Be a role model for healthy eating habits.
As a parent, or adult role model, you want what is best for your kids, and you especially want them to grow up to be healthy and strong. Adult role models have the greatest influence on the nutritional habits of a child. MyPyramid.gov offers 10 tips for being a healthy role model for the children in your influence. 1. Show healthy habits by your example. Eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains with meals or as snacks. 2. Go food shopping together. Take your child grocery shopping and explain about good nutrition including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, milk, and lean meats. 3. Get creative in the kitchen. Have your child help you prepare meals. Cut foods into fun shapes and encourage your child to invent new menu items. 4. Offer the same food to everyone. Don’t become a short-order cook, and encourage your kids to try all foods offered for meals. 5. Reward with attention, not food. Show your love with hugs and kisses and comfort with hugs and talks. Don’t offer sweet foods as rewards and don’t offer sweets when meals are not eaten. 6. Focus on each other at the table. Make your family mealtime a stress-free time. Turn off the TV, mute the phone, and enjoy the time together. 7. Listen to your child when they are hungry. Be prepared with healthy snacks when your child asks. Offer options so your child feels like they have some control. 8. Limit screen time. Allow no more than two hours of TV, computer, and/or video games a day.

9. Encourage physical activity. Make physical activity a family fun time. Walk, run, and play games together. 10. Be a good food role model. Try new foods yourself. When introducing a new food, serve it with a family favorite. Avoid lecturing and forcing your child to eat. Health
Special nutritional needs for student athletes.
Back to school for many families will mean back to the field, gym, pool, or other sports venue. Proper nutrition is foundational for good health and optimal sports performance, especially during your student athlete’s critical growth years. Unfortunately, many coaches, students, and parents are unaware of the components of a proper training diet. Calories Simply providing the right balance and quantity of calories needed for healthy growth for boys and girls can be a challenge, but add the additional demands of athletic training and kids can be calorie deficient, which can impact healthy growth and athletic performance. Talk to your physician or seek out a registered dietitian to determine what the proper daily calorie intake should be for your athlete. NUTRILITE Sports Nutrition provides many easy before, during, and after nutrition options. Have plenty of NUTRILITE Endurance Cubes, Energy Bars, Whey Protein Bars, Shakes, Powder, Quick Recover Drink Mix, Recovery Cookies, and Restore Drink Mix on hand to put in your athlete’s gym bag to help keep them healthy and performing well all season. The handy NUTRILITE Blender Bottle makes it easy to mix up the Recover and Restore drink mix and Whey Protein Powder.

Balanced diet Eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and beans, and milk, yogurt, and cheese will help to promote healthy growth and provide the nutrients needed for peak athletic performance. Unfortunately, it is tough to maintain a balanced diet with school, practice, homework, and other social demands. Make sure that your student athlete is eating the right foods at every opportunity, but also provide nutritional supplements to fill in the gaps with NUTRILITE® Daily Multivitamin/Multimineral, NUTRILITE Concentrated Fruits and Vegetables, and NUTRILITE OCEAN ESSENTIALS® Balanced Health. The Perfect Pack for your health combines DOUBLE X®, Concentrated Fruits and Vegetables, and OCEAN ESSENTIALS Balanced Health in one convenient, refillable boxed set. Calcium Ages 12–19 are the prime years for bone development, and yet many kids substitute other beverages in place of milk and create an inadequate calcium intake. Calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin K are essential to achieving peak bone mass – maximum bone density, and strength. NUTRILITE Cal Mag D and Vitamin D3 2000 IU plus vitamin K2 should be a staple in your athlete’s diet, especially female athletes.

Fitness
Got 60 minutes?
Exercise used to be a built-in part of a child’s day. Working on the farm, walking to school, and playing outside with neighbor kids were the norm. Today, our kids’ free time is dominated with sedentary activities like watching TV, playing video and computer games, and participating in social media. Parents need to take an active role in making sure kids are getting the required one hour of physical activity per day. Regular exercise benefits the entire family Regular exercise is not just for kids. The entire family will benefit from “playing” together every day. Families who are active can: • Have stronger muscles and bones. • Be less prone to obesity. • Decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes. (30–50% of new type 2 diabetes diagnoses are children 9–19 years old, and the American Academy of Pediatrics states that children as young as 8 years old are starting cholesterollowering medication.) • Possibly lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels. • Have a better outlook on life. • Sleep better. • Better handle emotional and physical challenges. Fitness in action If you’ve ever spent time at a playground during recess, you’ve seen kids demonstrating the three elements of fitness in action – endurance (playing tag), strength (crossing monkey bars), and flexibility (twisting or reaching). Your family should try to incorporate as many of these elements into as many activities as possible. As a family, you can create fitness habits that are important to your child now and as an adult.

