Section 16500 - Lighting

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION:

A. Provide lighting systems as indicated and specified.

1.04 SUBMITTALS:

A. Shop Drawings: Submit the following in accordance with Section 01300 and as specified
herein.

1. Submit shop drawings and manufacturer's product data with installation


instructions in accordance with the requirements of Section 16050.

2. A copy of this specification section with addenda and all referenced specification
sections with addenda, with each paragraph check-marked to indicate specification
compliance.

a. Failure to include a copy of the marked-up specification sections will result in


return of the entire submittal without further review and consideration until the
marked-up specification are resubmitted with the entire package.

3. Submit manufacturer's shop drawings including photometric data to show that


fixtures are of same type, construction and quality as those indicated. Include
submittal on:

a. Lighting Fixtures

b. Lamps

c. Ballasts

d. Exit Lighting Equipment

e. Emergency Lighting Equipment

4. Provide Operation and Maintenance Manuals in accordance with Section 01300.

5. Submit list of recommended spare parts.

6. Submit list of special tools required for erection, maintenance, and adjustment.

7. Calculations shall be submitted as additional shop drawings to verify that the


lighting fixtures selected provide the following illumination levels. A separate
calculation shall be submitted for each type of fixture or each area. The method of
calculation shall be the Zonal Cavity method. The fixtures selected shall provide
the specified level of illumination. The spacing to mounting height ratio shall not
be exceeded. Data to be used in the calculations shall be as given below:

1.05 SEISMIC REQUIREMENTS:

A. Conform to the requirements as indicated on drawing S-1 and as specified in Section


01900.

1.06 QUALITY ASSURANCE:

A. Provide in accordance with Section 01400 and as specified herein.

1.07 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING:

A. Provide delivery, storage, and handling of all equipment, materials, and spare parts in
accordance with Section 01610.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL:

A. Lighting equipment manufacturers, description, and special design, material, lamp and
electrical characteristics, are shown on the drawings. All lighting fixtures shall be in
accordance with the National Electrical Code and shall be constructed in accordance with
the latest edition of the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) “Standards for Safety, Electric
Lighting Fixtures”. All lighting fixtures shall be UL labeled.

B. Light fixtures, fittings and accessories shall be approved for installation within areas to
comply with the requirements of National Electric Code including Hazardous Locations,
Class, Division and Group..

C. All fluorescent light fixtures shall be furnished with radio frequency interference (RFI)
suppressors.

2.02 LAMPS:

A. Furnish lamps of types and wattages shown in fixture schedule.

B. Color: Unless otherwise indicated, fluorescent lamps shall be 35K color, and with a rated
life of 20,000 hours. Lamps shall comply with the following table of operating
characteristics:

2.03 BALLASTS:

A. Fluorescent Fixtures:

1. Fluorescent – Electronic: Ballasts for fluorescent lamps shall be high frequency


(20 kHz or greater) electronic type filled with non-leaking, thermosetting
compound, rated for 220 volt service, unless otherwise indicated. Two and three

lamp ballasts shall be used where applicable with input watts limited to 62 watts
and 92 watts maximum respectively. Ballasts for fixtures located in covered
unheated areas and open areas shall be low temperature type. Ballasts shall be
Class P, protected type, sound rated A, high power factor and shall carry the CBM
and UL label. Provide ballasts for case temperature lower than the nominal UL 90
degrees C requirement. Ballasts shall comply with FCC Rules and Regulations
concerning electromagnetic and radio frequency interference. Total harmonic
distortion shall not exceed 27 percent and 33 percent for compact fluorescents.
Current crest factors for ballasts shall not exceed 1.7, measured with regard to the
modulated wave form for high frequency ballasts. Rapid start ballasts shall heat
cathode prior to lamp ignition. Blassasts shall be able to withstand line transients
in accordance with IEEE Publication 587 category A.

2. Ballast sound rating shall be "A".

3. Provide ballasts class "P" manufactured for applicable indoor or outdoor use,
conforming to UL standard 935 & ANSI C82.1.

4. Provide ballasts with Certified Ballast Manufacturer (CBM) label.

5. Standard ballasts shall start lamps at a bulb wall temperature of 12 degrees C or


less. Energy efficient ballasts shall start lamps at temperatures above 12 deg. C.

B. High Pressure Sodium Fixtures:

1. Provide ballasts with a power factor of 90 percent for 70 watt lamps and above.

2. Provide high power factor electronic ballasts.

3. In non-air conditioned spaces, provide ballasts rated for operation in 50-deg. C


temperature environment.

