Non-Fiction Response

1.) The main idea of the speech is to help men and women because they are given the choice
to leave work because either they just had a newborn child or just want to spend time
with your newborn and not lose the chance of having the chance to have a bond with their
child and they are not given any money while they are entitled to 12 weeks off but only
take two because they can’t afford to stop working for that long.
2.) This actually makes a similar connection with my aunt that just had a baby and left work
because she could barely walk straight and stand up because she was so weak because
she just had her child.
3.) I believe that the authors person or the person who gave the speech is trying to help men
and women,
A) What lead me to this was the way the Anne Hathaway describes her personal life of her
just having a baby last year of 2016 and how she know how it feels to leave her
job/career to attend her newborn and she said it was difficult and she said this “ In late
March, last year, 2016, I became a parent for the first time. I remember the
indescribable—and as I understand it universal—experience of holding my week-old son
and feeling my priorities change on a cellular level.”
4.) The audience is the United Nation members and following politicians who like this type
of information.
a.) How I know is that she is giving her speech directly to them.
b.) I believe that the choice of audience affects the text by maybe using bigger words that
a child might not understand and how the reader can talk in a more educated way and not like if
he or she is reading from a children book.
5.) What details that the reader does to argue its position in their speech is that “Somehow,
we and every American parent were expected to be “back to normal” in under three months.
Without income. I remember thinking to myself, “If the practical result of pregnancy is another
mouth to feed in your home and America is a country where most people are living paycheck to
paycheck, how does 12 weeks unpaid leave economically work?”
6.) The most prevalent in writing is Logos because she uses logical questions and answers in
her speech.
a.)”American women are currently entitled to 12 weeks’ unpaid leave. American men are
entitled to nothing. That information landed differently for me when, one week after my son’s
birth I could barely walk, when I was getting to know a human who was completely dependent
on my husband and I for everything, when I was dependent on my husband for most things,
when we were relearning everything we thought we knew about our family and relationship. It
landed differently.”
”In fact, a study in Sweden showed that every month fathers took paternity leave, the
mothers’ income increased by 6.7 per cent. That’s 6.7 per cent more economic freedom for the
whole family. Data from the International Men and Gender Equality Survey shows that most
fathers report that they would work less if it meant that they could spend more time with their
children.” ”The truth is, for too many people it doesn’t. One in four American women go back to
work two weeks after giving birth because they can’t afford to take any more time off than that.
25 per cent.”
b.) The reader/Anne Hathaway uses her information from her own experience with leaving
her career for a while because she had just given birth to her newborn, also she has credible
information form the International Men and Gender survey
7.) A possible theme can be how the United Nation of women and trying to persuade the
reader/ listener to have equality with women and men.
1.)”American women are currently entitled to 12 weeks’ unpaid leave. American men are

3.)”Paid parental leave is not about taking days off work; it is about creating freedom to define
roles, to choose how to invest time, and to establish new, positive cycles of behavior. Companies
that have offered paid parental leave for employees have reported improved employee retention,
reduced absenteeism and training costs, and boosted productivity and morale. Far from not being
able to afford to have paid parental leave, it seems we can't afford not to.”
8.) How this topic helped me understand that us mean and women should be equal with the rights
to having to leave to go to your newborn child and also get paid so won’t have to worry about the
stress of maybe being low on money and can’t pay for rent, etc.
9.) I would actually not change anything because Anne Hathaway was straightforward about the
topic and even has her own experience with her being pregnant and having to not go to work,
well her career as an actress.
a.) I believe that if I would change something with the text it wouldn’t help a lot since it was a
speech but if I changed the way that people get paid and what the amount would be it could catch
the attention of pregnant ladies and their husband.
10.) Anne Hathaway gave her speech to give her very own opinion about not being paid
because meanwhile you take a break off of work because you just had a child and your to weak
to work and they should get paid for a break because of a newborn. I actually agree with Anne
because I believe it’s unfair to the women and husband who just had a child. They are maybe too
weak to work or just want to spend time with their newborn. But some actually after giving birth
they take a two week break and go straight back to work. Anne explains “The truth is, for too
many people it doesn’t. One in four American women go back to work two weeks after giving
birth because they can’t afford to take any more time off than that. 25 percent. Equally
disturbing, women who can afford to take the full 12 weeks often don’t because it will mean
incurring a “motherhood penalty”— meaning they will be perceived as less dedicated to their job
and will be passed over for promotions and other career advancement.” What this information
means is that can’t afford to take the whole 12 weeks off without getting paid so they decide to
take a break for only two weeks and go back to work because if not the bills can’t be paid or
provide food for the family. How these both connect is that by stating that Anne believes that
people should be paid instead of not getting paid because it causes stress towards the family and
my evidence states that the reason women or men don’t take the full time break is that they’ll
lose a lot in money for food, rent, clothes, etc.
