Calculation involving Titration

Question 2

Sodium carbonate forms several hydrates with a general formula Na2CO3.xH2O.

You are provided with:
A bottle labelled FB 1 that contains Na2CO3.xH2O solid.
FB 3 solution, HCl (aq) , 0.170 mol dm–3 hydrochloric acid

Dilution:
Na2CO3.xH2O (s) + aq  Na2CO3 (aq) + xH2O (l)
A solution of this acid was prepared by dissolving a certain mass of Na2CO3.xH2O solid in
250cm3 distilled water in 250 cm3 volumetric flask. The solution is labelled FB 2.
Data:

Mass of bottle + lid/g 27.00

Mass of bottle + lid + solid Na2CO3.xH2O /g 29.98
Mass of Na2CO3.xH2O solid transferred/g

Titration:
Na2CO3 (aq) + 2HCl (aq) → 2NaCl (aq) + H2O (l) + CO2 (g)
Burette was filled with solution FB 3.
25.0 cm3 of the solution of Na2CO3 (aq) was transferred into a conical flask using a pipette. A
few drops of a suitable indicator was added and titration was continued to first obtain a rough
volume.

Final reading burette /cm3 28.50

Initial volume burette/cm3 0.00
Rough volume FA 3 used/ cm3

This is repeated to obtain concordant titre value.

Final reading burette /cm3 28.30 28.40

Initial volume burette/cm3 0.00 0.10
Rough volume FA 3 used/ cm3
Tick for concordant values

d) Determine the moles of Na2CO3 in 250cm3 FB 2 solution.

e) Determine the relative molecular mass of Na2CO3.xH2O (s) using the answer in part (d)
and the mass of Na2CO3.xH2O (s) dissolved in 250cm3 distilled water. Then determine
the value of x.
