2 - ChE Calculations I and II

2nd Semester A.Y. 2017-2018

1. A storage tank of demineralized water has a holding capacity of 1800 m3 up to an overflow point. The DM water
having silica content of 0.005 mg/L is flowing into a tank at a rate of 25 L/s. The outflow from a tank to the high
pressure boiler is 25 L/s. With time, the quantity of DM water deteriorates and the silica content rose up to 0.02
mg/L. Assuming that the inflow and the outflow remains constant, determine the time in hrs required for the
silica content in the storage tank to increase to 0.01 mg/L.

2. Liquid acetone is fed at a rate of 400 L/min into a heated chamber, where it evaporates into a nitrogen stream.
The gas leaving the heater is diluted by another nitrogen stream flowing at a measured rate of 419 m 3 (STP) /
min. The combined gases are then compressed to a total pressure of P = 6.3 atm gauge at a temperature of
325 degC. The partial pressure of acetone in this stream is 501 mmHg. Atmospheric pressure is 763 mmHg.
Density of acetone is 791 g/L.
a) What is the molar composition of the stream leaving the compressor?
b) What is the volumetric flowrate of the nitrogen entering the evaporator if the temperature and pressure of
the stream are 27oC and 475 mmHg?

3. We have two reactions:

Cl2 (g) + C3H6 (g) → C3H5Cl (g) + HCl
Cl2 (g) + C3H6 (g) → C3H6Cl2 (g
The species recovered after the reaction takes place for some time are listed in table below:
Species MW gmol
Cl2 141.0
C3H6 42.08 651.0
C3H5Cl 76.53 4.6
C3H6Cl2 112.99 24.5
HCl 4.6
Based on the product distribution assuming that no ally chlorides were present in the feed, calculate the
following:
a. How much Cl2 and C3H6 were fed to the reactor in gmol?
b. What was the limiting reactant? excess reactant?
c. What was the fraction conversion of C3H6 to C3H5Cl?
d. What was the selectivity of C3H5Cl relative to C3H6Cl2?
e. What was the yield of C3H5CI expressed in g of C3H5Cl to the g of C3H6 fed to the reactor?
f. What was the extent of reaction of the first and second reactions?
