Design guidelines for
ACCESS NETWORK DEVELOPMENT (AND+) Phase II
__________________________________________________________________________________
Introduction:
This document describes design requirements and guidelines for Access Network
Development (AND+) for implementation of FTTH in a district. These guidelines do not limit
integrators knowledge and experience to propose a better, economical, and efficient
solution for the deployment of FTTH. Integrators may suggest and prepare a very effective
plan that should cover both technical and economic aspects; as an alternate solution.

Design Overview:
FTTH customer connectivity is suggested as follows;

1. OLT will be installed in POP and distance from POP to customer building shall be within the
range of 20km.
2. Two types of Fiber Distribution Terminal (FDT) shall be deployed; single operator
independent cabinet or colocation shared cabinet. Mobily shall inform the integrators at the
beginning of design that which cabinet shall be used in any particular district.
a. Single Operator independent Cabinet:
i. The capacity of this cabinet shall be 21U, in which a) 12U shall be utilized for
installing 4x144 port ODF or any combination of ODF having total 576 ports
available for termination of fibers. B) 3U shall be reserved for installing
Splitter chassis which can accommodate 18 splitters cartage. C) 3U shall be
reserved for installing 1x144 ports ODF or any combination for the
connectivity of backhauling cable from POP. The remaining 3U shall be
reserved for any future demand. This FDT shall be connected from the POP
with full diversity.
b. Co-location Shared Cabinet:
i. The capacity of this cabinet shall be 26U, in which a) 18U shall be utilized for
installing 6x144 ports ODF or any combination of ODF having total 864 ports
available for termination of fibers. B) 3U shall be reserved for installing
Splitter chassis which can accommodate 18 splitters cartage. C) 3U shall be
reserved for installing 1x144 ports ODF or any combination for the
connectivity of backhauling cable from POP. The remaining 2U shall be
reserved for any future demand. This FDT shall be connected from the POP
with full diversity.

3. Customer buildings (CB) will be connected from Fiber Distribution Terminal without
protection and distance from FDT to customer building should be within 500m radius; the
actual length could be more. Exceptions shall be reviewed during design phase and will be
settled case by case. Each building will be connected with one cable.

4. The cable feeding FDT from POP shall be called “FEEDER CABLE”; Cable from Street Cabinet
to Fiber Access Terminal (FAT); a Joint closure in Mini Manhole or two cover hand hole; shall

be called “DISTRIBUTION CABLE” and cable from FAT to customer building shall be called
“DROP CABLE”.
5. Maximum two level of splitting is suggested; One at FDT and second in customer building in
case of Multi-dwelling unit (MDU). The maximum splitting ratio will be 32.

OSP Design Details:

The scope of OSP design will cover the complete site survey of the district, collecting data of
customer in mobily prescribed form, location of FDT, trench route and duct configuration, cable
layout, fiber schematics and FDT configuration. Mobily will identify the existing route and nearest
POP to connect the FDT. Integrators may suggest the route with full diversity to connect FDT and
shall submit their requirement of fiber in FDT. All design work shall have minimum 25% more
capacity than at present requirement.

Installation of Cables from FAT to Customer Building:

 The following cable installation is suggested from FAT to customer building;

 Single Dwelling Unit (SDU):

o 12 Fiber non-metallic cables shall be installed for SDU. Fiber#1-6 shall be

dedicated to Operator#1 and fiber#7-12 shall be dedicated to Operator#2.
o 2 Fiber will be Spliced in the Joint Closure (FAT) with distribution cable; and 2
fibers shall be terminated in Mobily-ODB; remaining will be spare.

 Multi Dwelling Unit (MDU):

o 24 Fiber non-metallic cables shall be installed for MDU. Fiber#1-12 shall be

dedicated to Operator#1 and fiber#13-24 shall be dedicated to Operator#2.
o 4 Fiber will be Spliced in the Joint Closure (FAT) with distribution cable and 4
fibers shall be terminated in Mobily ODB. Second operator shall install his
own ODB to extend the services to customers.

Installation of Distribution cable:

 144 fiber cables preferably shall be installed in span between FDT to FAT as
distribution cable.
 Each cable shall be equally divided among the two operators; incase of 144
fibers cable with 12 tubes; half of tubes (tube#1-6) shall be dedicated to
Operator#1 and another half of tubes (tube#7-12) shall be dedicated to
Operator#2.
 Drop cable (from FAT to CB) shall be spliced in respective dedicated tubes of
Operators.
 25% of the fiber in each cable shall be kept spare.
 It is also recommended to keep full tube dedicated in each handhole/manhole
wherever is possible but not to lose many fiber in general.
 Maximum 12x144 cable shall be designed to cover one FDT boundary.
 All cables from customer end shall be brought in Type-A Manhole close to FDT
and shall be separated as per assigned tubes and left coil in protection tubes.
 Each operator shall be responsible for extending their cable in single operator
independent cabinet. Whereas customers cable shall be extended to the middle
chamber of co-located cabinet and tubes shall be separated and shall kept in
each operator compartment.
 Four middle black ducts are dedicated for customer connectivity. In case of
more than four cables required then use micro-ducts to accommodate more
cables required for customer. Four 14/11.5mm ducts can be installed in one
50/40.8mm ducts. Use micro cable in micro ducts.

05.02.2013: Rev 4 Page 24

ACCESS NETWORK DEVELOPMENT (AND+) Phase II
__________________________________________________________________________________
 Micro cable shall be installed in micro ducts; the OD of 144F micro cable shall be
of 9.2mm dia.

Fiber Schematics:
 Fiber schematic shall be designed as per above guidelines of Distribution cable
and for SDU and MDU connectivity with number of fibers and shall keep 25%
spare fiber along the route.
 Fiber schematic drawing shall show the splicing details and termination in ODFs
for both operators.
 The fiber schematic shall show building connectivity by building number, drop
cable fiber number, distribution cable fiber number and its termination port in
ODF in the FDT.
 Below is the labeling guideline for fiber schematics.
