Aim: I wish to make a short psychological thriller about a heroin

addict getting consumed by his addiction.

Target Audience: I want to target young people with my film. This is because
I can easily make it relatable to them, being a young
person myself. I will need to undertake detailed research to
find out what group of young people I’m specifically
targeting.

Project Title: Chasing the Dragon

Aim of Project: With this project, I want to develop on my directing, writing

and editing abilities. I want to write a great story with a
clear start, middle and end. That challenges the viewer’s
perception. I also want to develop my ability as a director
and aim to get good performances out of my actors. I will
also have to direct the camera person as I plan to act in the
film. I want to improve on my audio and effects in post. I will
add some effects in to my film that help tell the story. I also
want to develop my colour correction. I would like to
develop an intro sequence for my film. I wanted to do this
for my Sci-Fi film, but couldn’t due to time constraints. This
will help with my editing techniques.
Unit 022 (Single Camera Techniques) is going to help me
the most in my film. I will take the skills and experience I
gained from Unit 022 (Single Camera Techniques) and use
it to plan and shoot my project. I will use what I have learnt
from Unit 024 (Writing for Television and Video) to write my
project. I will use my abilities to tell a story with clarity and
detail. I will also need to research some themes in my film
to get a deeper understanding of the subject and present it
in an accurate way. For this, I need the research skills I
have gained from 20900C (Research Techniques for the
Creative Media Industries) and H/600/6631 (Factual
Programme Production Techniques for Television) to look
more into my themes and subjects.

Initial Ideas, Research and For my project, I have chosen to do a short film. This is
Resources: because this is the area of filmmaking I would like to get in
to. Making this film will help me develop my skills at film
making. It will also serve as evidence for my filmmaking
talents, to show employers in the future. Making a short film
is the best choice for me, looking at my previous film. I
want to improve upon what I have learnt from my previous
project. I want to tell a greater narrative that includes more
connotations and hidden messages. This is why I want to
make a film based around drug addiction.

I want to make a psychological thriller similar to films like

‘Fight Club’ (1999), ‘Seven’ (1995) and ‘The Silence of the
Lambs’ (1991). A psychological thriller is a subgenre of
thriller. It features characters that are often unstable and
disillusioned. It focuses on character’s mental perceptions
and mind set. I want to make a film that presents the
psychological state a character is in. I want to make a film
where you can see into a character’s mind. You can feel
what they feel and see what they see. I want to use the
psychological thriller genre to enter the mind of a heroin
addict. Psychological thrillers normally include plot twists. A
plot twist is when the story takes an unexpected turn.
Themes of psychological thriller include reality, perception,
mind, existence/purpose, identity and death. There are
many famous directors in the psychological thriller genre. I
plan to analyse their work for ideas and inspiration. David
Fincher directed films like ‘Fight Club’ (1999), ‘Seven’
(1995) and ‘The Game’ (1997). He is known for dark
thrillers that focus on men’s psychology. This is going to be
my main inspiration. Darren Aronofsky directed ‘Black
Swan’ (2010), ‘Mother’ (2017) and ‘Requiem for a Dream’
(2000). He is known for his themes of madness and pursuit
of perfection. The theme of madness might have a part to
play in my film, so he’s a good director to look at. Fincher
and Aronofsky will me my main inspiration for my
psychological thriller.

Media, Media Forms, In order to make my film, I must go through the three
Technologies and Time-scale: stages of production. First is pre-production. I need
to do research for the film. I need to research the
audience as well as some themes in the film, to get
a better understanding. Next I need to write the
script for the film. After that, I need to make a
schedule, storyboard, location recon and shot list to
plan ready for the production stage.
For production I will need to record my film. Using the plans
from pre-production, I can effectively shoot the film.
Post-production is where I will assemble everything I have
recorded. This is where the film comes together.
Using Premiere Pro, I will piece all of the recordings
together and add in sound effects and music to
complete the film.

Evaluation and Review: I will have meetings with my tutor to see if everything is on
track. And ask if there’s anything that needs to be improved
upon. If there is anything that needs to be improved upon, I
will come up with solutions to solve my problems.
