

many friends, all whom he met while attending elementary, middle, and high school. Most of

these friendships are now maintained through social media which they continue to give Jorge

moral support which also have helped develop his social skills.

On the website Explorable.com, the article called Social Development Theory says that

“when we talk to our peers or adults, we talk to them for the sake of communication.” In Jorge’s

previous workplaces, he has had to interact not only with other employees but also with

customers. Communicating with people in the work place has allowed Jorge to increase his

social development especially with unknown people he comes across with in his daily life.

According to the text book Educational Psychology Theory and Practice by Robert E.

Slavin, Erik Erikson says that “as people grow, they face a series of psychological crises that

shape personality, and each crisis focuses on a particular aspect of personality and involves the

individual’s relationship with other people.” (Slavin, 2014, p. 63). As previously mentioned in

the biography, Jorge was abandoned by his father at an early age of his life. Although he never

met his father and build no relationship with him, Jorge has developed the ability to express no

remorse for his father’s actions and looks up to other men in the family for advice, and good

concepts about life.

Intellectual Development: According to the text book Educational Psychology Theory

and Practice by Robert E. Slavin, it is stated that “Vygotsky suggested that intellectual

development can be understood only in terms of the historical contexts children experience, and

also that the individuals development depends on the sign system that individuals grow up with.”

(Slavin, 2014, p. 39). For the most part Jorge’s intellectual development has been learned thru

the Spanish language.

Jorge’s primary language is Spanish, as well as in writing. His knowledge in Spanish is

highly accurate. His pronunciation and recognition of letters, vowels, words, places etc. are

perfectly correct. Being raised in Mexico, all of Jorge’s’ learning experiences involved the

Spanish culture, by the forms and ways teachers in that country are instructed to teach students.

Coming to the United States has drastically changed his lifestyle especially the use of his

primary language.

According to the Stanford Children’s Health Association, they say that “during late

adolescence, complex thinking processes are used to focus on less self-centered concepts as well

as personal decision-making. As Jorge now is currently going through late adolescence, he has

clear idea of his role in today’s society. Within the past year, Jorge has made life changing

decisions that have highly increased his intellectual development. One of those life changing

decisions he has made was leaving the country he was raised in to start a new life in the U.S,

leaving all his loved relatives that have physically and emotionally helped him develop as an

individual. Today, Jorge has plans and goals as he is continuing his life in a different

environment.
Recommendations for Teachers/Parents:

1. Physical Development: My recommendations for a teacher to help Jorge expand his

physical development/his fine motor skills, would be to provide Jorge writing

exercises to develop the characteristics of his letters, spacing, and punctuation due to

his dysfunctional skills in writing. By providing Jorge with these materials will allow

his writing to understandable for individuals to read.

2. Emotional Development: My recommendations for a teacher to increase Jorge’s

emotional development, even though his emotional development is very stable, by

providing Jorge with reading materials such as articles, books, magazines with topics

about families and the importance of having good relationships with family, peers,

coworkers, etc. will allow him to expand his emotional development knowledge.

3. Philosophical Development:

4. Social Development: My recommendations for a teacher to help Jorge expand his

social development would be to give Jorge a both English/Spanish speaking partner

during class activities so that the individual can help Jorge understand English words,

meanings, and concepts by translating This will allow Jorge to have a clear

understanding on how to pronounce words and identify text information.

5. Intellectual Development: My recommendations for a teacher to improve Jorge’s

intellectual development would be by providing Jorge with appropriate English

learning activities including audio activities to encourage his English speaking skills,

as well as his writing skills.
