What is ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING

- Man-made lighting for humans to function properly


- Light that can be turned on and off…….
Types of ARTIFICIAL LIGHT

There are two main types of lighting, architectural


and non-architectural
- Architectural lighting is planned when the
building is being designed.
- Non-architectural lighting is lighting that can
be added after the construction is completed.
Types of ARTIFICIAL LIGHT sources

There are three main types of lighting sources


- Incandescent light
- Fluorescent light
- Light-emitting diode (LED) light

Fire, candles, oil lamps, gas coal, kerosene, incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, compact
Fluorescent lamps, high frequency ballast, induction lamps, metal halide, T5 lamps, LED……
Types of ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING

There are three basic types of lighting that work


together for interior design

- Ambient / general lighting


- Task
- Accent

General, localized, ambient, task, decorative, accent, architectural…..


Ambient / General lighting

Ambient / General lighting provides overall illumination


for a room, and is intended to create a uniform light
level throughout a space, independent of any special
lighting that may be needed in targeted areas of a room.
Task lighting

Targeted to a particular area of a room, task lighting is


intended to illuminate a specific function.
Accent lighting

Also called highlighting, accent lighting draws attention


to a focal point. ( concentrated light )
Types of LIGHTING fixtures / LUMINAIRE

a lighting unit consisting of one or more electric lamps


with all of the necessary parts and wiring.
Types of LIGHTING fixtures
1. Ceiling luminaries ; fixtures attached to a ceiling.
- Luminous panels : light large areas
evenly and may cover most of a ceiling
- Recessed and adjustable downlights:
direct lighting downward or angle it
toward an area or object
- Soffit lighting: effectively task lights
- Flush-mounted: mounted flash with or on
the surface to provide light.
- Cornices: are mounted at the intersection
of a ceiling and a wall, washing the wall
in light to provide a reflected light to the
room
- Suspended luminaires: can be hung well
below the ceiling.
- Track lighting: may be built during or after
construction….allow for great variety
2. Wall luminaries: lighting fixtures mounted to a wall.

- Valances: used to increase

- Brackets and sconces: are like valances, but are not
placed over windows. Are used for ambient and task
lighting and may be placed high or low on the wall.
- Coves: provides a hidden trough for lighting that is
directed upwards.
- Luminous wall panels: panels of lighting placed in
the wall surface.
3. Floor and Table Lamps: are portable lighting. They
are often chosen for their

balance, proportion,
scale, colour, texture and
form