Ask the Expert
Q: Why should I make sure that my child is getting enough omega 3s? Research shows DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an important building block of the brain, nerves, and eyes. DHA is the most highly unsaturated fatty acid found in nature. DHA helps support normal mental function, optimal memory, focus, and learning. In fetuses and infants, DHA is critical for brain and vision development. With NUTRILITE® BRAINIUMS DHA® Supplement, you’ll provide the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids that are found in fish, in a delicious Fruit Punch or Lemon gummy your children will love to take. Q: Should my student athlete drink water or a sports drink during exercise? Water is fine to hydrate with for light workouts or short competitions in mild weather conditions, but if your child’s exercise will last an hour or longer, and any time they’re exercising in the heat or humidity, a sports drink that provides carbohydrates, fluids, and sodium, such as NUTRILITE Sports Drinks, are a better option than plain water. The benefits of consuming a sports drink are many. First, a sports drink provides carbohydrates to fuel muscles during exercise. Second, when a hydration beverage has great flavor – Fruit Punch, Grape, and Lemon Lime – the athlete tends to consume more. Third, the sodium and carbs in a sports drink allows the fluid to be absorbed more quickly and helps retain the fluid that has been consumed. Dehydration impairs the body’s ability to perform athletically, and this impairment occurs when as little as 2% of body weight is due to fluid loss. Get your child into the habit of carrying their own sports bottles – two or three perhaps, depending on the length of competitions and practices. This will allow them to have complete control over their hydration needs.

Start every day with a good breakfast to succeed in school.
Your kids want to sleep longer … understood, but getting them to eat breakfast is a great opportunity to invest in your child’s education and success with school-related activities. It can be a difficult thing to get your child up and moving to have time to eat, but research shows that kids who eat breakfast do better in school, are more likely to participate in physical activities, and tend to eat healthier overall. Here are some breakfast suggestions to offer to your child to help them do better in school. • Cold or hot cereal topped with their favorite fruit (strawberries, blueberries, bananas). • Breakfast burrito: scrambled eggs, salsa, cheese, and low-fat cottage cheese on a whole wheat tortilla. • Banana dog: peanut butter, banana, and raisins in a long, wholegrain bun. • Leftovers: If they liked their dinner, serve it up for breakfast. If you want to “show more love,” pack up a healthy lunch and snacks to insure your child’s nutritional needs are met all day long. Remember, when things do get crazy and eating habits start to slip, NUTRILITE® nutritional supplements can fill in the gaps. See this month’s Wellness Wire article “Fill in the nutritional gaps at every age!” for supplement suggestions. And parents, the breakfast thing … that goes for you too!

Next Month:
’Tis the season to start thinking about the holidays! In October we’ll look at some lifestyle strategies to help you stay healthy and maintain a healthy weight during these next few months of celebrations.

Who Is Nutrilite?
Liz Morales: paving a healthier path for the next generation. Liz Morales had a very important reason to make her health a bigger focus: her 4-year-old daughter, Nyomi. As a teen, Liz’s struggles with weight impacted her self-esteem and she was determined that her daughter wouldn’t face the same fate, although she was quickly noticing that her daughter was definitely taking cues from mom, both good and bad. Through the 2010 New Way To A New You program, Liz lost 20 pounds in 12 weeks. The approach emphasizes that weight loss needs to be a total lifestyle change, not just a quick remedy for short-term results. The program featured a sensible eating plan, a 10-minute approach to exercise, and NUTRILITE® supplements, meal bars, and snack bars. Liz says the focus on changing her lifestyle makes her confident that she and Nyomi won’t have to struggle with weight ever again. “I’m setting examples in her life that are going to change her life and make her life so much easier. She’ll have other challenges, but weight management will not be a challenge for her,” she said.
Medical authorities recommend a weight loss of no more than two pounds a week to reduce the risks of health problems associated with more rapid weight loss. The NUTRILITE approach to weight management encourages the types of lasting lifestyle changes that help promote safe, lifelong weight loss. Consult your physician or health-care professional before starting any weight-loss program.