4. Provide high pressure sodium ballasts for 220-volt or 380-volt operation.

5. The ballast, including the starter aid, shall protect itself against lamp failure modes
and shall be capable of operation with the lamp in an open or short circuit condition
for six months without accelerated loss of ballast life.

6. The lamp wattage regulation spread (as defined in ANSI 82.4 and ANSI 82.6) at
any lamp voltage, from nominal through end of rated life, shall not exceed 18%
line voltage variation.

7. The ballast primary current during starting shall not exceed normal operating
current.

8. Provide ballast capable of sustaining lamp operation with a line voltage dip or sag
of 50% for up to 4 seconds when operating a nominal voltage lamp, with nominal
line voltage applied to the ballast primary, as defined in ANSI 82.6.

9. The line power factor of the lamp/ballast system shall not drop below 90% for +
10% line voltage variations at any lamp voltage, from nominal through rated end-
of-life lamp voltage, as described in ANSI 82.6.

2.04 FIXTURES:

A. Provide fixtures with lamps of wattage to provide the required illumination level in each
area as specified.

B. Provide open tube flourescent fixtures with spring loaded telescoping sockets, self
locking sockets or two (2) lamp retainers (per lamp).

C. Provide lighting fixtures listed and labelled by U.L.

D. In addition to the requirements stated elsewhere in this section, provide: fluorescent,


HID, incandescent fixtures for hazardous locations which conform to UL 844 or which
have Factory Mutual certification for the class and division indicated.

2.05 EXIT SIGNS:

A. Provide with automatic power failure device, test switch, pilot light, and fully automatic
high/low trickle charger in a self contained power pack. Battery shall be sealed
electrolyte type, must operate unattended, and require no maintenance, including
additional water, for a period of 5 years.

2.06 EMERGENCY LIGHTING EQUIPMENT:

A. Provide fixtures and heads as indicated. Provide units with brown out sensitive circuit to
activate battery when ac input falls to 75 percent of normal voltage and 15 minute time
delay feature for areas with HID lighting.

2.07 SPARE PARTS:

A. Provide two ballasts and five lamps of each type provided.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01 INSTALLATION OF LIGHTING FIXTURES AND LAMPS:

A. Provide all material, equipment and labor to install all conduit, wire, mountings, fixture
types and lamp sizes as indicated and as specified.

B. Install fixtures in compliance with applicable codes.

C. Suspend pendant fixtures by means of outlet box with cover-type aligners, each having
flexible joint permitting unit to hang plumb.

D. Use aligners of shock absorbing type, as indicated.

E. Use vapor tight aligners with vapor tight fixtures.

F. Install each explosion-proof pendant fixture having stem longer than 300 mm., with
explosion-proof swivel or flexible fitting permitting fixture to hang plumb. Fixtures with
stems shorter than 300 mm can be aligned by leveling the outlet box mounting,
explosion-proof swivels.

G. Install recessed fluorescent fixtures in suspended ceiling openings in conformance with


manufacturer's recommendations. Do not carry weight of fixture by ceiling suspension
system; provide independent support. Install fixtures with adjustable fittings to permit
alignment with ceiling panels. Install fixtures in fire-resistive type of suspended ceiling
construction, equipped with fireproof back boxes constructed of materials of same fire
rating as ceiling panels. Conform to UL approved building materials list.

H. Install accessories such as straps, mounting plates, nipples, or brackets for installation.
Mounting heights specified or indicated must be to bottom of fixture for ceiling mounted
fixtures and to center of fixture for wall mounted fixtures. Obtain the exact mounting for
lighting fixtures from the Authority before installation is commenced. Coordinate
mounting with the type, style, and pattern of the ceiling being installed.Where unistrut or
channel type mounting supports for lighting fixtures are provided, the unistrut supports
shall not be used as a raceway for the fixture wiring. Separate conduit and boxes shall be
provided to form an independent interconnecting wiring system for the fixtures. All
support systems must be grounded in accordance with Massachusetts Electrical Code
requirements. All support systems shall be Type 316 stainless steel with stainless steel
hardware.

I. Connect emergency light fixtures within an area to the same circuit supplying power to
the normal light fixtures within that area. Connect emergency light fixtures to the circuit
before the light switch for normal lighting.

3.02 TESTING:

A. Provide physical checkout, field, and functional testing in accordance with Section 16050
and 16998.
